Rest In Peace - Tom Petty Died

Petty never failed to draw big crowds. I remember when he was touring in 2010/2011 he sold out the 20,000 capacity amphitheatre here so fast that they added a second show there the following week. Absolutely insane. When do you hear about anyone doing that in North America in recent years?

Aside from Garth Brooks... :P

Either this past month or in October, he sold out seven days in the arena out here.

Sad commentary on this city.

I bet Tom Petty played once here (if he ever did at all), like Rush, and never again.

:sigh:

Petty played your town in 2002 and 2006. He played the Gorge ten times or so.

The Gorge doesn't surprise me. My town does.

Here's a list of RUSH dates

Man, they played a lot of shows...

I think they played once here. I have the bootleg from the show. The comments being made that I could hear on the bootleg were awful. No wonder why they never came back.

If you check, they played on 75, 76, 77, 78, 80...

...and never came back again.

I keep wondering why Brooks is so despised by you...so I did some research and oh my life he is absolutely massive isn't he?

He is barely a cult concern in the UK. His music is miles away from the mainstream. I am always gobsmacked sometimes how acts huge in the US are nothing over here!

Seriously...country music in general is a very hidden concern here.

We have Adele as our Garth Brooks over here lol I cannot think of anyone close really to that level of stature here

EDIT: here, here, here...I seem to be on commision considering how many times I used that word!

Someone saying they like country music is like saying they like Walmart. It's an indication that they're a mindless simpleton.

Like owning up to loving prog indicates you're a prick?

But, yeah, not after that. The Gorge, Seattle, Portland, Boise or Vancouver BC after that.

Here's a heartfelt tribute to Tom Petty from Ringo Starr.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4hgDdYAUu8

With Tom Petty - Hearbreakers keyboardist Benmont Tench, Petty's spouse Dana York and her son Dylan.

With Ringo Starr - All-Starr Band members Colin Hay, Gary Wright, and drummer Greg Bissonette. I believe I saw bassist Hamish Stuart (of The Average White Band) as well.

Just curious when they played there, and amazed at how many places they did play in those early years. You see those interviews from the PWaves Tour, and how exhausted Ged looks...it makes sense. Then comes the song Limelight...

Here's an interesting comment in a Rolling Stone - 2006 Interview with Tom Petty.

"Often the best interviews are given by the musicians who avoid them the most, like Bruce Springsteen or Eric Clapton. And often one of the reasons they don't like to sit down for an interview is because they are too honest and sincere in these types of interactions, unwilling to go into autopilot and parrot the same answers they've given before. This is true of Petty, who keeps extending the interview well past its appointed deadline."

Lorraine when you have time, check out this thread here, which also features a post from me in regards to Tom Petty.

What sickens me is the fact that these articles insist on saying "massive" overdose as if to absolve the doctors from responsibility ..

When a doctor prescribes medication, you are under their care - they are responsible for the types of drugs and the amounts, and most importantly, the combinations ..

Reading over that list of drugs - with all that shit the doctors prescribed, it wouldn't take a "massive overdose" to kill him ..

That combination right there is enough

It used to be that musicians died of overdoses from things they would buy in seedy apartment buildings or have someone go on a run and buy from some of the most unsavory people ..

Musicians are still dying, but those providing what kills them are now called MDs

I wonder sometimes if the Dr's are too swayed by celebrities to think straight or to say no to them. Fran Drescher (The Nanny :P) and Dana Carvey ( Wayne's World) (not the biggest celebrities but still) had doctors make big mistakes on them because the Dr. was starstruck. Dana Carvey had a surgeon replace the wrong artery in an artery bypass!! :o

It's admirable that he wanted to complete the tour for his fans, but it may have cost him his life. If he postponed to give that hip time to heal, maybe it doesn't get to the point where he feels like he needs that much numbing. He still had the other underlying conditions, but perhaps he at least gets into his 70s. Who knows. Such a shame for his family.

RIP, Tom. You definitely left your mark on this world.

How is this the doctor's fault entirely? A level of personal responsibility must be laid on Tom. People need to research medications instead of just trusting their doctors. It's what happened to my father. He trusted an absolute quack for a doctor to treat his back pain with a shit ton of opiates and he's almost six months sober. The stuff really messes with your mind. It chews you up, spits you out, then throws you in a deep fryer for good measure. My dad now has short term memory issues that he never had, big mood swings, migraines that leave him in bed for two or three days, and his hands occasionally shake. He never would have gotten into the situation if he had done what was first suggested and undergo another back surgery to correct the problem, but he decided it was easier to numb the pain than eliminate it.

It's not always the doctor's fault, sometimes the patient is at fault for not doing their homework and putting blind faith into someone who may only be taking guesses.

This just makes me hate big pharm even more. Between this, Prince And Cornell, enough is enough.

So because three famous people die because of opiate abuse/misuse, NOW enough is enough? This has been a problem in the US for years now, especially in the Midwest. Yeah, it's sad that Prince and Tom Petty came to such unfortunate ends, but what about all the people you never hear about? The people who get heroin interlaced with fentanyl and overdose? What about the epidemic of carfentanil, an elephant tranquilizer, being freely available in the streets and being laced with other drugs to maximize their potency? This is more than a few musicians dying, this is a national crisis.

Knowing Tom Petty was a former/recovering drug addict, Tom Petty, his family, doctors, bandmates, friends, someone, anyone close should have had safe guards in place to prevent this from happening...terribly sad. Not poetic, not rock and roll, just sad.
