I've never thought Iron Maiden were a good band.

Although I think you're wrong, I can definitely understand why you wouldn't like them...even their most ardent fan can't disagree with the fact that they have a very formulaic approach to their music, and many songs have very similar chord structures...It's one of the reasons why I think their best work is contained in the first few albums, as it wasn't so obvious then that they were performing a rehearsed script.

I only came around to Maiden after listening to The Number Of The Beast with my dad and him sharing his affection and memories of songs like 22 Acacia Avenue and The Prisoner with me. Before that I thought they weren't bad, but were too formulaic and their singer was a little lacking somehow.

It's easy to get dissuaded by the hype, or to hear them and not think they're anything special. I honestly think you not only have to dig deeper into their music to understand why they're so loved, but you also have to make a real effort to see things from a fan's perspective, to try and figure out what it is people love about them and what attracted people to them in the first place.

If you can find that, I feel like it will generally hook you as well.

^^^^This. For all the noise and bombast, their material sounds redundant. That's why I'm not a huge fan of bands like Maiden, Priest, Metallica, etc.

I don't see Priest and Maiden as anything alike despite the tendency by people to lump them in together in discussions like these.

I agree...the only slight overlap is that they both feature dualling guitars, but aside from that they are quite different...Priests earlier albums in particular are more like a stylish hard rock rather than out and out metal.

To say they’re not a good band is a bit silly. If you don’t like them that’s fine but I think we have to admit that no band can not be good and accomplish what they have. They are tight and have technical prowess. They are in tune and their singer can control his pitch. What exactly are you looking at when you say they’re not good?

Never really got into them until about 10 years ago when the guitarist in my band gave me a CD of their stuff. Too repetitive for me but I can certainly see why people like them.

Maiden is influential. I love them personally, but I get that after Seventh Son they got formulaic. Like em or not, they do deserve their influential praise

UP THE IRONS!!!!

Acquired taste man. Music like Rush, Maiden, Yes, Floyd etc all an acquired taste.

You don't have to like it.

Agreed but saying you don’t like them is completely different than saying they’re not a good band.

Wait. Before Number of the Beast they were formulaic, but not after? :eh:
