  1. 1. Is Rik Emmett in the same league with Alex Lifeson?

    • Yes, hands down.
    • Definitely no!
    • I really don't know.
    • Rik is even better than Lerxst.

Two guys with powerful guitars from Canada.

In your opinion, can Emmett COMPETE with Lifeson?

IMO a band Triumph is not in the same league with Rush, but Emmett IS in the same league with Lerxst. I definitely prefer Lifeson's playing, but as a guitarist and musician Rik can compete with him anytime!

AND THIS IS NOT A QUESTION OF PREFERENCE(I hope you'll know it) !!! :)

Put in an electric in each guy's hands, and it's too close to call. Put an acoustic in each guy's hands, and Rik blows Alex out of the water.

Yeah Just A Game's a really fine album and no doubt Rik can play but please...

Alex is simply the most imaginative artist of his particular instrument there'll ever be. In my view only Brian May can remotely compare. Tony Lommi pretty cool. One or two others very interesting obvs. But it'll never get better than Al.

Damn fine album Just A Game though

Probably not biased at all. Edited by Fordgalaxy

No. Tossing a classical guitar piece on an album full of cheesy arena rock tunes doesn't make one great.

Yeah I was never that much of a Broon's Bane fan, either.

It's like comparing Maryann and Ginger.

I wouldn't kick either out of bed.

....but then again I'm not picky.

Mrs. Howell?

She had her moments. ;)

Wasn't expecting that, right?

Yeah, me neither. I'd only seen her on Gilligan's Island and Brady Bunch

You make Triumph sound like Bon Jovi

They were cheesy in a different way. Here are a few song title examples from triumph..

I live for the weekend

Fool for your love

Hot time ( In this city tonight)

And then we have Petite Etude.. a little acoustic piece from Rick.. I guess he was playing it during his hot time in the city .. tonight

In always got the impression that Rick desperately wanted to be in a more serious band without so much cheese..He was a very accomplished player.

To me it was the drummer (Gil Moore?, forgot his name) who was the more rock oriented guy BUT he sounded cheesier.

But yeah, there were plenty of Rik songs in Triumph that sounded cheesy and should've been on cheesy 80s movie soundtracks. One song is the lyric and accompanying music that goes "somebody's out there, somewhere...waiting for someone to come their way". It's like the song that ends the movie as the main character gets the babe.

But then there are very cool tunes like Lay It On the Line and Fight the Good Fight that more than make up for the cheesy moments.

I love Alex, but he never came close to doing anything like Finger Talkin'

Blinding Light Show kicks ass too

The question here wasn't the integrity of the lyrics or song meaning ... Rik Emmett and Alex are comparable, and chops wise, I'd give the nod to Rik .... Alex was a part of some masterpiece albums, which he obvious had a huge role in creating, but he didn't hold up his end as the guitar hero - more power to him, Alex followed what was in his heart, but we're talking about guitar, and Alex didn;t progress after 1981 ..
