Ok

Replayed Bad

Not as strong as I remembered it. 8/10

Dangerous is also an 8/10

Funny I really did find both inconsistent.

I'd give Off The Wall and Thriller a 6/10 and nothing after Dangerous works as complete albums for me.

Maybe I am ready for Prince now!

The video for Thriller scared me when I was a kid. Now I realize how silly the whole thing is. Zombies dancing in unison lol. Vincent Price's part is still pretty cool though.

Thriller was the first vid by Jackson i saw. i was like this guy is highly respected? lol

i later learned better though.

be like Mick......Mick knows best.

It's been a while. I found all the songs I loved I still love and no real filler on these two. But I agree they are shakier. I could have done with Dangerous being three songs shorter, but not sure what I'd cut.

I must say though Taylor Swift is my all time favourite pop star album wise. Singles? Michael Jackson, Rihanna, Madonna and I have a soft spot for Janet Jackson, Britney and Justin Timberlake. Beyonce has three albums I LOVE: Dangerously In Love, the self titled and Lemonade. But Taylor Swift means as much to me as Bruce Springsteen, Fleetwood Mac and ABBA.

My scores for Machine Head's Catharsis:

1. "Volatile" 4/10

An average, angry album opener. Probably the bands least exciting start to an album. Lots of anger, lots of swearing, lots of loudness, but not much excitement.

2. "Catharsis" 10/10

I bloody love this song! I had extremely high hopes when I first heard this. It means a lot to me, the single soundtracked a very important time in my life, which occurred very recently. Breaking free from religion and making the love of my life public proved to be a brave and difficult chapter. I lost everyone I thought who mattered, and this song really helped me cope. And now I realise I didn't lose anything really. That's my catharsis.

3. "Beyond The Pale" 6/10

Decent song. I like it, it was the first song I heard off this album and I thought it was just ok. I still think that it is just ok.

4. "California Bleeding" 2/10

This is coming from the same band who wrote Halo? Shit.

5. "Triple Beam" 8/10

I cannot tell if I love this because its great or just because its a highlight on a bad album, but I really love this song and I am certain I will still love it once this album gets largely forgotten.

6. "Kaleidoscope" 6/10

"This hole in my soul

Songs fill what religion won’t

No hope, I can’t cope

Music plays in kaleidoscope

And if I’m lost

I don’t want to be found

Haunted by sound"

I love these lyrics, and the song gets better as it goes along, but it sounds unfinished to me.

7. "Bastards" 8/10

I hated this at first. The lyrics received a backlash, as did the bands Celtic punk flavour they went for. They nailed it, and I love the lyrics and the emotion behind them. Time will likely be kind to this song.

8. "Hope Begets Hope" 8/10

I like this song a lot. Really quite stunning, hard to review it because I only just really noticed it the last play through.

9. "Screaming At The Sun" 4/10

It is a good song. But...Machine Head YOU ARE BETTER THAN THIS! Nu metallish, and honestly just an all round decent filler. It's one of the albums more forgettable moments, which is sort of a complement. I enjoy the vocals quite a bit though on this one. But this sounds very 2003 mallcore. Not what I want from these guys, especially when it sounds like a generic mallcore filler song ready for Hot Topic playlists.

10. "Behind A Mask" 10/10

This is honestly quite beautiful, again the vocals stand out. I love the vocals on this album for the most part actually...atmospheric, earnest and really quite mesmerising. The acoustic parts are really wonderful, I wish the entire album felt as fresh as this. Beautiful.

11. "Heavy Lies The Crown" 6/10

I can't quite decide what to write about this one. It's an attempt at an epic, and by itself it really is very good and quite stunning actually...really stunning...but the issue I have is that when it comes to comparing it to the likes of anything off The Blackening or Unto The Locust, it honestly just does not stand up. It sounds like a band trying out an epic for the first time, when in actuality Machine Head are masters of this sort of thing by now. It tries hard to please and I do enjoy it. It reminds me of the cheesy quality of Dream Theater's The Count Of Tuscany, a song I love in spite of knowing it's not well revered amongst fans. Apparently this song is about some 16th/17th Century French monarch. I like that bombast. This song could grow on me but it's a real odd thing to accept from Machine Head. I definitely am not convinced its a career highlight, just better than some of the other songs. Terrific songwriting though, it's just the theme and the lyrics are taking me a while to digest. I love the riffs here. It will likely grow on me. Prog at heart, probably better for it.

12. "Psychotic" 1/10

Sounds just like Slipkot at their most shit[knot]. Very catchy, but then so is AIDs. Imagine 1999, it's mainstream metal at its worst (but this would likely have been a hit back then). Machine Head, no.

13. "Grind You Down" 1/10

More shit. It's got speed and it's got good playing. It's also plain shit. Fcuk sake Machine Head! This sounds like a terrible metalcore band with those sideswept black fringes, too tight leather jeans and spots on their chin. If you are currently a 15 year old Bullet For My Valentine fan living in 2005, you will probably play this and think this is the most br00tal metal song ever. It's actually shit.

14. "Razorblade Smile" 0/10

Bollocks. I kid you not this album got shitter. Again some catchy riffs and very decent drumming. But it all adds up to absolutely nothing. The lyrics are awful. It has the makings of a decent song but again, clearly talented musicians aren't always enough to save a song. And this is funny shit. If you have dysentry, make this song a part of your soundtrack. It sounds more sick than you. And no that's not "sick" in the trendy way dumb kids use that word. Is it the worst song they have ever released? It would seem so.

15. "Eulogy" 8/10

Decent closer. Pretty, and another epic. It's inexplicable how they chose to close off this album so wonderfully having preceded it with three godawful songs. It's tender and beautiful and is also basically a redoing of Bastards. Haunting and really lovely. Odd description for a Machine Head song.

Well all i can say about Machine Head is my brother and i loved them. he's really not a music guy. but we had this band in common.

We loved the first 2 records. the Burning Red came out. we were like......ummmmmmm.......ok?

Supercharger hit. we were Disgusted. and sad to say......that closed the book. We had never seen a band crash and burn so fast. we never bought another release. Sometimes an album is so bad it will do that, lol

Fast forward and i can't believe all the great music i missed.

Try havung your first Machine Head album being The Blackening only to get Supercharger next and wonder why their exist two bands with the same name...I went online and researched them and was gobsmacked...I got Burn My Eyes, The More Things Change and Through The Ashes Of Empires. Loved them. Bought The Burning Red...didn't.

Unto The Locust sort of passed me by as I wasn't into them at that point and I swear I never knew Bloodstones And Diamonds existed until a customer told me he couldn't stop playing it three years in a row, constantly.

He got me back into Machine Head and their best work I love more than nearly any other metal band. More than Mastodon, less than Paradise Lost.

I must say Catharsis has left me very non-plussed. It's like watching your best friend change for somebody else and they then leave you.

I feel very strangely about this new album. It's disappointing but also it sounds very sincere.

I just started the new record and i really enjoyed Volatile but it's only one track, lol

Mick

Volatile is very popular but it did nothing for me. But I am liking the album more and more, I don't even skip the stinkers as they make the last song even better lmao
