Awake is one of their best, and it's better than Images. Scenes and Awake are their two 90s albums that stand well above the rest.

I heard some of Scenes once, it sounded good, but I didn't pay much attention and didn't get all the way through it.

I like Dream Theater.

I've liked them a lot in the past.

I've cared for them a little less in the more recent pass.

I like them a lot more in the even more recent past, as in the past few weeks and especially days.

My dad and I just got Awake, which no one ever told me was their best album, or at least the best one that'd I'd have heard yet if I were to listen to it. IMO, blows Images away, great as Images is, blows ADToE away, as epic as that is, blows Octavarium away, great as the title track is, and blows 6DoIT away, great as the suite is. Probably blows the Astonishing away too, but I've still only gotten through half of that album.

Awake is my new favorite Dream Theater album, the mini suite with Voices in it might be my new favorite Dream Theater piece, and lastly Space-Dye Vest is so awesome. I should've gotten this thing YEARS ago.

What do folks here think of Awake in comparison to the rest of their discography?

My favorites are When Dream And Day Unite Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence and Octavarium.

I like Awake a lot but not quite as much as those three.

Fair enough. It's certainly not for everyone, but since I got into metal over the past year, I think that's opened me up to loving Awake a lot more.

Awake is a great album. I just like those three better.

There are only two Dream Theater albums I'm not really into: Train Of Thought (like about half) and Systematic Chaos (Only dig Constant Motion, Repentance and Prophets Of War (Probably my favorite from that album.)

I've recently been made aware of how they've banned fans taking video at their shows....I don't know how I feel about that. The phones at concerts do get a little annoying but a sweeping ban on video seems very Draconian.

I didn't know about that but good on them for doing so. People need to actually watch the show and remember it not try to annoying take a video or pic every f***in minute. Enjoy and experience what is happening in front of you and not worry about how many likes you'll get if you post something useless on your social media.

Danzig has been doing this for a while now. It doesn't affect his concert attendance at all and it makes for a great, old school concert vibe where people are actually paying attention to the show. Imagine that, enjoying what's right there in front of you.

I'm happy to ban phones at concerts. People don't seem to know how to just live in the moment anymore

I wonder that if the concept of head-mounted optical displays were to be revisited and made more efficient, reliable, and affordable.....the phones at concerts issue would be resolved, as they wouldn't be needed anymore.

That was just for The Astonishing Tour because they decided they wanted it presented a certain way putting the focus on the music and didn't want the phones to distract from the show. I didn't bother with the last nostalgia tour, but I've read there wasn't any specific ban at that point.

From what I've heard the last tour had a pretty mixed response. I&W is an incredibly hard album to sing which is why they probably pulled most of that album minus PME and Metropolis out of their standard song rotation. As such they tuned the entire album + ACOS down a half step for James but even then he had a hard time singing it, especially on stuff like Take The Time. The first set looked glorious. Dark Eternal Night, Breaking All Illusions, The Bigger Picture, that's just awesome.

Looking forward to the new album next year. The Astonishing isn't everyone's cup of tea and it certainly wasn't mine. Since around Train of Thought they've been putting out a great album about every-other-album.

ToT - mixed bag

Octavarium - I personally love it but it's not everyone's favorite

Systematic Chaos - very mixed bag, pretty low for me

BCSL - one of my all time favorites

ADTOE - mixed bag, hurts that they tried to rewrite I&W

Self titled - another one of my all time favorites

Astonishing - not for me

2019 album - another home run?

I've been getting back into DT after cooling on them. And despite all the negatives i've said. they really still are one of my fav bands.

My favs.

Six Degrees

Octavarium

Scenes from A Memory

Images

Dream Theater (this is one of my very fav albums period.)

Train of Thought

Falling into Infinity (underrated IMO)

The Astonishing was a dud.....but hey....it happens. looking forward to the next one all the same.

After about a year and a half of being a DT fan, I finally had the chance to see them at the Fox Theater in Oakland on October 25th. I made a post about the concert in the concert reviews thread but I'll give my thoughts here since this is THE Dream Theater thread for TRF. Anyways, I made myself a note to not do a bunch of filming, I fell somewhat into that trap. However, I filmed small sections (no more than a minute long) of songs which were about 7 or so. I had second row seats more towards where John Myung was. Crowd wise, I believe the venue was packed and maybe even a sold out show. There were a lot of people sitting which I was a bit irritated by since I was expecting everybody to be standing. Overall, it was the best show I'd ever been to and I will plan on seeing them again on their next album's tour.

By the way........Sons of Apollo was complete crap. sorry if their are fans here.

no where close to your best Mike.

Mick

Portnoy has so many bands and side projects since leaving DT. I don't pay attention to any of them because it just seems like too much to keep track of.

I guess it just boils down to me not really caring about him outside of DT. If he came back then I would pay attention to him again.

My ranking of the few that I've heard:

Awake

Images

ADTOE

Six Degrees

Octavarium

Awake is currently my primary reason for still caring about DT. So glad I finally listened to this.

That was actually my first DT album, Yeah, I think it's pretty great. A little overstuffed at times, but everything there is more than worth a listen.

Wait, you haven't heard Scenes From A Memory yet? You listened to Octavarium and Dramatic Turn first? Seriously?

Wait, you haven't heard Scenes From A Memory yet? You listened to Octavarium and Dramatic Turn first? Seriously?

I once heard a radio station list a top ten prog rock albums of all time, and ADTOE and 2112 were the top two (this was like, 2012 or so), so I obviously had to check out who was giving Rush a run for their money and the album they claimed was so good. Nowadays I know that was probably just because ADTOE had just come out, but nevertheless that's the first one I checked out. Then I got Images And Words after reading that it was actually their best album, then I figured I could go whichever way I pleased so I looked into Octavarium and a live concert where they played the whole 6DOIT suite. Between then and now I had the s/t and Scenes checked out from my library, but I didn't listen to them very well or very much and I don't remember them much now. I've also listened to the first disc of TA once, but I didn't have the stamina at the time to continue onto the second disc.

So then, after hearing Octavarium again, and remembering what I do love about DT, my dad and I got Awake, and suddenly DT started mattering to me again. So Scenes is probably next.

If you haven’t already, listen to the Twelve Step Suite.
