J2112YYZ
I just realized that I don't listen to enough Tom Petty.. I decided to give thanks to him and his music today as I cooked dinner by typing 'Tom Petty hits' into youtube and just letting it play.. Man everything this guy did just sounds so good! With most artists I'm selective and tend to avoid the hits but not with Tom Petty. RIP Many artist's hits are popular for being trendy. Tom's hits are popular for being great songs. Exactly. Petty had this unique ability to write great hit songs that everyone liked but also had the song quality depth beyond that to gain the love he did from multiple generations of fans. I went to high school in the mid 90s and most kids that age hate on the old rockers that their parents dig. But Petty was different. He was one of a handful of older musicians that the younger people thought was cool. There was a genuine sincerity and positive feeling to his music that everyone no matter their age loved him.

Lorraine
Peter Wolf wrote about his long time friendship with Tom in Rolling Stone recentlyhere. Thank you for posting the link. I especially liked this part (still haven't found out how he cracked his hip though): More recently Tom was having hip trouble and in a lot of pain backstage during this summers' tour. He was driven to the performance area in a golf cart and slowly climbed the steps to the stage every night. But what was amazing... once he put on his guitar it seemed like it was a magic wand, taking away every ailment and pain that he was having... and night after night he kept the musical bar high. That's what I admired about Tom; he worked very hard at everything he did and always with a deep passion and a great sense of dignity. He certainly carved his own way and always stayed one of the good guys!

RushFanForever
Peter Wolf wrote about his long time friendship with Tom in Rolling Stone recently here. Thank you for posting the link. I especially liked this part (still haven't found out how he cracked his hip though): This article from Rolling Stone here may help with the above: Very few people beyond the Heartbreakers' immediate circle knew that Petty was suffering, at each gig, from a hairline fracture in his left hip, which he planned to deal with after the tour. "I don't know how it happened," says his longtime manager Tony Dimitriades. "I don't think he even knew when it happened." At one point, Dimitriades told Petty, "You can't tour like that." The singer responded, "Why not? I'll do it in a chair if I have to." Edited November 7, 2017 by RushFanForever

ALifeson85
I JUST saw Tom Petty in concert in Baltimore, 2 months before he passed. It was my first and only time seeing him in concert - and I'm so glad that I decided to go (on a WHIM, no less.). The show was incredible, and I definitely would have seen him again if ever came back around. Here's some photos a got from the show. I have more on my FB page.

J2112YYZ
Petty never failed to draw big crowds. I remember when he was touring in 2010/2011 he sold out the 20,000 capacity amphitheatre here so fast that they added a second show there the following week. Absolutely insane. When do you hear about anyone doing that in North America in recent years?

I'm still looking on the internet for something about the results of his toxicology tests. They must have them by now.
Lorraine
A good interview - Tom and Gary Shandling - Very funny http://youtu.be/-3AGlBYyLjo It's not really an interview. More like two friends just kabbitzing back and forth. Edited November 25, 2017 by Lorraine

Sad commentary on this city. I bet Tom Petty played once here (if he ever did at all), like Rush, and never again. :sigh: Edited December 1, 2017 by Lorraine

He is barely a cult concern in the UK. His music is miles away from the mainstream. I am always gobsmacked sometimes how acts huge in the US are nothing over here! Seriously...country music in general is a very hidden concern here. We have Adele as our Garth Brooks over here lol I cannot think of anyone close really to that level of stature here EDIT: here, here, here...I seem to be on commision considering how many times I used that word!
