Alex confirms Rush is "basically done"

To be honest, part of me feels kind of glad that they bowed out when they were somewhat healthy....I would have loved to see Rush live a second time, but I think that them retiring is a less painful than say, a few years down the road, one of them gets hooked on painkillers and then dies of an overdose....

More often than not R40 was a pretty painful watch on most nights (via periscope anyway. Saw three shows in person and the consistency wasn't what it had been.) But that's just my opinion.

Live, the show was great fun. The CD? It’s not a very good listen. It’s understandable. If you think Geddy sounds as good now as he did in 1981, you’re denigrating how great he was then.

Discounting a lot of the R40 shows I prefer Geddy's voice in the years after Moving Pictures. I don't get how that would be "denigrating" his voice.

I think he'd even tell you he became a better singer in the following years, but that doesn't make what he did before that bad...just different.

I actually think the peak of his voice was Signals through PowerWindows.

I agree, but would extend that through HYF. Say what you will about the songs -- HYF is a very polarizing album among Rush fans -- but Geddy wrote some really nice vocal melodies on that album, and he sang them well.

HYF lacks all 'pole' so it's not polarizing...it just sucks balls.

Yup. A lot of Rush albums are exceptional. Most of the rest are very good and strong material. They have only put out 2 albums I'd consider bad IMO. Hold Your Fire would be one of them for me. There's so much that went wrong on it. Way way way too synthy, Alex Lifeson missing in Action, lousy production and sound, and lyrics that are cringe worthy at times. I enjoy Force Ten and Mission a lot. A couple other songs are ok, and the rest is not up to snuff. Vapor Trails is the other bad album for me...

I think his voice on Presto and Roll the Bones is stellar.

Geddy's voice is amazing on every record up to "Counterparts."

JMO

I think his voice is still quite good up to Test for Echo...it’s just that I don’t like that album all that much. (It's third from the bottom for me).

With all due respect, this is something of a straw man. I’m not talking about whether Geddy sounded better on Signals than he did on PeW. I’m talking about Geddy circa 2015 vs. Geddy in his prime.

Not really following this. My original (first) comment (above) was specific to R40 and I never mentioned Moving Pictures or 1981 so don't understand how I'd be "denigrating" 1981 by not even mentioning it in my initial comment.

Subsequent to that, I also don't think everyone has the same definition of "better" and "prime."
