To be honest, part of me feels kind of glad that they bowed out when they were somewhat healthy....I would have loved to see Rush live a second time, but I think that them retiring is a less painful than say, a few years down the road, one of them gets hooked on painkillers and then dies of an overdose....

It's regrettable that we won't see anything from this great band, but I look on the bright side:

- I got to see them sixteen times since 1988, with none of their live shows being less than average, and most ranging for great to classic.

- We had over forty hears of great studio albums and live tours, with very few songs that were stinkers--probably less than 5. How many bands with the longevity of Rush can say that?

- This is a band that could have easily packed it in during the late 90's or early 2000's due to the death of Neils wife and daughter. Yet they managed to get back together in 2001 and release some of their best material. This was a band that did not rely on past glories and continued to release great albums--and have the guts to back them up on tour. Most bands that have been around as much as Rush would not have played 9-10 songs from their latest album, even with the extended running time their concerts have been. Instead, they would have relied upon the "hits".

- Their tours were always challenging, not only for the band but the audience, as they managed to put together amazing setlists. Unlike most bands that have been around even half as long, Rush has not relied on a steady stream of "hits." Yes, there are a handful of songs that are reliable staples (ASOR, TS, 2112), but they also were not afraid to reach deep in their catalog. Who would ever have thought they'd break out Entre Nous or Digital Man on the S&A tour? Or 2112 in its entirety on the T4E tour, or Presto on the Time Machine tour? This is a band that respected not only the casual fans, but also the die hards, even playing songs they weren't sure they wanted to play, such as Camera Eye.

- They ended on a high note, not only with a great album in Clockwork Angles, but also a fantastic tour that took us through most of their career (aside from the synth period, which was played heavily on the previous tour. We even got to see the Holy Grail of fan requests--Losing It. Granted, they only played it on a couple of dates, but still there is a live recording.

Since they've call it quits, it's fitting that they've done so on their own terms, which pretty much epitomizes their entire career.

So thanks for over forty years of memories.

In a way i am glad it's over.It would be eons if we were to ever see any new Rush stuff if ever that was to happen.I have broad music tastes so i have plenty of other music to listen to.I'lljust sit back from time to time ,crack a beer, and pick an album and enjoy. My only regret is not seeing them live. But i suppose i've got the dvds and good sound system :hail:

Personally I think they should have called it quits in 1988 and retained their dignity, but what do I know?

Nah. I have seen every tour since AFTK. They were on fire during Snakes and Arrows. Even the CA tour was pretty amazing, Geddy's older voice and all.

The problem is though that the recorded material was pish........

As time goes on, things DIE. Naurally, this is NOT FUN, but that's the way it is. Get over it.

I'm glad they did the R40 tour but still annoyed about the set list...specifically not playing at least one song from every album and how totally awful Hemi:Prelude sounded in the dropped key tuning

The albums that were skipped had been extensively covered on the 2 previous tours, or they sucked.

Get over it.

Yep, it was a good run, now its over. I don't begrudge them for it. Wasn't their fault I didnt get into them earlier than I did, and that's my loss. Sure was fun while it lasted, and I have recordings to keep me company. Deal with it, folks.

I'm shocked to see how well the forum is taking the final split up of Rush

I think we've had some time to prepare. We all knew it was happening, but short of an "official" statement, Al's comments pretty much say it all.

I speak for myself personally, the fact that I’ve experienced seeing a few bands I liked split up/disbanded/ended (take whatever words to describe the end of a band if you will) in my lifetime, it’s inevitable and every band in existence has a shelf life if you will. It’s saddening (and more so if you never seen said band live) but the music still remains for listening consumption for fans (both longtime, and future ones from future generations). Rush is no exception for me. I don’t think we should complain or get upset about it that much considering how long they’ve remained active.

I was just happy to have even seen them live once the first time I saw the band. I’ve since seen them an additional 3 times. I can’t complain at all...if I never saw them live, I’d be a bit more disappointed but that’d be mostly towards myself for not taking the initiative of making it happen and not towards the band. It’s because of that mindset I set myself I take every band I see live as if it’s the only or in the case of a band I’ve seen in the past, the last time I’ll see the band live.

I look at it this way, it’s much better to have known than never known at all...regardless if I discover the band while still active, long disbanded, or on the brink of ending.

I'd say it's partly because the R40 tour really had a sense of finality to it. It would have been nice to see them continue, but the structure of the shows did an excellent job of conveying their entire career, wrapping things up very nicely.

So many bands either break up prematurely, or keep going long past the day when they should call it quits--with many doing a "final tour," only to change their minds due to the fan reaction. Rush went out in as fitting a manner as possible, and that has pretty much helped to soften the blow for many of us long-time fans.

Sad news. Unfortunately I only got to see them four times but I guess that's something. I suppose we'll always have the music and the memories.

I got to see them 10 times over 35 years, which could have been more, but that's OK.

I take great satisfaction from not being like some fanatics, who abandon everything - even their families, and even during the birth of children - just so they can boast about seeing the band 100+ times.

Agreed. I wonder how the forum will do

PM!

You are so wrong with that last statement! Jesus!

Good for you! 10 times in 35 years. How dare you judge others you have never met and just assume!

I've seen RUSH 60 times in 30 years. Should have been 62. Who's counting?

It doesn't matter!

My marriage of 19 years did fail but it wasn't because of my obsession with RUSH.

My ex wife and I raised two beautiful girls together over that 19 year span of traveling the country to see RUSH.

Never had an issue. Never had a problem with that. My awesome parents watched the girls during that time period. My ex's mom was also very involved with our girls.

I think it was awesome that our parents were able to spend valuable time with their granddaughters. A win win.

Rush was a HUGE part of my life yet my ex and I were able to raise amazing daughters at the same time.

Zoe is a 4.0 student and is studying kinesiology and playing D2 soccer. Sky is also a soccer star and is a 3.7 student.

Our home is broken in half yet we are still very serious about parenting and raising our girls even though they are already grown.

As far as your comment about crazy Rush fans bragging about seeing them over 100 times. That is completely ludicrous.

I am one of those Rush fans who has indeed travelled all over North America.

I have met hundreds of amazing, real, friendly and loving Rush fans. Many of these incredible Rush fans who have seen this band over 100 times are from Europe.

I could write a fuckking book about my experiences with Rush fans from around the world.

I love my perfect number of 60 shows since 1984. Pretty much three decades of seeing RUSH. Of course I missed the first decade which kills me. But alas I am satisfied and happy.

2112 times seeing RUSH isn't enough for some.

However I personally have no regrets in my life!

You seem bitter and sad that you only saw RUSH 10 times.

You should rejoice and be happy.

It's all over. Be elated with your past and embrace your reality.

RUSH IS OVER FOREVER!

I saw the birth of my two beautiful daughters. Hell I even cut the cord on both.

No regrets.

I'm divorced and happy.

I have my girls.

I am content.

^^^ thou dost seem defensive. Are you sure he was referring to you? Because long before I ever knew who you were there were posts on CP by a guy who was trying to figure out how not to miss his 100th show that was on his wife's due date. I've long since forgotten his name, but he always wore a red Rush hockey jersey in his pics.

There must be a dozen reasons why Rush is done. Wikipedia using a past tense verb isn’t one of them.

Virtually any maniac who can type can post an article there.

I expect the page to be changed back and forth from "is" to "was", as some Rush fans refuse to believe that they're done.....

I figured that CA would be their last studio album when Neil kept talking about how important it was to him to make CA the best album Rush has ever made.

IMO, they came damned close to doing it. :haz:

Personally, I wouldn't go that far, but it is a damn good album to go out on.
