More like space fantasy.

Not sure how they could have filmed the Leia in space thing any differently. I'm guessin' she's frozen solid, so she's going to look like a static image moving toward the ship. If they had shown it a different way, I'm sure people would have still gone on about how "unrealistic" it looks. You either suspend your disbelief, or you don't. People who are too critical really suck the fun out of things. The makers of Star Wars are going to get dumped on no matter what they do.

And it's not like she was completely unaffected by the vacuum of space. She barely survived it. She used the Force to protect her body from fatal damage and to heal herself.

Mary Poppins Leia

Many have said this, but I didn't have a problem with it at all.

She's a Skywalker, and she has had over 30 years to learn the ways of the Force. Why couldn't she use the Force to save herself from the vacuum of space?

physics?

You're bringing physics to a SciFi/Fantasy thread? :o :o :D

I'll give you three guesses where the "sci" in "scifi" is from.

Sciatic nerve?

Scissors?

Scimitar?

;) ;)

I disagree. There's been plenty of praise on this thread, for example. But I think it's fair to say that a scene that invokes so much laughter from adults and kids alike was a bad choice.

Despite my grade. i still liked the film quite a bit.

just cutting was needed. the pacing was pretty bad.

but the Kylo/rey stuff was great.

Luke training her i loved.......that yoda cameo.....hell yes.

just as a film it was trying to do WAY to much.

I've still never watched a Star Wars film from start to finish. I think 20 minutes is the longest I've lasted.

That’s how I am with Lord of the Rings. I tried the first one 2 or 3 times and fell asleep every time in about 20 minutes.

I saw about 5-10 minutes of part 2 before I just walked out of the room.

I saw the last 30-40 minutes of part 3 and that bastard of a movie wouldn’t end. It just wouldn’t end!!

That's how I feel with nearly every Marvel movie.

NOTE I SAID NEARLY!!

The original comics are where it's at anyway.

And the old telly cartoons

My problem with that scene is this: other than allusions to Leia’s ability with the Force we’ve never seen her actually use it. She very well could be a Super Jedi Master but we would have no way of knowing this. To just have her survive exposure to outer space and fly (not to mention them opening that bay door with no effects at all) like that was, well, laughable.

We’ve never seen any Jedi do anything remotely like that and they just throw that on us with Leia?? No. And if she’s that powerful why the hell does Rey need to bother chasing down Luke? If Leia’s that powerful then why did so many things have to happen?

Okay - points taken. Not so much as a tee-hee in the two theatres I saw it in, but obviously lots of netboys and netgirls are making fun of the thing, as the youtube evidence shows.

I guess I just try to take it as a big comic-book-like spectacle. To me Leia floating back to the ship ain't that much different from how characters in movies fall off a wall and land on their back and get up again, or get shot multiple times and keep on comin', or team up with talking racoons that carry weapons that weigh more than they do, etc. etc. etc.

What did you like or dislike about it?

I saw it last night. For the most part, I liked the plot, the dialogue, and the acting. Yes, the movie is loaded with action and special effects, but those attributes no longer seem to impress me in movies. Things I didn't like were the sometimes bad dialogue and acting, and the goddamn SNL-style humor in the movie. I get that humor has always been woven into the SW movies ("laugh it up, Fuzzball", "aren't you a little short for a Stormtrooper", etc.), but the humor works best when it's sparse and "throwaway", imo. I seriously considered walking out during the "I'm holding for General Hux" skit. I'm glad I didn't, but damn, that was just terrible.

I'm not happy at all with the current trend of film makers forcing contemporary America slang and vulgarities into their SciFi/Fantasy films. The General Hux scene wasn't too bad, IMO, but they could have worded it differently. It's supposed to be long ago, in a galaxy far, far away, but we get people talking exactly like US.

Guardians of The Galaxy comes immediately to mind. To me, it's very irritating to put up with the American vulgarities spewed by beings who have never even been to Earth much less the USA. I like Thor much better when he's talking like THOR, and not like one of the guys down in NYC.

But who cares about Episode VII, VIII or IX anymore....

Episodes X, XI & XII are coming! Directed by none other than Rian Johnson..... :eh:

I thought the film sucked big time. A billion dollar franchise and that's the best story they could come up with. This one was pretty darn close to Phantom Menace bad.

I thought it had peaks that matched Empire and valleys that matched (eclipsed, even?) the prequels.

Actually he is doing a new series unrelated to the current one. NOT 10-12.

Eh, it's not really out of the realm of possibility to see Leia do that kind of thing. It's always been heavily hinted. It's a bit of a goofy looking scene, no doubt. But it's not really that unbelievable in this universe. And they need Luke because he's the one who failed Ben in the first place. It's played out in both films that Ben has that pull to the light. So, Luke's presence, both as a light source and a Jedi Master (in case he needs to fight Ben), is pretty essential. They already alluded to the fact that Ben wouldn't kill his mother, so why not get Luke and try to have that pull for Ben to join the light side of the Force? I admit that the execution isn't flawless. But if they assume that Kylo is that powerful with the First Order behind him, then why not get Luke? My problem with it is that it would've been better had Luke already been trying to train new Jedi in order to counter the First Order forces during the movie. But that's me.

Aside from all that, some of the criticism of this movie is laughable. Luke fishing and getting breast milk to survive on the island isn't exactly a big deal. How do people think he lived there? You can't use the Force to feed yourself. And then we get the big to do about Kylo with his shirt off. Who cares? He has his shirt off for two seconds. Oh my. Must be awful. The whole Canto Bight sequence is said to be super long and boring, but it isn't really that long. It's actually kind of endearing that they freed those animals. They could've handled it better without a whole escape scene, though. Then there are the Porgs. People acting like Disney is making Star Wars some big toy brand is absolutely hilarious. No doubt Porgs were created for that reason, but some fans hold this odd belief that Star Wars was never a toy brand before. And Porgs appear for how long in this movie? A total of five minutes? Come on. Some of the criticisms are beyond ridiculous. Seems like people just waited to pounce on some of these things and turn them into massive problems with the movie.

There are legitimate criticisms, though. Luke tossing his lightsaber away is anti-climactic. They could've handled that better. Same with the whole handling of information given to Poe. Phasma was useless once again. I'm okay with Snoke being killed, as it legitimizes the power Kylo and Rey have. I mean, people keep wanting some backstory to Snoke, and I get that to some extent. But fans also wanted him to be Palpatine, or even Anakin. I've seen the fan theories. They're so laughable, I can't even bother with them. To me, it's not a huge deal that Snoke isn't really a major player... assuming he is actually dead. Do we really need another Emperor-type bad guy? Doing away with him isn't really all that bad to me.

TL;DR - Movie has way too many odd criticisms leveled against it. It does have its fair share of flaws, however.

Finally saw it today and most folks here have voiced the same concerns and the same praises I have for it. So I will be brief and say I gave it a C+. It was the first Star Wars movie I came away feeling this dissatisfied about since Attack of the Clones. My wife looked at me as it ended and asked, "That's the way it's going to end??" There was just a general sense of not being engaged with the film for both of us. There was stuff to like but generally we had a feeling that it was too long and poorly paced. Also we felt nothing really fit into a sensible framework for where the series should be going. I'm all for shaking things up but some of it seemed wrong.

As for my rankings of the entire series:

Empire

New Hope

Jedi

Awakens

Rogue

Sith

Last Jedi

Phantom Menace

Clones

A valid question. I enjoyed the film very much, but I see the potential for the series ending with a thud.

I trust JJ Abrams to come up with something great, but he may have to pull out all the stops in Episode IX. Relying on Rey & Ben and a few non-essential supporting characters (like Finn & Rose) isn't going to cut it.

*fingers crossed* Because I felt this one had all the hype with none of the payoff.

I'm looking forward to Abrams last film. Cause TFA still holds up for me. it will probably continue to hold up WAY better than TLJ will for me.

yea......i may skip Rian Johnson's new trilogy.

Maybe.

You can't use the Force to feed yourself.

But you can use it to escape the void of space.

OK.

Well, yeah. That's how it works. People can make lightning out of their hands and choke people from several feet away. Using it to move isn't outside the saga's realm. If Luke used it to have a lasagna appear, it would be out of the realm.
