Gimme a break.

Rush could've played with no explosions and the performances would've still been awesome.

Despite some good tunes, Kiss has always needed the comic book theatrics.

Kiss pulled me in when I was 10-11 years old. The comic book theatrics were a big part of the appeal. And Kiss has never denied it. I still look back on that appeal with nostalgia and adoration. And the songs are good, maybe not groundbreaking or innovative, but good. Hooks, riffs, solos, melodies. Kiss has all that plus the theatrics. It's what Kiss is and never denied being.

I've only had two favorite bands in my life. Kiss was first. Soon after was Rush. I know all that about Kiss and how they never denied it.

But the way Lucas is stating it in this thread is as if Rush should be penalized for not being more like Kiss.

Not at all .. I love Rush because they are Rush .... I love KISS because they are KISS

I think what can be agreed on is that both bands made their mark, on their own terms, doing their it own way

More power to 'em

The one thing I would disagree with is that KISS didn't have the songs that would have made them without the theatrics ... They may not have had the chops, and in a way, I think their image worked against as far as being recognized as great songsmiths ... Hard Luck Woman, Tears Are Falling, Detroit Rock City, I Was Made For Loving You, Black Diamond - that's Paul Stanley writing some top notch, very diverse material

Is it in Beyond The Lighted Stage, or in the Rush book Contents Under Pressure? I can't remember exactly, but Alex talks about Paul and Gene writing wonderful songs and sadly showing them to Rush because they know they can't use them as Kiss songs; too different from what their fans expected. It made me wonder about what kind of things they had written over the years that never got heard.

I always argue for Kiss by pointing out the variety in their repertoire. Not many bands can switch from hard rock to metal to glam to pop to country to disco as easily as Kiss did. There are only a handful of bands that do it convincingly.

It’s not really fair. Two studio albums, but one is really a greatest hits package covering 3 albums. :)

I’m still taking WYWH though.

Here's the King Biscuit live soundboard recording that eventually made it onto Alive!

The notion that Alive! was a studio recording is total bullshit

This soundboard actually sounds better, as the fake audience noise that was put in Alive doesn't distract

Kiss Alive made much more of an impression on me at the time. I played it non-stop. Saw them tour shortly after and back then they were a great rock act. What a show! I am not a huge Kiss fan other than in the mid to late 70's. They became a parody of themselves after that time period.

Do I need to post the King Biscuit thing again ??

As a KISS fanatic, I am very familiar with the stories .. That soundboard recording is all someone needs to hear - KISS was incredible live

At that point in their career, they had not been paid any royalties for the first three albums - their sole income was the allowance for touring ... They were poor .. Their road crew consisted of four friends, and when the band was recording, the lighted KISS logo was stored in Paul Stanley's parent's garage ..

Equipment failed on stage .. Mike stands would flop because they were borrowed ..

Overdubs are common for live albums ..

When all is said and done, KISS gives everything they have live and Pink Floyd wanted to build a wall onstage so they wouldn't have to be bothered by the audience ..

rock and roll

We’re talking about two different things. You’re talking about why you love Kiss. I’m talking about how it’s members and manager acknowledge that quite a bit of Alive was redone in the studio. The article even mentions that Kiss did it when overdubs weren’t common.

Incidentally, Lucas, if you love Kiss, and the Alive album, I'm not knocking that. I love Live Evil, but I realize Sabbath obviously has tinkered with the sound. I love Right Here, Right Now, but Sammy Hagar has said that the whole album has basically been rerecorded.

RNB, I understand the criticisms of Alive when everyone involved has acknowledged that parts were tweaked, and even flat out rerecorded ..

The one thing that does bother me is when KISS detractors use that as a way of saying that the band was not good live, and because of some notion that KISS could barely play their instruments they needed to re-do they entire album ...

That simply isn't true and is why I posted the soundboard recording ( which is obviously live and not tweaked )

On a somewhat related note, this is from the liner notes to the remastered edition of UFO's iconic live album "Strangers In The Night" :

There was, however, some sleight of hand involved, although ( producer ) Ron Nevison stresses this was born out of necessity.. "Once we decided to go with a double album, we realized that we were a couple of songs short" .. In the first week of November 1978, the band convened at the Record Plant to record two tracks from scratch: "Mother Mary" and "This Kid's", neither of which were played on the tour.. "I mixed them with crowd noise" Nevison says, "and I remember being proud of the fact that you couldn't tell which songs were live and which one were not" .. A similar trick had been played on Thin Lizzy's "Live And Dangerous": the song "Southbound" was recorded at a soundcheck and later overdubbed with crowd ambience"

So, if overdubs and tweaking were not the norm for a live album prior to Alive!, then this is yet another way that KISS changed the industry
