So in honor of Halloween, I've been listening to a lot if Sabbath, and I've come to the conclusion that Sabbath, Bloody Sabbath is easily my favorite of their records, even knowing the overall greatness of Paranoid, the spook factor of the debut, the darkness of MoR, the rejuvenation of Heaven And Hell, and the rejuvenated spook and darkness of Mob Rules...SBS just outranks them all on a songwriting, consistency, musical ingenuity, lyrical insight, and overall replayableness scale for me. So in honor of its oft overlooked greatness, what are you're thoughts on this wonderful metal classic? What's your favorite track? What's your LEAST favorite track (don't just say Fluff cuz it's a pretty acoustic interlude)? Why do you love/hate this album?

And as always, have fun! :)

My fav is A National Acrobat. That riff is perfect, and it rises and falls so well. It's a perfect metal song.

My least fav is probably Who Are You. The synth tone just didn't really age very well. It's still a fine song, but it's a little corny by today's standards.

Love the album. My favorite from them along with Master Of Reality.

The title track is my favorite on it and is a top five metal song of all time for me. To me that song is just perfect in every way. National Acrobat, Killing Yourself To Live and Spiral Architect are all great as well. The band was just on fire with everything on this album.

Hard to argue with any of that! :)

I love the little acoustic intro to spiral architect, it's so mysterious and haunting, but then it breaks into the brighter groove and you know you're in for a treat!

I love all these songs but my favourite is still the title track. I don't think there's a bad track on here either. What I have after Sabbath Bloody Sabbath are a few songs in second place and a few songs in 3rd place. There's no last place on this album.

That's so true.

I'm listening right now ... Ozzy era Sabbath is something I want to get more familiar with ..

Is this the first Sabbath album that had synths ?? - I love them in these songs ....

Fluff into Sabbra Cadabra is great - I love it .. I think this is the best as far as Ozzy's vocals - he usually grates on me after a few songs, but I am really enjoying this

As others have said (rightly, I might add) this is a masterpiece. I think Sabotage is a bit of a drop off, but the debut through this album are pretty much flawless.

Yes indeed. Vol. 4 doesn't get enough love imo. Supernaut baby!

That one COULD be the best one. Other than FX, no down moments.

The (first) Ozzy era albums really started with an amazing run.

No Master of Reality was the first one with synths. Iommi played synth on After Forever.

Respectfully disagree with both these posts. Sabotage is their best album.

And out of the first 6 albums, it is Vol 4 that is flawed. Subpar production and out of tune guitars.

There's a reason for that:

In his autobiography I Am Ozzy, singer Ozzy Osbourne speaks at length about the drugged out atmosphere surrounding the sessions, stating, "In spite of all the arsing around, musically those few weeks in Bel Air were the strongest we'd ever been" but admitted "Eventually we started to wonder where the f**k all the coke was coming from ... I'm telling you: that coke was the whitest, purest, strongest stuff you could ever imagine. One sniff, and you were king of the universe." Osbourne also recounts the band's ongoing anxiety over the possibility of being busted, which only worsened after they went to the cinema to see The French Connection (1971), a William Friedkin film about two undercover New York City cops busting an international heroin-smuggling ring. "By the time the credits rolled," Osbourne recalled, "I was hyperventilating." Iommi describes the scene in his memoir Iron Man: My Journey Through Heaven & Hell with Black Sabbath, "like Tony Montana in the movie Scarface: we'd put a big pile (of cocaine) on the table, carve it all up and then we'd all have a bit, well, quite a lot." In 2013, Butler admitted to Mojo magazine that heroin, too, had entered the picture: "We sniffed it, we never shot up ... I didn't realize how nuts things had gotten until I went home and the girl I was with didn't recognize me."
