J.J. Abrams will co-write Episode IX witth Chris Terrio, in addition to producing the film through his company, Bad Robot Productions, with Kathleen Kennedy and Michelle Rejwan.

I wonder where they’ll go with this. Kylo Ren has been thoroughly beaten twice. Additionally, the rebels are moving on and it looks as if the next generation of Jedi is ready to blossom.

Yes, it will be very hard to top what happened in The Last Jedi. I see the possibility of Episode IX being very anti-climactic, unless......

We haven't seen the last of Luke or even Snoke. There must be a Final Battle between Rey and Ben, so I imagine that will be ramped up to epic levels. Maybe they'll split open a mountain or two....

I agree with a lot of what was said here. The second act was bad, but I loved the third act. Also, the tone was off for me: there were a lot of silly jokes that I really thought were funny, but which took me out of the Star Wars feel. There are always moments of levity in a Star Wars movie, but this was just a bit too much for me.

I actually laughed when Luke was brushing a reed on Rey's hand and was all like "it's the force, you can feel it ooooh" Honestly it was good humor, I laughed when Luke threw the lightsaber off the cliff because of how dramatic the Force Awakens ended when Rey reached Luke, it was a funny anticlimax. All in all, I absolutely loved this film. But then again, characters are never that important to me. Even in my own writing, I don't write a plot to serve the characters, I write characters to serve the plot. In my opinion, the plot is metaphysical and can exist outside of the characters. They give it spice. You can have a film that has every character nameless and originless, and have a great film. A good example is Under the Skin with Scarlet Johanssen.

Plot >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> characters

What was the plot? I think you might be confusing plot with “feelings”. Everyone had a lot of feelings...it looked pretty and al but at the end of the day the actions didn’t feel motivated and the plot was lame

What was the plot?

The plot is the same as that of the original trilogy. The battle between the Republic/Resistance against the Evil Empire, the schism between the Jedi Order and the Sith/Dark Side, and the personal evolution of the main characters (Rey/Ben, Luke/Vader).

The Last Jedi ended in the same way as The Empire Strikes Back ended. The Resistance seems doomed, the Hero narrowly escapes the Villain, and we're not sure of what will happen next.

An evil “empire” that we assumed was basically a terrorist group until the opening score ran and we found out they had an Armada. The resistance, who is apparently down to like 4 ships and a handful of fighters.

You are correct in saying that the end has a similar setup to Empire Strikes Back. The overall motivations “evil empire vs rebels” is the same...maybe I define “plot” differently. I’m thinking in terms of the details, motivations and events that drive the story. To me, all of those things were severely lacking.

There are moments that are great here, but the movie itself is not so fine. It's a film of memorable moments rather than a fine picture. It's a 100 minute movie, at best, and probably a very good one at that (editing is a BIG ISSUE. Worst edited film in the entire series, including any prequel where, at the very least, Lucas has always had an editing knack). And where you might think "more" Star Wars equals great (we all want our favorite bands to put out 18 songs instead of 9, right, at least in theory?), that's not necessarily so here.

Also every character introduced in the last film I actually like LESS in this film. All of them. Snoke may be the exception, but of the three heavies -Finn, Rey, and Poe - all were all better written and executed last go 'round.

Say what you want about the derivative nature of The Force Awakens, it's a better film...and a better Star Wars movie...made by a better director. The Last Jedi has more flaws than fine moments and not because I'm picking nits, but because they stand out. I made a list of each and it was liking picking my favorite songs from 1984-1989 Kiss. You can take those four albums and make one great one. That's kind of how The Last Jedi works for me.

Of course I will see it again and, if history means anything, it'll settle down and I'll like it more, but I'm actually a bit afraid I will like it LESS.

So right there with you. Some awesome moments. But overall? It fell so flat for me. Disjointed and a mess overall. It does not even come close to the original trilogy, nor TFA or Rogue One.

I even have it behind Revenge Of The Sith.

It is at number 7/9 right now after just one viewing. Potential to move ahead of ROTS? Yeah maybe. But it was not a good movie overall. The Force Awakens was a lot better. And Rogue One.....is to me in the original Trilogy conversation now. It is the missing link from Episode III to Episode 4 and required viewing IMO before you pop in A New Hope.

I hope JJ brings Episode 9 back to the quality of The Force Awakens.

It’s pretty simple. After seeing The Force Awakens I was raving that Star Wars was back!!!! Even more so after Rogue One. After this? Nope.....3 steps back.

Not a bad film.....but not nearly up to snuff with at a minimum 5 Star Wars films.....but Imo 6 (I really like Episode III).
