A Farewell To Kings 40th Anniversary Box Set

Got this (3CD version) yesterday but I'm doing my "A Farewell To Kings" today so I'll listen to it the deluxe edition a bit later. Probably haven't listened to the studio album in almost a year. so this will be a cool immersion experience. (Can't say I've been blown away by the sonics, but I'm still on the 97 remaster after first pulling out the original (not doing vinyl due to time constraints although those would probably sound better in this particular case.) I can compare which CD sounds better while I'm at this.

I know I trashed the art previously (and still don't like the art on the front cover, the Closer To The Heart single or the Cygnus EP) but the rest of it inside is really tasteful I think. There is also a picture of the original cover so the context isn't completely cut like it was last year with 2112. Really nice essay too, although I thought too many words were spent on the bands that covered the songs. I'm sure I'm going to like the Dream Theater cover as they are a favorite band, but I don't like the idea have having other bands cover the songs in principle. Stuff like that just dilutes the original work when it's included in the original package.

Just happened to notice that Xanadu from Hammersmith Odeon February 1978 on the AFTK 40th anniversary release is noticeably different as compared to Different Stages, right at the beginning when the drums start. We now know that Neil made a drumming flub there, and apparently back when Different Stages was released, they (maybe Geddy and/or Paul Northfield) felt it necessary to hide the mistake by overdubbing the 2nd bar onto the 1st. :)

how is it

As I'm working this weekend, I won't have time to give the platters a spin but I just unboxed the whole thing. I wanted to confirm I had all the parts and the proper 4 vinyls records. I read last night on the Steve Hoffman forums that some people were getting 2 record 1's and missing one of the other one's or some other combination of missing/duplicate records. Fortunately I have all the proper discs and other stuff.

Visual/tactile/construction stand point. I like it. The box is well constructed, the front artwork is printed on the box not a paper insert, the back is a printed sheet but adhered to the box. Inside there's a black velvety lining. The 2 lithograph style inserts a fine, I wonder if the 1 that has the puppet king on it was an early idea for the cover. Essentially it's the same but with a few more ruins in the background. The turntable mat is OK I guess, not sure if I will use it. The gatefold fold out holding the 4 vinyl records is nice heavy constructed and houses each record in it's own sleeve I guess is the word, as in they don't jam 2 records into one fold of the gatefold ala Archives. There's nice photos on the inside gatefolds, some are familiar pics others I've never seen before. The tour book is nice glossy heavy weight stock and what I assume is an exact replica in its' contents. . The 12" x 12" book is again, quality construction with a lengthy writeup. Don't know who wrote the "essay" or it's contents but I will read it while playing the blu ray in the near future. The ring on a string is cheapest thing of the box, it's a little lightweight but on the other hand it will stay in its' velvet pouch as I'm not about to adorn myself with Rush jewelry. The set comes with a download code which is convenient.

Look forward to having some time to dive in.

I got the 3CD set, and it'll be there when I get back to work on Monday

For now, 2112 from Hammersmith was released on youtube yesterday ..

I love it, warts and all ... it takes Geddy a few verses to get his vocals under control, but as we get to the 2nd half of Temples and into Discovery, he starts nailing it ..

I also love Alex's bit from Close Encounters Of The Third Kind

As great as Neil was/is, he had issues keeping time in the early days ... but that only adds to the magic for me

Pre-PWaves, Neil would lag or rush, and Ged could be pitchy. But they were doing so many shows...

Looks like the 3 disc version is coming tomorrow. My "anniversary editions" albums are restricted to

1.Tull

2 Beatles

3 Rush

The main problem with all this fantastic stuff being put out is that I am perfectly happy with two speakers. My bluray is not even plugged in as we do not watch much DVD movies or concerts anymore.

I'll be listening to these two, Kings and 2112 only at Christmas as we are a bit frugal these days and that was the extent of splurging this December.

Oh I did give a Honda 2012 low miles car to my daughter but only to help her out at new job and she got married. He husband is underemployed and she has the better job at the start of her marriage (at age 22). Did not want to put money pressures on them in this trumpian era.

Overall, I like both and design and content of this box set. The only bad part is how much space it takes up in the album rack! I sure am glad I preordered at Amazon. I got it for $97.00. On the day of release it went up to $149.00!

Up to 250 shows a year, according to geddy. Yikes.

(Only played Farewell...so far. 2112 for Xmas).

OK, it’s fun to have the extended material except the covers. Somehow progressive bands are unique enough that covers sound strange. Whether it’s Pink Floyd or Rush. I can put up with Roger Waters singing songs that were sung by Gilmour originally. I enjoy both Waters and Gilmour doing their versions. But I had a whole Wall tribute album and it was only so so, no matter how accurate.

With Rush and Geddy’s voice in my head, I just don’t enjoy the covers. Sometimes i don’t enjoy the originals either. But that’s just Rush.

May get the box at some point, but I'm more than happy with the 3CD set for now.

It kind of bothers me that I had to box up some of my original US Atomics to make room for this on the main Rush shelf so I don't have a CD on the shelf with the original cover art, but it's the best sounding Kings CD I have.(Can't exactly pull out the Mobile Fidelity 2112 or the two 2112 deluxe editions because of the live tracks from 1981 Edmonton on one and the alternate Massey Hall tracks on the other.)

I haven’t reconfigured the CD rack yet. Just the LP shelves for the box. My Rush CDs’ use about 30 inches of space in my CD rack so I know where you’re coming from.

I just heard about this today- Solar Federation, a Rush tribute band, in Harrisburg at Appalachian Brewing Co. Abbey Bar 12/16 !! I probably won't be able to go, due to a neighborhood Christmas party, but anyway here is the info!

I've been seeing that. Although, I have mixed feelings about Rush tribute bands, and have pretty much boycotted them... there's a thread on here somewhere with me debating this with someone a few years back...
