Alex confirms Rush is "basically done"

I guess Alex just got around to reading Neil's book from 2016. That was definitive and pretty much confirmed that Rush was basically done. Since then, I suppose Alex and Geddy (and many fans) were holding on to some hope - ignoring what "Far and Wide" very clearly spelled out. Edited by cygnify

Alex and Geddy: "'The guys at work?' Wow, Neil doesn't like us very much, does he?"

To be honest, part of me feels kind of glad that they bowed out when they were somewhat healthy....I would have loved to see Rush live a second time, but I think that them retiring is a less painful than say, a few years down the road, one of them gets hooked on painkillers and then dies of an overdose....

More often than not R40 was a pretty painful watch on most nights (via periscope anyway. Saw three shows in person and the consistency wasn't what it had been.) But that's just my opinion.

Live, the show was great fun. The CD? It’s not a very good listen. It’s understandable. If you think Geddy sounds as good now as he did in 1981, you’re denigrating how great he was then.

Yeah. Tell me again how Geddy sounded as good on the R40 tour as he "ever" did.

Absolute prime of their career right here.

And the setlist isn't too shabby either.

Geddy is at his peak singing voice here, but he should be when he's in his 20's. He held his own the last few tours, but I was cringing at time. Truth is to still be able to sing like he did in the last few tours at his age is truly amazing. Not fair to compare Geddy at 62 to Geddy at 29 or whatever.

Agreed. Geddy at in his 20s was f***ing amazing. It's not right to denigrate how good he was by suggesting that he's anywhere near that level these days.

I wish people would just leave Neil alone. He's 65... he's retired. Stop being so selfish and ridiculous. No wonder he stays away from fans. I would too.

Who/What are you referring to?

4 pages of this thread so far and I’ve only seen 2 TRFers who’ve stated that they wish Peart continued. And HOW they said it weren’t even in overly “selfish or ridiculous” ways. Nearly everyone in this thread has accepted Rush’s retirement. Some of those same people are just joking around...because we already accepted Rush’s retirement a while ago and there’s not much else to do but muck about.

Exactly....it's a silly argument in the first place. As of now, with no future plans, Rush is "retired". All I'm saying is given that 64/65 is still somewhat "young" now, and given human nature, it's anyone's guess whether "retirement" will be a permanent state. Personally, I still don't think it is. But if I'm wrong, I don't begrudge Rush anything.

he could have saved the "basically" ....I dont like adverbs in general btw....waiting for Geddy's Big and Beautifull Book of Bass...that will make my year music wise.... :geddy:

Exactly. People's singing voices, particularly a higher register, deteriorate with age. People saying that at 62 Geddy was as good as he was at 29 is akin to suggesting a 62 year old football player can perform at the same level he could at 29. It's OK to say hes not as good as he once was, but you still enjoy him. I don't understand why people feel the need to go further and suggest that he's not a human being who lost a step with age.

It's sad that Neil retired when he was in his prime the last tour. He was getting out of those concert venues after the show twenty to thirty seconds faster than he did on any other tour.

YES! Those awkward, uncomfortable sprints to the bus were only getting faster and faster...a sure sign of peaking athletic ability.

Ive related this before, but one year, years ago, in Camden NJ Neil left so fast that his cymbals were still swaying and he was waving at backstage as he ran off. lol. It was hilarious.

I for one am glad they are officially done. They were great, just fantastic and creative in a meaningful sense all the way up to the end. Carrying on further would not have been them, nor up to their standards. The longevity of their career of putting out (even if not always my cup of tea) artistically laudable music and working very hard in long concerts for their fans was second to none. They were never a nostalgia act nor will they ever be. It was time to say goodbye and call it an awesome run and let Rush be Rush and nothing else.

That song has my favorite line from any Rock song, ever "We were the first band to vomit in the bar and find the distance to the stage too far:.".

If I had missed R40 maybe I’d be bitter.

I would have to agree with you on that. I've never seen Rush live before so I pretty much have been feeling bitter about it since then.

So you’re bitter about not seeing a band you think wasnt good live?

Is that correct? If so, how does that make sense?

And before you think you’re getting attacked or something similar, I’m simply trying to make sense of that.
