Kids react to Rush - kids review Tom Sawyer

I first heard Tom Sawyer when I was 11 (when it came out).

I immediately loved it, though it would be a few years before I realized that the same band that played Tom also made Closer, Spirit, Freewill, Subdivisions, Body Electric, etc.

Despite immediately loving it, a neighbor kid who was 15 threatened to beat up any of us if we didn't like it. I'm sure he was kidding, but that was how big Tom Sawyer was.

Is that how I was at that age? With Rush I wasn’t anyway. I was already hardcore by the time I was 9. I knew all the lyrics, all the trivia, etc. I can’t exactly remember what I actually said about them to classmates though.

A year later as a 5th grader, I was considered cool because I was going to the Signals concert. That might’ve been the last time anyone thought I was cool. :P

I fell in love with "Tom Sawyer" when it first hit the streets. I was in the 8th grade. I was already two years into drum lessons. I remember my drum instructor Ray Libby wanted to teach me Fleetwood Mac's "Dreams" and it was simple.

The following week I brought in my "Moving Pictures" cassette and asked him to teach me "YYZ." He did. I've been obsessed with drumming to RUSH music ever since.

Sorry if I scared you back then. You’re right, I wasn’t really going to beat you guys up.

What did you guys think of Rush when you were that age (9-12)?

Were you even aware of the band?

What do/did your kids think of Rush at that age?

I was 12 when I got into them. Their latest album was Permanent Waves.

My son and I saw the R40 show when he was 12. He loved it.

"That's a guy" lol. Some of those kids look and act older than 9. Boy, they grow up quick.

Everyone has their "that's a guy?!" moment. Even on the relatively low TS vocal, Ged just does not sound like a dude to the uninitiated ear,

That happened to me with a co-worker who heard Anthem. He thought it was a girl and refused to believe otherwise until I showed him a photo of the band.

That didn't even help my first wife... she saw Geddy in his kimono and said "That's a kinda homely chick," or something pretty close.
