Like Arrival, directed by Denis Velleneuve. Another success (though not at the box office unfortunately; no accounting for taste). I didn't think it perfect but I thought it beautiful. I hope he returns to sci-fi from time to time.

599) Crumb (1994)

 

I saw this a long time ago(late 90's). It was a very good documentary about american cartoonist Robert( R )Crumb. Some of his most well known art includes the "Cheap Thrills" album cover by Big Brother and the HOlding CO(Janis Joplin's old band), Fritz the Cat, Keep on Trucking and Zap comix. To be honest I don't remember much about this film(having only seen it once) but I remember thinking it was well done(as well as entertaining).

This list is alive ... and after watching The Housemaid for the first time, I realize that there are many many more movie that I have yet to see that could land here ..

 

Again, 1960 .. Quite possibly the greatest year for horror ( ? )

 

The Housemaid is considered by some to be the greatest Korean film of all time ... Having now seen it, I can understand why ... And as is the case with most all my favorite horror films, the element of sadness is abundant .... brilliant film, and fascinating to me because it taps into an aspect of culture that is not there in films from English speaking countries ..... As far as the best of 1960, The Housemaid is right there ...

I was never much of a Val Kilmer fan before this, having found his characters in Real Genius and Top Gun really annoying back in the day, but this movie flipped those feelings and made me somewhat of a fan. Fun movie and cool '90s soundtrack, especially the theme song by Orbital and 6 Underground by the Sneaker Pimps.

I've been meaning to add this to the list pretty much since I first started posting titles to it. I guess maybe what prevented me was what others might think of it but to heck with that. A long time ago some hipster moron even made fun of me for liking it. I admit that on the surface it might seem like another teen movie but there's really something pretty deep going on and I think what this movie has to say is pretty important. There really aren't that many movies I can think of off the top of my head about alienation and isolation but this is one of them. A big part of it is sort of like the Rush song "subdivisions" on the big screen. People talk about the Breakfast Club but in my opinion this one is just as good(if not then it's pretty close). Maybe a little bit of a guilty pleasure but to be honest I really don't feel that guilty for liking it and it reminds me of my struggles of fitting and being heard and taken seriously when I was younger. Can't believe I haven't listed these yet. Like the Terrence Malick film Badlands, the Oliver Stone effort is based on the exploits of Charlie Starkweather and Caril Ann Fugate, although much more loosely. Stone was highly criticized for his approach to the film, which some took as glorifying the violence it parodies. Malick's Badlands features a brilliant performance by Martin Sheen as the Starkweather character.

Didn't do well in theaters but has developed a following, for good reason. Fantastic cast and hilarious lines throughout. You've got to love a superhero movie featuring a character named "The Shoveler" (played by WIlliam H. Macy) whose "super power" is that he's a really fast shoveler. And then there's Hank Azaria's "Blue Raja" who aspires to throw kitchen utensils with deadly accuracy, but he doesn't use knives because they are too dangerous. And so on and on. And Geoffrey Rush's Casanova Frankenstein might be my favorite movie villain, maybe just after Alan Rickman's turn in Die Hard (Hans Gruber).

I loved this movie. Had a bit of a crush on Gong Li. I'd put her, in this movie, up there with Selma Hayek in from Dusk 'til Dawn (of course the energy is different -- demure beauty vs murderous yet seductive vampiress). Sticking with demure beauty, I have fond memories of Yoko Shimada in the Shogun miniseries too.

611- Titanic (1997). The Abyss reminded me that we've been remiss... in picking this other watery James Cameron flick. Solid cast and storytelling.

^ It's maybe not cool to admit one loved Titanic, but I grew up fascinated by Titanic lore, having as a kid first read Clive Cussler's Raise the Titanic and then Walter Lord's seminal A Night to Remember (saw the movies as well of course), followed by whatever else I could get my hands on. Also, I was a Marine Engineer in college, which is basically mechanical engineering with an emphasis on energy conversion, especially as it applies to sea-going powerplants. In short, I've always loved ships (along with planes, trains and automobiles), but especially the Titanic. When Cameron's movie came out I saw it on an enormous screen in Washington D.C. (The Uptown, or AMC Lowes Uptown these days, a single screen theater known as THE place to see the biggest movie in town). Same place I first saw the original Star Wars. Best way to see a movie. When I saw Titanic on a smaller screen a few months later the experience was not the same. Anyway, I loved Cameron's treatment. However hokey some of the dialogue, he really made one feel the tragedy. Arguably, one can simply tune out the dialogue and plot and enjoy the beauty of the movie. Kurt Russell and lots of gorgeous actresses round out the cast in this sexploitation/revenge story. Robert Rodriguez' movie deals with zombies and a group of people thrown together to fight 'em off. Starring Matthew Mcconoughey(see Contact also for him).Really great epic Sci Fi movie from a few years ago. There's a certain A list actor who almost ruined the film by being in it for about 20 minutes( a section which seemed pretty irrelevant to the rest of the movie imo). Take that out and the film is pretty much perfect. One of the best in the genre from the last few years.
