Entre_Perpetuo
I can't like almost any of these lists because they all have songs that don't belong on 80s lists... sad. I don't want to argue, but I think musically Permanent Waves is the 80's album! And if it has been released on November 20, 1979 in my book it would be the 80's album. That album doesn't sound like the 70's rock at all and it represents a big shift in musical style of a band. You don't want to argue, so you start a poll and a new thread about it...sure. Hey mate chill, just chill. Be cool man repect his opinions. I am chill, just saying he seems to be talking out of both sides of his mouth, but it's whatever.

toymaker
The album IS 70s rock. It has to be. It was written and recorded in the 70s. Not sayin' they weren't ahead of their time. No frickin' way is Freewill an 80s sound. Moving Pictures, brilliant as it is, is the first venture into the 80s sound. But I'll shut up about it. For a while.
Rutlefan
I don't understand why the presence of synths is an argument for being an '80s sound. Synths had been used in pop/prog music through the '70s. In the meat of the '80s, synths formed the basis or foundation of songs, unlike the '70s. That's the distinction and that didn't really start happening for Rush until Signals. If one is going to argue what decade an album belongs in simply by the sound, then Moving Pictures is their last '70s album and Signals is their first '80s album, in part at least -- by GUP and PoW they were full '80s, but it's really from Signals on that Rush sounded like a "different" band from the one people had know through the '70s. PeW and MP are totally the AOR everyone had been familiar with for years. New wave had been around for four years -- since 1978 at least -- by MP's release and no one thought MP was an any way remotely New Wave. A few synths does not New Wave or '80s music make, just ask ELP and many others. It's really not rocket science :). Last note, the argument that PeW is '80s because of shorter songs, Rush had been making plenty of short songs through the '70s. The only Rush album with fewer tracks than PeW is Hemispheres; throw in CoS if you want to count Fountain of Lamneth as one track, but the point is that PeW is not a sudden huge change from what Rush had been doing from the beginning; in fact it's no change at all, it's only a marked change from side one of Hemispheres and 2112, and side 2 (maybe) of CoS.
