The song 'The Garden' and the 'Clockwork Angels' album were both the epitaph to RUSH's career. The 'Clockwork Angels' album itself is an homage meaning 'something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue' type of thing. I instinctively was aware from the last tour date of the 'R40 Live 40th Anniversary Tour' that the band was 'done'. Geddy and Alex at the time were in denial about it and debunking 'rumors' in the press and from Neil about 'being done'. RUSH isn't going to be The Who and retire and come back a few times over. When Neil says he's satisfied with the 'Clockwork Angels' album and tour, what does that say? When Neil doesn't contribute liner notes for the R40 live album and concert film, what does that say? When another Canadian music publisher ole acquires Anthem Entertainment Group, what does that say? When Alex says that he and Geddy haven't heard from Neil in awhile, what does that say? When deluxe album reissues are released with Geddy and Alex doing press and Neil isn't involved, what does that say? Neil will provide input and give thumbs up to projects where the 'Clockwork Angels' brand is utilized by Kevin J. Anderson in the form of books, graphic novels, possible future films, etc. Come on fellow fans, hasn't this sunk in already from August 2015? Ron2112 Posted January 17, 2018 Share Posted January 17, 2018 I thoroughly enjoyed listening to R40 the other day like I said here - my memory was of not enjoying it as much when it first came out. But yeah, you could definitely hear why Neil decided he didn´t want to do it anymore. There are many drum fills on R40 that he simplified a lot, especially in the older material. Compare that album even with not so old performances - The Camera Eye from the Time Machine versus R40, for example - and you´ll see what I mean. TCE is a poor example. It was only played a handful of times on R40 and I don't think the band ever found their groove with it on R40. Alex's guitar playing doesn't sound very tight on that song either. This opinion is often held by fans who are thinking more about their desire to see Rush keep playing than about a musician's personal desire to retire. Deciding when to pack it in is a deeply personal decision by every individual. The right time to retire is whenever YOU want it to be, and no one has any business telling you that you're "too young". Of course. But "retiring" from a creative endeavor isn't the same as retiring from being a plumber or and engineer or whatever. You either have a drive to make music or you don't. There are examples to be found everywhere from national acts to local bands, of guys well into their 70s still having vital careers. And per my message above, if Neil gave the green light, Al and Ged would be there in a heartbeat. There's nothing about the "physical limitations" that Neil cited that couldn't be mitigated by smarter touring, if indeed that was the ONLY thing holding him back. If Neil doesn't like being a drummer anymore -- period -- well, then that's another story. THIS is the most telling aspect of the whole retirement. It suggests a whole lot of other things going on that have nothing to do with Neil's physical state. Fordgalaxy Posted January 17, 2018 Share Posted January 17, 2018 That's AMAZING that Alex is doing things outside of :rush: To be honest I am glad :rush: is done bc now the guys have time to relax n wind down after non stop touring for 40+ years. Don't attack me but come on guys, they don't need to go back on the road, let them be done. It's there choice so respect it, no mater what. No attack, and I'm happy for all the great music they put out there, but 64 is too young to pack it in. Especially given the state of the "rock industry", it would be good to have Rush still out there. I believe that most of us would retire at 64 or earlier if they could afford to. The bright side for those still in disbelief about Rush’s demise is that Lifeson has been wrong about his proclamations before (music video releases back in the 80s, album releases, tours, and probably a bunch of other stuff).
