NEW YORK (AP) – Robert Guillaume, who won Emmy Awards for his roles on “Soap” and “Benson,” has died at age 89.

Guillaume’s widow Donna Brown Guillaume says the actor and singer died Tuesday morning in Los Angeles. She tells The Associated Press he had been battling prostate cancer. In addition to his television work, Robert Guillaume was the first African-American to sing the title role of “Phantom of the Opera,” appearing with an all-white cast in Los Angeles.

Guillaume rose to stardom after being born into squalid conditions in the slums of St. Louis in November 1927. He was inducted into the St. Louis Walk of Fame in 1999.

He was nominated for a Tony Award in 1977 for his role in the first all-black version of “Guys and Dolls.”

I remember Benson's awesome straight man routine against Katherine Helmund's goofball 'Jessica Tate' on Soap. Their onscreen relationship was SO damn funny and often quite touching. RIP Mr. Guillaume.

This clip doesn't have Benson in it, but it was one of the most hilarious scenes in all of Soap. :laughing guy: :laughing guy:

He had great presence in front of the camera - always excellent no matter what role ... I wish he'd have done more films

RIP Mr Guillaume

I just looked at his filmography. I've only seen him in 4 films with one of those "sightings" in Lion King.

I enjoyed how he shut Morgan Freeman up with his wordage in one particular scene in Lean on Me. Morgan's not usually in that spot but Guillame was just the guy to make it believable.

Soap and Benson were quality of course.

Very good in comedy & drama.

One of the funniest scenes I ever saw on Soap was Benson at a jewish wedding. An old jewish couple walks up to him and asks “Jewish”? and Benson simply answers “No......Shvatsa”.

I pissed my pants. Loved Benson, and loved him more on Soap. Great character.
