Fridge
"When you're on junk you have only one worry: scoring. When you're off it you are suddenly obliged to worry about all sorts of other shite. Got no money: can't get pissed. Got money: drinking too much. Can't get a bird: no chance of a ride. Got a bird: too much hassle. You have to worry about bills, about food, about some football team that never f***ing wins, about human relationships and all the things that really don't matter when you've got a sincere and truthful junk habit." Mr. Not
Most people simply lack the intellectual curiosity or indeed the ability to understand anything more complex than macaroni and cheese in a box. That's why they put pictures on fast food menus. (my friend laklak aka Hugh)Just curious about your home...is it a little house, by chance? While not at all a study, I once heard a poor young adult speak about his own observable experience. He claimed that fast food industries were designed to keep the poor impoverished - while they advertise cheap filling meals, they actually cost a hell of a lot more than the raw materials in order to make equally filling (and much more healthy) ones. I didn't buy into this, and thought that instead that over the years the convenience of fast food economically ruled over buying the nuts and bolts & preparing the meal yourself (I still stand by this - people are so lazy and/or stripped of time that a 6 dollar ready-to-go sandwich makes more sense than 4 ready-to-go sandwiches for the same price -- but you have to prepare it for yourself) Is that where you're coming from with this? :P

Every social association that is not face-to-face is injurious to your health” - Nassim Nicholas Taleb If you truly believed that then why would you spend time on TRF whatsoever? I like that quote because it is reassuring to me - and I did read it using the technology of the internet .. But in this case, I feel it is much the same as reading a book .. I come to TRF and enjoy it here for a number of reasons .. I have learned a lot about music that I had not been exposed to, and I feel that is similar to, years ago, when I would read Circus or Kerrang magazine .. so in that respect, it's not really social, but enlightening .. I am not anti technology .. I feel that there can be - and definitely is abuse of technology, and we all have our own lines that we feel comfortable with .. I do think that some of what goes on here - as can happen anywhere, be it in person or online - is unhealthy, and I'm not saying that I'm not guilty .. but there are a few people here that I do know and have met face to face, so that sort of makes it worthwhile .. Quotes that are meaningful can simply be inspiring ..

Quotes that are meaningful can simply be inspiring .. So the quote just sort of translates to a reduced "pursue whatever is meaningful, don't bother with the rest"? It is going to mean something different to each person .. For example, my friend Mike called me Christmas Eve and left a massage - and sincere one, wishing me and my family a good holiday ... when I heard the message, I figured that I could just send him a message with the same ... But quotes like the above will give me pause, and earlier this week, I stopped by Mike's house to see him ... I fully admit that I am guilty of falling into patterns and ruts, and something as simple as a quote can be the one small thing that slaps my ass out of the routine ... And I say "reassuring" because the people who make these quotes do so having felt these things ... You don't make a quote like that unless you have been guilty of at least feeling those things .. and it's not hypocritical, it is just honest
Lucas
Sturgeon's Law I repeat Sturgeon's Revelation, which was wrung out of me after twenty years of wearying defense of science fiction against attacks of people who used the worst examples of the field for ammunition, and whose conclusion was that ninety percent of SF is crud. Using the same standards that categorize 90% of science fiction as trash, crud, or crap, it can be argued that 90% of film, literature, consumer goods, etc. is crap. In other words, the claim (or fact) that 90% of science fiction is crap is ultimately uninformative, because science fiction conforms to the same trends of quality as all other artforms Theodore Sturgeon
