I voted for Van Halen, and I think that's the "right" vote. However, difficult to argue with Hendrix winning.

This is my thought exactly

I voted for Stevie Ray, and I could have as easily voted for Eddie or Hendrix .... Steve Howe was tempting

But there's no arguing Hendrix

.. a viewer of this video posted this comment - incredible:

I was in the support band to The Jimi Hendrix Experience in 1967. I am now almost 74 and remember it like it was yesterday. He was in the next dressing room and came over as a shy, polite gentleman . . . . but when he went on stage . . . OMG, he transformed into a wild master of the guitar. it will haunt me for rest of my life. Thank God I lived through these times!

I didn’t look at the other votes before I voted Hendrix, just now. In many ways, he is the only logical choice, I feel. No one else revolutionized the instrument the way he did.

Jimi and SRV phenomenal talents no doubt. I think the real difference was that Jimi truely transformed the guitar whereas SRV pretty much stuck to blues with a touch of jazzer. Had Jimi lived I think he would have ventured into a more experimental area or perhaps jazz. Maybe he would have become like the Miles Davis of guitar. I never sensed that SRV was venturing outside of the blues area.

So I think I'm talking myself into a Jimi vote. I think his material was more adventurous than SRV.

Fair enough. But for all of Eddie's chops, the last 30 years sounded pretty much like the first 10 years. I think with the substance abuse, he also got creatively lazy. When people think Van Halen, they think of the first 10 years and that's it. Edited by HemiBeers

Page created more classic riffs than any of the others. The dude was a riffmaster!

True, but Tony Iommi is the ultimate riff master. And yes, I'm the one who voted for him.

Agreed. When it comes to guitar riffs Tony easily beats Page and any other guitarist.

That's true, although he has largely been inactive with respect to new releases for about 20 years (other than releasing a number of old tunes 10 years ago with Roth).

But from 1978 to 1984 he did more to revolutionize the electric guitar than anyone, and I'd include Hendrix there. The 1980s are basically defined by him and a bunch of his imitators. As I've said a few times, there's a difference between playing Eruption, which a lot of people can do, and creating it, which one man did. And listen to the entire Fair Warning album. So many incredible moments, from the intro to Mean Street to the monster run at the beginning of Dirty Movies to the mood created by the intro to Hear About it Later to the main riff of Unchained.

As polarizing and subjective as a topic like this can be, I can't say I disagree with any of the comments here or the reasoning behind preferring one guy ..

that statement is keeping everything very...switzerland. :P

I've probably told this before, but I was 10 or 11 years old ( early 1978 ) and the family was riding in the car .. I always made sure to ride shotgun next to my Dad so I could play with the radio ..

So the DJ talks about this new band, and proceeds to play You Really Got Me ... as a kid who was starting out on guitar, I was blown away ... Now keep in mind, my Dad played guitar and we had music in the house all the time - I was not naïve when it came to music ... and my Dad was unsure if what we just had heard was all guitar ..

So before we get home, we stopped at Two Guys department store .. It was the Target of the 70s, and where I got some of my albums or 8 tracks ... We find this new band's album, and we bought the 8 track version, as I had just got a stereo in my room with an 8 track player ..

So we get home, and I get to song number two - Eruption .... I am frozen in disbelief at what I am hearing - but before it even ends, I pull the 8 track out fearing that the spools of tape are spilling out - and worried that there is something wrong with the tape, as it was speeding up and slowing down as if the tape itself was possessed ..

I tell my Dad that we need to return the 8 track, and explain why ..

An hour or so later, we're back at home with the LP

When I get to song number two again - the same thing ... I call my Dad in to listen, and my Dad - a guitarist who had played professionally at one point and idolized Les Paul - sat there with me in complete disbelief ..

Remembering back to that, I am contemplating changing my vote here

I saw him perform that one live...as well as Third Stone from the Sun, at the same show. Phenomenal.

I like that he snuck in the chorus of 'power of soul' at about 5:12.

Hendrix was great, but i just don't get the GOAT vibe from his playing.

Really? Cuz from my perspective the only vibe Jimi ever gives off is the "GOAT" one, whether or not I actually like him the best.
