The Rick Grimes who bit the guys throat out on the highway, or who stood in a boxcar and said "They don't know who they are f***ing with!" would never have put himself or his people in the position that landed them on their knees at Negan's feet. He and everyone around him turned stupid overnight.

Actually he said 'screwing.' I still don't understand in a show as violent as TWD how AMC didn't allow the more appropriate 'fvcking' in that instance. It was only once Negan's character (who supposedly swears a lot in the comics) appeared did the show start allowing words such as sh!t. Not sure if fvck has been used in TWD yet but it was used in the season finale of FearTWD. That same night, Star Trek Discovery also used fvck.

On the DVD version he says "f***ing". They filmed it both ways and decided not to drop the F bomb for some reason. I agree, what's the point of censoring language on a show like this? I don't get it.

Didn't know that. Retrospectively it was still an odd decision by AMC to not allow it as it had already been used for a Breaking Bad episode previously.

A major problem with the season 8 premier (among many problems): Rick has said a couple of times that he was going to kill Negan. Then the scene was setup with Negan sauntering out unprotected in full view with a few of his lieutenants and turncoats Gregory and Eugene. Nothing was killed except all the glass windows on that side of the building. For a group that didn't have any bullets a couple episodes back Rick's crew sure wasted a lot without hitting anyone. they needlessly and pointlessly killed off Abraham and Glenn

Killing off Glenn was just following what Negan did what he first showed up in the comic. While Abraham was already dead at that point in the comic, his death on the show was not needed. However killing a main character who is loved by the fans like Glenn was absolutely necessary to establish Negan as an evil bastard and show why he was able to gain the power he did and get so many people to work for him. Killing some random secondary character would have had no impact.

I don't care. Apparently comics fans differ from you average Mom and Pop TV watcher if comic sales didn't suffer for that. People emotionally invest in TV show characters they like. To just have them killed off for nothing more than shock value is horrible. We want to have hope for these characters, that they are going to make it through this plague. To take a nihilistic "bad guy shows up and kills whomever he wants randomly" approach is to expect folks to switch channels. Simply put, the show went too far and now they're paying for it. If you're willing to put up with that and keep watching anyway then hey: whatever floats your goat, enjoy the show.

Oh, i'm not watching anymore but it had nothing to do with what they did there. It was how last season turned out to be so boring and really went nowhere by the end. I don't think Glenn and Abe being alive would have changed the quality that much. They had a big chance to really change things up on the show with Negan and the saviors but it just turned out to be another dragged out, not really going anywhere season with very little payoff by the end of it. Just like the last couple seasons have been.

Now, if I hear good things about this season I will check it out. But I have zero interest in it unless the season gets glowing reviews.

If you both could've done season 7, what would you have done differently? Let's say we're at that season 6 cliffhanger. Take it from there.

I think the problem with the show started way before the season 6 cliffhanger.

It's like the characters forgot everything they have learned from the start of this thing and began making really dumb decisions. I watched this years season premier and that has not changed. In the end it boils down to poor writing.

The Rick Grimes who bit the guys throat out on the highway, or who stood in a boxcar and said "They don't know who they are f***ing with!" would never have put himself or his people in the position that landed them on their knees at Negan's feet. He and everyone around him turned stupid overnight.

And I said a similar thing to my friend who enjoyed season 7. I said that Rick, Michonne, and Darryl were getting their asses whipped by those Claimers until Rick bit the leader's jugular. No way would he be whimpering and all that vs Negan so quickly.

But still, this is just what they should NOT have done. What would you have liked to have seen done?

I don't know. I don't have a creative mind. I only look at things like this in terms of "what would I do" or "what should they do" but then those things probably make for boring television.

It just hard for me to watch characters who are sometimes portrayed as so smart or so tough suddenly flipped to be really weak or really stupid.

I think if you want to put the hero's in a difficult situation that they will have to fight their way out of to create drama, the whole introduction to Negan thing should have been an ambush type of situation initiated by Negan. Something Rick's crew could not see coming. Something Rick's crew didn't start in such a reckless fashion. From there, its easy to have them appear beaten down and then to have them fight back out of it without having looked like idiots for being in the position in the first place. Also, if Rick is destined to end Negan, then the two should never be placed face to face like they have been several times. Negan can't stand out in the open, while the dead bodies of some of his guards who were taken out with sniper fire lay around him. Dumb shit like that.

After this recent premier, its laughable that Negan or Simon are still alive. Why not take them out with the same sharpshooters that took out the guards or with any of the 30-40 assault rifles you had pointing at them and then over run the place with zombies? Oh, and stop using the "overrun the place with zombies" plot line. Its getting old.

Just stupid.

Those morons waste far too much ammo. They are at war and they need to start acting like professionals, raid a store that sells books and/or dvds on tactical training and raid a military base and take all of the manuals about tactics. Take also dummy guns and knives and get to training. You can bet the ranch that's what I'd be doing, training like my life depended on it. Because at that point it would.

You already do those things Jack. And there is no zombie apocalypse! :P

Nah, my complaint isn't that the characters should do those things and aren't. My complaint is Rick is doing things which isn't in his character after all he's been through and has already done. Blubbering like that? Quitting? He might've cried and given up vs an enemy in season 1 or possibly even in 2 when he was inexperienced with murdering and misery. But now (beginning of season 7 that is)?! He had already given up before Abraham was bashed. Rubbish.

Unrelated:

- I thought the show truly was crap at mid-season of season 6 I think it was. A zombie horde had slipped into Alexandria and Rick went outside to hack at them solo. He was soon joined by all of the Alexandria citizens. And there's a closeup shot of each citizen hacking at some zombie with these cheesy looks of anger and determination. Visually, it was extremely, unintentionally B-movie looking.

- I wished they'd kill Carl. He feels like a side character that should be trashed.

- Actually, I haven't even seen most of season 7 but when is baby Judith going to not be a baby? Since Carl has naturally aged, she should too. It's like her first year of infancy has lasted four years! :P

In the JohnnyBlaze Walking Dead series this is who'd die or would already be dead (if one or some of these characters actually died in season 7, don't tell me):

Carl, baby Judith, Rosita, Tara

I only dislike Carl but the other 3 don't do much to serve the overall story IMHO. And when they have had their shining moments, it's not too interesting.

I was good with Sasha being killed off as I didn't like her. But what a shitty way to off her. No pay off whatsoever.

It's very weird to me. If anyone watches American Horror Story on FX, they easily drop 5-10 + F bombs, or MFs.an episode. I really don't get what's up with the language do's and don'ts on these cable shows.

Maybe the language do's and dont's aren't clear cut. Maybe market research survey results on the use of obscene language might influence certain cable shows and programs' writing style. Who the f**k knows? :P

I'm saying the kind of training that you're talking about doesn't have to be drawn out or labored over. It can be done in a 5-7 minute montage. Or over the course of half or less of ONE episode. (Think Rocky movies.)

I'm positive more than 75% of fans don't want to see Carl learn how to fire a gun or tie a knot for half a season

They've had scenes over the years showing characters learning to shoot, cover themselves in walker blood, etc. but then the writers have the characters forget/not do things when it's convenient for the plot. The biggest problem with the show is the lack of consistency with the timeline caused by a seemingly free hand the writers have in doing whatever they want as long it doesn't affect what's supposed to happen in the 4 'important' episodes-- the season/mid-season premiers and mid-season/season finales.

It looks like Rick's big "we've already won" plan for taking the fight to the Saviors is turning into a big muddled mess and once again our "heroes" find themselves in "what do we do now?" mode, which by now sure seems to be the show's default setting. Edited by Jack Aubrey

Show has gone to shit. All downhill since season 6.

Meh. Sticking with it because I am invested in these characters......but this show is ending soon.....very very soon.

The show is not ending anytime soon. Not sure where you're getting that idea from. They still draw great viewer numbers every week (what other cable show can get 10 million viewers an episode?) and rake in a ton in merch. They even have plans for what they want to do in season 10.

I am a big fan and want it to be great again. Like others, I will continue to watch - I have too much time invested. But it boggles my mind that some of the writing is so amateur now! The opening episode where Negan walks out and they don't kill him (their number one objective) and proceed to waste ammo on windows, was just plain STUPID!

Ratings are nosediving and if this is the quality of the storytelling moving forward.....they will lose more and more.

Ratings may be down but it's still one of the most viewed shows on TV and it's not on the big 4 networks so the numbers a channel like AMC needs is even less so it's got a long way to go unless everyone involved decide not to do it anymore.

I wouldn't say the ratings are nosediving but they aren't what they used to be. It will probably take a couple more years of declining ratings before AMC even considers ending it. The show will still be around for at least another two or three seasons. The ratings would have to take record drops in order for them to end the show "soon".

This won't be the first show to stay on the air well past it's shelf life and with lower viewership than previous years.
