Lorraine
I guess they did an autopsy: http://www.latimes.c...1004-story.html I did not know he had a cracked hip and was taking pain killers. Nor did I know that he had at one time been a heroin addict. I hope that neither contributed to his too early demise. Another edit: I love the comment sections of these articles. I learn a lot. Another person said he was "kind and good of soul." I don't know when and for how long he had a heroin addiction but that certainly could have done some kind of heart damage.I think the person said it was in the nineties. I don't know anything about him other than his music. https://www.earnthenecklace.com/did-tom-petty-do-drugs-heroin-addiction-cocaine/ Edited October 6, 2017 by Lorraine
Lorraine
That LA interview, he says some interesting things. One is that he watched rock commit suicide for money. Another is that success is dangerous to longevity as a band and that, used in the wrong way, it's really destructive. It's hard to be successful and to keep your feet on the ground and to trust people and not get isolated. At about 45:00 he talks about what would happen if one of them suddenly died or had serious health issues. Then he went on to say how grueling this particular tour has been for him. How he got sick and then better and then developed laryngitis. He says the same thing as Geddy - that he sang notes in his twenties that he could never hit today. He thinks his range is and sounds the same, but it sounded to me that there are some he can't quite hit and hold as well as he once did. He said he wanted to take some time off to clear his head. :( He said he had to deal with his cracked hip which may have to be replaced. Not every rocker can do what the Stones do. Unfortunately, not one of them will know if they are one of the unlucky ones until it is too late. As much as Rush fans hate it, they made the right decision. Even if it was Neil's. I'm not surprised though. Most rock stars of his level have more than likely tried things like that or cocaine at some point.

Lorraine
Here's his last show: http://youtu.be/f6PNLIAEl7M He said if he could he would have come down and hugged everyone in that audience. This is so sad. You ought to go listen to the part where he tells the story of how he met Mike Campbell. Entre_Perpetuo
Had a small performance today on campus, just providing some background music for an event. Played Don't Do Me Like That in my lack of preparation and scramble to remember songs. Went over surprisingly well and the song is surprisingly simple. Pretty sure I learned it within like ten minutes earlier in the week. Amazing what genius can be done with a handful of chords and a simple sentiment.
The K Man
Petty has long been one of those artists I liked, but never loved, although Wildflowers is a damn fine record from start to finish (only Petty CD I ever actually bought). Having said that, most of his well known hits are all good songs I can turn on and enjoy. Favorites include You Got Lucky, Don't Come Around Here No More, Don't Do Me Like That, Runnin' Down a Dream, Into the Great Wide Open and Breakdown. It's easy to see why he was so popular. R.I.P.

Lorraine
If anyone finds out more details about his death (i.e. autopsy report), please post it here. Also, am wondering if Stevie Nicks ever made a comment about his passing?

goose
Jason Aldean, whose Vegas concert was the site of the mass shooting a week ago, opened SNL with a cover of Petty's "I Won't Back Down". Rhyta
Went to the local college football game yesterday and they played several Tom Petty songs on the big screen off and on throughout the game. People all around us started singing along, it gave me goosebumps :sigh: It just shows how much he has played a part in many people's lives and how they love him and his music :guitar: Edited October 9, 2017 by Rhyta

MMCXII
I just realized that I don't listen to enough Tom Petty.. I decided to give thanks to him and his music today as I cooked dinner by typing 'Tom Petty hits' into youtube and just letting it play.. Man everything this guy did just sounds so good! With most artists I'm selective and tend to avoid the hits but not with Tom Petty. RIP

Lorraine
Does anyone know how he cracked his hip? I read that the autopsy wasn't conclusive and they have to wait until the toxicology results come back which may take a few more weeks. He did say in that final interview with the LA Times reporter that he was quite exhausted. I'm wondering if that combined with whatever he may have taken to ease his pain could have contributed to his heart failure. http://hollywoodlife.com/2017/10/10/tom-petty-death-certificate-photo-cardiac-arrest-died-document/ Edited October 10, 2017 by Lorraine
