Digital Man

If anyone here plays the drums, can you tell me if the drums to this song are difficult to play? I'm listening to the remaster of Signals and just noticed the drums in the song. Some fancy playing in parts it sound like to me.

I've been playing to Rush music on the drums since 1982. That opening fill on "Digital Man" is fukking amazing and incredible. Hard to replicate.

I have said this on here for years. "Digital Man" is a masterpiece.

Of course you can hear some of The Police in "Signals" and GUP." The boys were heavily influenced by The Police for those records.

Not sure if I have told this story but why not type it again. This comes from one of my best buddies who is a professional drummer in the business.

Perhaps it is public knowledge now.

So Stewart Copeland many decades ago went to see RUSH. Not sure on the year. I can't remember.

Stevie waited backstage to meet Neil to say hello and talk music.

Neil totally blew him off.

Typical Neil.

He blows off his fans and other drummers.

I believe since then though the two have become friends.

It's common knowledge that Stewart showed up for the last ever afterparty for RUSH at The Forum gig.

To tell you the truth, I was going to send you a pm to ask this question but thought to search for a Digital Man thread instead.

I heard a few things in the song that made me think that it would be difficult for an inexperienced drummer to replicate. I was listening to the remastered Signals album when I heard those parts. I'll see if I can find it on youtube and post it here and point out the parts of the song to you.

You are right that DM is a masterpiece.

Yes my dear friend.

I will always be honest and truthful in public or in private.

You are a wonderful woman.

Post it Lorraine!

RUSH RULES!

YOU RULE!

Certain sections are a study in how snare ghost notes get lost in the final production.

There are so many more talented drummers on here who post their bands and their covers and music.

Love it.

Life is short.

Go listen to "The Sphere."

I played that song at my wedding. I thought I would be married forever.

It failed.

By the way, I am conservative.

I am sure most of you know this.

Just sickened by today.

A good day to count your blessings.

I just took up drums this week after five years of not playing at all. It feels great!

:syrinx:

P.S. I listened to Meliora today. :haz:

It's a big place with lots of geographical and cultural divides. Which is an ok thing in my book.

Digital Man is a total miss in my book. I recall reading an interview with Terry Brown and this song is what probably finalized him leaving his relationship with the band: Rush spent forever in he studio perfecting it and Terry just wanted to move on. He felt it was not a song worth the time. I think he may have crossed a line with the band and his opinion that the song was a dud. Again, this is something I recall seeing or reading quite a while ago.

Terry got it right IMO. It just doesn't go anywhere that's musically creative. Signals has some classics and real misses. I don't get he love for it...

I recall reading something similar. I seem to remember Terry saying he absolutely hated the "he's got a force field and flexible plan" part. He felt the music in that section totally sucked the energy out of the song.

I think Terry was absolutely right abiut that lol. That's the point I usually move on from the song.

He got a raw deal in his departure from the band but I can't blame a band like rush for wanting to take on new challenges and trying to evolve. But how I miss the sweet crisp sound and production he obtained on Permanent waves and Moving Pictures. They were a great team. Every time I hear the horrible quality on albums like presto, vapor trails, or clockwork angels I think about what terry brown may have done with it.

Terry can suck it.

DM is one of the best tracks, and Alex solos, on Signals.

I agree it's reasonable they wanted to work with others, but at some point, especially when they were having difficulty finding their way away from the tinny and synth sound in the early 90s, they should have brought Terry back.

One of the worst songs of Rush and a reason I do not rate Signals very highly.
