I don't hate Rivendell, but it's too long and coming right after another not great song hurts the album a bit for me.

I don't like the way Geddy sings it, it's like he's auditioning for some embarrassing role on a kids TV show

The job went to Mr. Rogers instead.

Four of eight tracks are top-shelf Rush: Anthem, By-Tor, BB&B, and In the End. The title track has never thrilled me but, like the remaining tracks (Best I Can, Making Memories, and the rather soporific Rivendell), it's inoffensive.

 

On most days I'd rank it 10th best, after (in no particular order) 2112 through HYF.

I more or less agree. They could have done more with it. I think the nylon string guitar is nice, the ethereal guitar is cool and appropriate, and the melody is pleasant enough - but rather than all those verses it would have been cool if the song progressed - maybe build in some more instrumentation and stick a nice long clean-sounding solo in there (or maybe one played on classical guitar).

Rivendell is one of the most boring songs Rush ever did.

Feel there's something calling me, I'm wanting to return...

Great album that fizzes out with Rivendell and the over long plodder, In the End. Could have coped with Rivendell if it was followed by something epic.

I used to love In The End, but it's dropped off my radar along with most of this album.

In the End starts off great but by the end of the guitar solo it really plods along almost dirge like.

Nope. Its fine and many thanks for your concern. Like grasbo, I happen to like the change of pace. It helps make In the End a much better song than it would be otherwise.

 

I would definately not want an album full of Rivendell like songs, but as a change I will take it over Making Memories, Frankly, I can at least remember Rivendell. I have a hard time remembering Making Memories. Its not horrible but its just totally lost among far better songs on a very good album.

 

Which would I prefer, an album full of Making Memories songs or an album full of Rivendell style songs?? Neither frankly. Give me an album full of By-Tor. But if must take one or the other, give me the elves,

 

BTW - the more I think about it, this is definately a top 10 album for me.

Its position after Rivendell makes In the End feel like Xanadu or Natty Sci!
