A quick solo

That was really good. Nice funky tone, and it's weird for all the right reasons. I wish I could come up with that kind of solo, but it's hard to put myself in that kind of place, so I really admire those who can.

Thanks. stoopid said he reminded him of Zappa. I've listened to all of about 90 seconds of Zappa in my life, so any similarities is purely coincidental!

I remember you and I talking about having a similar approach to composing a solo -- sort of a cumulative improv where we track an idea, keep what works and build up from there. This was my first foray into thinking about what to play before I played it (it's also version 3 of that process). The only piece of pure improv in the whole solo is that little burst right at the beginning. I just needed something to set the overall vibe of where I thought it could go. From that point on, I actually say down with my guitar and worked out each passage piece by piece.

You've probably listened to a lot of musicians who listen to Zappa though. :P

Really liked that...as has been mentioned, there is definitely some Zappa in there with regard to the atonal jazz style phrasing....the tone was interesting too, were you using single coils for it?

Yes, neck pickup.
