Alex confirms Rush is "basically done"

It's an 80s album.

A van of thugs is on its way to your home. You will be sent to the “re-education camp” and released when your head is straight. Resistance is futile.

We have camps in the EU as well. So watch yourself mister.

Personally I think they should have called it quits in 1988 and retained their dignity, but what do I know?

I wish people would just leave Neil alone. He's 65... he's retired. Stop being so selfish and ridiculous. No wonder he stays away from fans. I would too.

Who/What are you referring to?

4 pages of this thread so far and I’ve only seen 2 TRFers who’ve stated that they wish Peart continued. And HOW they said it weren’t even in overly “selfish or ridiculous” ways. Nearly everyone in this thread has accepted Rush’s retirement. Some of those same people are just joking around...because we already accepted Rush’s retirement a while ago and there’s not much else to do but muck about.

Like most people here, I kinda figured it was over. The TSS documentary outlined that pretty clearly which I think was the intention of the band creating it anyway. I was hoping for one last record but CA was a good way to end things. I’ll miss the concerts and getting together with other fans, but I think I’ll miss the anticipation of hearing new music the most. I feel fortunate that I was able to be there since the very beginning and they will always be my favorite band.

Exactly....it's a silly argument in the first place. As of now, with no future plans, Rush is "retired". All I'm saying is given that 64/65 is still somewhat "young" now, and given human nature, it's anyone's guess whether "retirement" will be a permanent state. Personally, I still don't think it is. But if I'm wrong, I don't begrudge Rush anything.

I was willing to give them maybe another 10 years. TFE wasn't all that good of an album, but they were still in pretty good form on that tour, though dropping 2112 a full step was telling.

For me, T4E was a partial recovery actually, but sadly, it wasn't sustained....

Nah. I have seen every tour since AFTK. They were on fire during Snakes and Arrows. Even the CA tour was pretty amazing, Geddy's older voice and all.

In some strange way I kinda wish they stick to their retirement. It would be so typically classy of them to go out without any big announcements of a farewell. Just a excellent last studio record and the R40 tour that saw the band while they were still firing on all sylinders. The thing that really bugs me is that they never took that last tour to Europe. But otherwise, as the situation seems to be now Rush has just made the most brilliant exit in the history of rock imo. Edited by Freeze

They stated long ago that there would not be a "Farewell Tour" and no reunion tours. Once they decided that it was over, then that would be that.

They have been true to their word. :haz: :haz:

Here's the thing. The guys in RUSH have dabbled and experimented with drugs, but not to the extent that other acts have.

The other ones who took 'alcohol and drugs' to the extreme, either paid a price for it when they were young ('27 Club') or having severe health failures later on, which they passed on from.

With a lot of the 'baby boomer era' music acts who've passed on in 2016 and 2017, it puts life into perspective.

The guys (and especially Neil) probably had the foresight and premonition to know that it was time to stop after 40 years.

There's music acts that claim wanting to tour until they croak and/or die onstage.

Also, with reading news about key band members passing away midway through a tour on the bus, hotel room, or immediately after a tour etc. is kind of a let down to fans. The tour either is cancelled with refunds or the music act carries on with another newer member substituting.

Boston Drummer Sib Hashian, Yes bassist Chris Squire, Tom Petty, Scott Weiland, and Chris Cornell are some of the examples described in the above sentence.

I don't the guys in RUSH would want the above to happen for each of them.

This is silly. for each example you cite above, I can point to others going into their 70's: David Gilmour, Roger Waters, BB King, Yes, The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, The Dead, Camel, King Crimson, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, Jimmy Buffet, etc, etc.

I threw BB in there because he went until he was almost 90. But everyone else in still alive, touring, and older than the Rush guys.

And by the way, both Alex and Ged have talked about going until someone dies.....moreso in interviews conducted in the last 10 years. The only reason they aren't doing SOMETHING is because Neil is done.

I've said this a few times already.

The song 'The Garden' and the 'Clockwork Angels' album were both the epitaph to RUSH's career.

The 'Clockwork Angels' album itself is an homage meaning 'something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue' type of thing.

I instinctively was aware from the last tour date of the 'R40 Live 40th Anniversary Tour' that the band was 'done'.

Geddy and Alex at the time were in denial about it and debunking 'rumors' in the press and from Neil about 'being done'.

RUSH isn't going to be The Who and retire and come back a few times over.

When Neil says he's satisfied with the 'Clockwork Angels' album and tour, what does that say?

When Neil doesn't contribute liner notes for the R40 live album and concert film, what does that say?

When another Canadian music publisher ole acquires Anthem Entertainment Group, what does that say?

When Alex says that he and Geddy haven't heard from Neil in awhile, what does that say?

When deluxe album reissues are released with Geddy and Alex doing press and Neil isn't involved, what does that say?

Neil will provide input and give thumbs up to projects where the 'Clockwork Angels' brand is utilized by Kevin J. Anderson in the form of books, graphic novels, possible future films, etc.

Come on fellow fans, hasn't this sunk in already from August 2015?

I said my goodbyes in Tampa with my son and wife and then again with my fellow band-mates (at the time of 24 years) at the MGM Garden Arena on the R40 tour. I partied like a rock star that Vegas weekend in what was an amazing finale to my Rush concert going experiences. My son (turning 13 in March) was able to see them 4 times. I told him you are lucky you got that. Before he was born I thought it was over (1998).

It was an amazing run, and many many moments of my life can be defined by each album they have released since 1981. I got to enjoy the absolute prime of their career, their experimentation period, their poppy period, then back to the roots and the climax was an incredible two more albums in S&A and CA. For guys to produce that kind of raw power and passion at that stage of their career is marvelous. I will cherish every single memory I have of the band.

And guess what. I have more than enough incredible boots, albums and live Blue rays and DVD's to hold me over the rest of my life. And the fact my son is also a monster fan tells me the music will live on for generations.

I would love to hear Geddy do another solo record. And Alex for that matter. I listened to MFH again this past week. It is a little gem of a record. Alex's Victor? Not so much. But some great moments and a few good tunes on it.

A lot of the music acts born in the 20's and 30's such as Chuck Berry, Les Paul, and BB King didn't partake in heavy drug use and drink. They're music (referring to BB King) didn't get a lot of airplay either. However their music wasn't complex and demanding to play, which is the difference.

As time goes on, the subsequent generations of musicians are dying younger. Michael Jackson, Prince, and George Michael passed on in their 50's, and the earlier band members have passed on in their late 60's and early 70's.

A lot of the new music that David Gilmour, The Stones, and Paul McCartney have recorded doesn't hold a candle to the classics. Whereas Roger Waters writes for the times.

The above mentioned bands have multiple revolving door members throughout.

?????

Chuck Berry was a heroin addict. BB King was diabetic. Both wrote music that was physically demanding to play and perform.

Gilmour's "On an Island" record was Al's main inspiration for the guitar parts he wrote on "Snakes and Arrows". The rest of what you're saying is completely subjective and irrelevant. All of the acts I mentioned put on world-class shows for hardcore, demanding audiences. They just obviously tour smarter than Neil did, when it comes to preserving their longevity.

To be perfectly honest, I've seen this be brought up before in the past but I'm going to consider Rush to be together until I see an official announcement on their website or social media.

Everything that everyone is saying here is subjective and irrelevant.

None of us know the band.

None of us are even close to being experts in maintaining a long and successful career in rock & roll.

None of us have any qualifications to tell any band when and how they should call it quits.

They aren't the kind of band that would post an official announcement unlike some acts. They're going quietly with this.

Agreed. I'll respect their decision, but I'm not going to go around pointing fingers at them for not making it official like I originally said they should. Anyways, hats of to the band for the good music.

That´s comforting at least. I´m not happy that they´re retired because I wanted more music from them. I listented to R40 in full the other day, and thought it sounded amazing. But if that´s what they want to do, I´m glad one of them finally told us DIRECTLY that they´re done.

I'm happy Rod.

60 shows

30 years.

Third row and then up the front for the LA Forum Show. Saw it all man.

Got divorced that same year.

My marriage ended the same year RUSH did.

Surprised I didn't commit suicide.

Things happen for a reason.

I am sooooooooooooooooooooooo happy now.

Selfishly I'm glad RUSH retired. I couldn't afford paying for the first three rows anymore thanks to alimony and child support.

You have a lovely family Rod.

Hope you stay together FOREVER.

I'm done with love.

I will live alone for the rest of my life.

Happy and free in love with me.

RUSH ON!
