575) Gargoyles (1972) ( Rutlefan )

576) Don't Be Afraid of the Dark (1973) ( Rutlefan )

Two classic made-for-tv horror flicks. Freaked me out as a kid. In those days before VHS or DVD, kids would tell and retell these movies on "sleepovers," making them grow scarier in the retelling. Goose covered Trilogy of Terror; thought I'd cover these.

Gargoyles had one of the greatest first 20 minutes to a movie ever !!!

577-- Birdman Of Alcatraz (1962). John Frankenheimer directs this biographical film of Robert Stroud (Burt Lancaster) who keeps birds in prison and becomes a leading expert on them. Lots of great supporting work from Karl Malden, Thelma Ritter, Telly Savalas, Edmond O'Brien and Neville Brand. Totally forgot about this one. Edited by Rushian King

578) Hopscotch ( Rutlefan )

Really fun 1980 comedy with Walter Matthau playing a just-retired CIA agent on the run from his recently-spurned, blustery and incompetent CIA ex-boss, played by Ned Beatty, trying to protect certain CIA secrets that Matthau is intent to expose. Very funny movie made at a time when it was fashionable to see the CIA as a keystone cops operation I guess, and one was naturally expected to root for the military-industrial complex whisteblowers (even more so than today). A lighthearted precursor to the Bourne movies, in a sense. Despite his shlubbish exterior and laid-back demeanor, Matthau's character is a very sharp operator.

Watching HBO as a kid there were certain movies I'd watch over and over because there was just something about them I loved. This was one of them. Walter Matthau and Ned Beatty... how can it miss?

579) Black Christmas ( Lucas )

ok, getting into the holiday spirit ... Black Christmas was great when I first saw it back on VHS - it was dreary, scary and having been released in 1974, predated the horror wave that was to come nearly a decade later ..

I probably would have put it on here long ago if so much time hadn't passed since I have seen it ... I just got the blu ray, so I will catch up this week .....

Actually, I went on a blu ray buying spree recently, and hopefully some of the first timers I watch in the coming weeks will land here ..

Getting back to Black Christmas, I remember how unsettled I felt after seeing it ... Bob Clark went on to direct Porky's but there was nothing funny about Black Christmas ... Margot Kidder, Keir Dullea, Olivia Hussey and the very underrated John Saxon ..

It might even be accurate to say "No Black Christams, no Halloween" .... highly influential and dark film

I'm glad to see some of you are doing scary or horror movies since Halloween is coming up soon. ;)

Here's one I find hard to believe is not on the list...

580) The Fog ( Rutlefan )

1980 Carpenter classic featuring the first ladies of B-horror, Adrienne Barbeau and Jamie Lee Curtis. Revenge-seeking leprous ghosts enveloped in a supernatural fog. Awesome.

581-- Jeepers Creepers (2001)/ Jeepers Creepers 2 (2003). In the first part Justin Long and Gina Philips play siblings being hunted by a hungry creature. With a whole new cast the second film is set a few days after the first. Decent horrors. Haven't seen the recently released third part.

582) 28 Days Later (2002)

I actually own this one. I haven't seen many zombie movies but this one is really great. Not super scarey to me but a great film nonetheless and one that seems to owe more to the old style of horror movies than keeping up with modern gimmicks and cliches. A real good one to watch this time of year.

584) Halloween III: Season Of The Witch ( Lucas )

One of the most bizarre "sequels" ever made, with absolutely no connection to the Halloween movies that preceded it or followed .. There is really no way to describe this film - a one of a kind mess that seems to get better with age ... The soundtrack alone is incredible, and just when you start to get accustom to the off the wall plot, this movie will toss in some genuinely creepy scene that works so well because it really shouldn't ..

586-- Saboteur (1942). My last Hitchcock pick for now. Robert Cummings plays a man wrongly wanted for setting a fire that kills his friend at the factory they work at. As usual in a Hitckcock thriller he has to prove his own innocence. Otto Kruger plays the baddie. Before there was the iconic scene in North By Northwest set on Mount Rushmore there was the much lesser known scene in this film set on the Statue Of Liberty.

587) Eyes Without A Face ( 1960 )( Lucas )

Had I seen this movie earlier, it would have made the Top 500 .. Eyes is one that I had heard about for a long long time and finally saw for the first time just recently .. Haunting, disturbing and definitely groundbreaking and influential ..

1960 was a turning point for horror ... I actually have another 1960 supposed classic all linedup for this weekend for a first time viewing .. But of the 1960 horror films on this list - Psycho, Peeping Tom and Eyes Without A Face - these three films changed the course of horror forever, and for the better

495. Babes In Toyland/March of the Wooden Soldiers (goose)

A Laurel and Hardy classic, it's set in the World of Mother Goose. I remember being fascinated with it in the same way I was with Wizard of Oz. Good fun!

I love this choice !!!

A holiday favorite when I was a kid, and to this day, still a favorite

This movie is a wild ride. It's so bizarre. That monkey mouse creature always put a smile on my face. Crazy stuff. I'm embarrassed I didn't think of this movie.

588) Into the Wild (goose)

This is one of those movies I can watch it over and over. The compelling true story of a young man that gives everything away to live on the road as Alexander Supertramp. Circumstances and naivete lead to his demise, but the in two years leading up to his death he lives more than most people in the Western World likely do their whole lives.

Great soundtrack, too.

590) Cabaret (1972)

I'm kind of surprised this one hasn't been mentioned yet. It stars Liza Minelli and takes place in Berlin in the early 30's during the rise of the Nazi party. I only saw it once but it's a great film. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cabaret_(1972_film)

591-- Citizen X (1995). Solid entry in the biographical serial killer genre based on the late Soviet-era predator. Western stars play the main parts in this HBO film. Jeffrey DeMunn (Dale from the Walking Dead) is the killer, along with Stephen Rea, Donald Sutherland and Max von Sydow.

592-- The Magnificent Ambersons (1942). Orson Welles' second film is almost as great as Citizen Kane, despite major edits by the studio and having it's ending changed from somber to happy without the director's approval. Edited by Rushian King

593) Prometheus ( Rutlefan )

The movie many love to hate. There are many things about the movie that could have been done so much better IMHO, but neverthess, I still love it for what is good about it. The opening scene, from the title sequence flying over an Icelandic landscape (IIRC) through the alien's self-sacrifice is wonderful. If Ridley had stayed with that majestic, poetic tenor throughout the movie, instead of prominently featuring some idiotic characters and plot twists, he might have made a classic. As it is, I can overlook the bad and and enjoy the good, and I think there's a lot of good. Also, the deleted scenes fill in some of the plot holes. I don't mind plot holes though; in real life we don't grasp everything; why would we expect a coherent narrative based on a 2,000 year-old archaeological find on an alien planetoid where everything is understood and explained after about 1/2 a day of investigation? It's the stupid characters, stupid decisions, and occasionally pointless implausibility -- e.g., alien ship falls from sky after gaining 3,000 ft of altitude and just happens to land just so, rolling over what's her face, who proves to be just slightly more nimble than the guy in Austin Powers who's run over by the slow-moving steam roller -- which I agree is somewhat confounding. Regardless, visually the movie rocks, and the soundtrack is beautiful at times.

594) Austin Powers ( Rutlefan )

A classic! Hard to believe it almost made it to 600s. Favorite scene was deleted, oddly enough, that being the Fendi briefcase scene:
