What This Strange Device Be...?

Stumbled across this video of "The Most Beautiful Instruments" (which really should be titled "most interesting"), and I thought it would make a good thread starter. The world is full of unusual, yet beautiful instruments, so why not take a look at some of them...

The 10:18 mark was the most interesting to me.

Cool! I'd never seen a Glass Harmonica (4:53) before!

More interesting instruments:

The very first one, the Saregama -- anyone who is really good at texting with their thumbs should have that instrument mastered in about 20 minutes. :)

there's probably an app for that.

pat methany also had some custom instruments developed for him. this is his pikasso guitar.

"Created by luthier Linda Manzer for guitarist Pat Metheny, the instrument took 2 years to build (approximately 1000 hours), and when the 42 strings are strung up to high tension, the Pikasso is under approximately 1000 lbs pressure. It weighs 6.7 kg or 14 3/4 lbs"

On his orchestrian project, he had several instruments developed as part of his 'one man band' where all the other instruments are programmed and triggered. The most beautiful one was a 'bottle organ' which is simply bottles filled with water and an air chamber blowing over the top of the bottles to produce a note. here's a sample:

another sample from the video

the synth thing at about 2:00 is a trip. the bottle organ appears at about 3:20

That Wheelharp at 10:20 is quite a piece of machinery !!

Ingenious design.

re: My original post... Just yesterday I saw a guy in Tempe AZ playing that inverted kettle drum thing that the young lady is playing. He had a custom upright bass that he was playing simultaneously. It was mesmerizing....

ETA: It's called a hangdrum...

I'll see Pat's Pikasso and raise you a Medusa...described here by the designer/builder, Linda Manzer.
