Principled Man
IM SOBBING. BETTER THAN EMPIRE. It was SOMETHING! :o :D I took my niece to see it. I preached to her, "Clear your mind of all your expectations and theories of how it's going to go."She didn't listen......LOL. She's upset! Principled Man
Better than Empire? I guess I'll find out for sure tomorrow night when I see it. Opinions will vary on that issue, I'm sure. I'm seeing it again tomorrow with my mother, so it will be interesting to see if my opinion changes.

I don’t think so anyway. Not even close. It has its moments but I don’t think it's great. Good, yes....well, parts of it were. I don’t want to say anything more than that. I also enjoyed Rogue One more. Force Awakens seemed more fun overall too. Parts of this were more interesting than Force Awakens though. One particular Laura Dern scene was quality though. I’m sure you know which one I mean.

Principled Man
Force Awakens seemed more fun overall too. Parts of this were more interesting than Force Awakens though. Without knowing how you define "fun", I think The Last Jedi is pretty serious and dramatic. The Empire Strikes Back was also quite serious. I'm still digesting the film, but last night, I was thoroughly captivated. I don't remember taking my eyes off the screen. For me, that's a good indicator of a successful film. Yeah it was serious and dramatic but honestly, I didn’t care about a lot of those characters. And characters are a big deal to me. At one point in the movie I thought, “Oh, it’s not over yet? I thought that’s it.” So I didn’t take my eyes off of it either but when it kept going when I thought it could’ve ended...well, that’s not the best of signs to me. I’d still probably give it a 7 out of 10 points because there were enough good parts in it. So the Star Wars films are now at 6-3 with me. And the Han Solo prequel is a mere 5 months away. Bring it.
invisible airwave
Watching previews now before it hours before I go to work since my mom and sister are in town to visit for weekend. Presto-digitation
There are moments that are great here, but the movie itself is not so fine. It's a film of memorable moments rather than a fine picture. It's a 100 minute movie, at best, and probably a very good one at that (editing is a BIG ISSUE. Worst edited film in the entire series, including any prequel where, at the very least, Lucas has always had an editing knack). And where you might think "more" Star Wars equals great (we all want our favorite bands to put out 18 songs instead of 9, right, at least in theory?), that's not necessarily so here. Also every character introduced in the last film I actually like LESS in this film. All of them. Snoke may be the exception, but of the three heavies -Finn, Rey, and Poe - all were all better written and executed last go 'round. Say what you want about the derivative nature of The Force Awakens, it's a better film...and a better Star Wars movie...made by a better director. The Last Jedi has more flaws than fine moments and not because I'm picking nits, but because they stand out. I made a list of each and it was liking picking my favorite songs from 1984-1989 Kiss. You can take those four albums and make one great one. That's kind of how The Last Jedi works for me. Of course I will see it again and, if history means anything, it'll settle down and I'll like it more, but I'm actually a bit afraid I will like it LESS.
theredtamasrule
Oh my god this film is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyy too long. And, I’m sorry to say, kinda boring. Halfway through i was looking at my watch. Sure it had good moments but they, for me, were too few and too far between. The main plot driver (no pun intended) is beyond absurd. I learned nothing new about the characters, which by the way, there are too too many. Too many people running around, too many threads. Too much. This script needed a knife taken to it. Lots of wheel spinning for no good purpose. So, yeah...didn’t much care for it.
Principled Man
Just got back from seeing it again. I still had goosebumps from several of the scenes. :D Yes, it's pretty long. Yes, they could have edited some stuff out. The same could be said about a lot of successful films. With epic films like Star Wars and Lord Of The Rings, I don't fret over the length. It's fantasy storytelling. I've taken quite a liking to the overall themes of the film. It made some good social and political commentary that is relevant to the real world. I also like how many of my plot and character expectations were totally beaten down. I LIKE surprises!! It's gonna be really interesting to see where Episode IX goes. Two years of waiting? EGADS..... theredtamasrule
I don’t care how long a movie is, regardless of genre, as long as the pacing and story is well told. And this movie has neither a well thought out plot and drags pointlessly for large stretches. I will see this movie, like The Force Awakens, only once. LedRush
I agree with a lot of what was said here. The second act was bad, but I loved the third act. Also, the tone was off for me: there were a lot of silly jokes that I really thought were funny, but which took me out of the Star Wars feel. There are always moments of levity in a Star Wars movie, but this was just a bit too much for me.

I actually laughed when Luke was brushing a reed on Rey's hand and was all like "it's the force, you can feel it ooooh" Honestly it was good humor, I laughed when Luke threw the lightsaber off the cliff because of how dramatic the Force Awakens ended when Rey reached Luke, it was a funny anticlimax. All in all, I absolutely loved this film. But then again, characters are never that important to me. Even in my own writing, I don't write a plot to serve the characters, I write characters to serve the plot. In my opinion, the plot is metaphysical and can exist outside of the characters. They give it spice. You can have a film that has every character nameless and originless, and have a great film. A good example is Under the Skin with Scarlet Johanssen. Great movies with very simple plots that work...because of the characters
J2112YYZ
It was ok for me. JJ Abrhams did a better job at doing the been there done that themes of the original and made a much better and enjoyable film out of it. This film had some good moments and some funny ones. But overall it's just the same plot of the original trilogy with some different characters and slightly different setting.
