Heaviest: Vapor Trails

Poppiest: Presto

Atypical: Hold Your Fire

HYF/PW's uniqueness is why they're my favorites. PW has this cold, urban, stark sound that can never be or has been emulated. HYF has this Blade Runner, Asian feel that is hyperdynamic and unique.

Rush never really got terribly heavy, but Vapor Trails is probably their heaviest, maybe Clockwork Angels as well. The production of the former plays a big role, and the sound is very "angry" with lyrics very much driven by Neil Peart's tragedies. Their poppiest album is probably Hold Your Fire, not much rocking, lots of '80s pop. Most atypical is the debut! Conventional Zeppelin-y hard rock with silly lyrics.

Heaviest can mean different things to different people. To some that means production as well as thick layered songs. It could also relate to song composition. As far as heavy and doomy, I’d put Vapor Trails way up there. It just drags. Then CA and Snakes for the same reason. Poppiest is a bit more specific so I’d say Presto or RTBs. Atypical? The debut. 2112- easy listening by todays standards but heavy AF for its time.

Power windows-they tried to sell out. Thankfully they did not fully suceed.

Clockwork angels- the strings were great and the guy who wrote them is the man. I like ca but its different because of the 4th member....

Vapor Trails for me, is their heaviest, Hold Your Fire is their poppiest, and the first album is the atypical album.

To me, Vapor Trails is the atypical one. I don't necessarily consider it heavy. Sure, Alex's tone is noisy and overdriven and some of the drumming and riffs are 'crashy', for lack of a better word. But musically speaking, it has probably the fewest number of interesting progressions and there are zero guitar solos. I'd say it's actually closer to poppiest than heaviest since it's a borderline sellout to the alternative crowd.

But HYF is definitely the poppiest without question.

I give Hemispheres the honor of heaviest. Complex and sophisticated playing throughout, but also kicks your ass from start to finish.

2112

Presto / HYF...but prob Presto

debut, as far out as some of their other different albums got, they always carried the essence of Rush, which wasn't really developed until FBN. On the debut, they're just a different band, not necessarily worse, but very different.

Vapor Trails is heaviest. I understand the arguments against it, and I think there are different ways of interpreting the word heavy. For me, it absolutely is the "weight" of the over-driven guitar and fuzzy bass that makes it heavy.

A lot of Power Windows - Roll the Bones can be considered poppy, but I chose Hold Your Fire because I think it sounded the most successfully poppy, rather than unintentional.

Rush, the debut, is the most atypical. It has an immaturity to it, and no real ambition beyond "we want to make a record!". Every other Rush album, success or failure, had a lot of thought connecting the whole thing. The "Rush for Dummies" guide says it best, because at least half the songs can be summarized with "I'm horny." Rush pretty much never did that ever again.

Hemispheres is the most "metal" album in the catalog.

HYF is 80s synth pop thru and thru.

HYF is the most atypical album because it's the worst one.

Their best effort is Hold Your Fire in my opinion. Hemispheres is ok but near the bottom.

2112 - Urgent, heavy, hard hitting, desperate.....in your face. 2112 is the heaviest for me. Not forced. Pure youth and vibrance and a massive statement album.

Hold Your Fire - One of my favorites from Rush. Such a joy to listen to anytime. It has some of their very best melodies and production. Incredible it is just the 3 of them. And live......they pulled it off amazingly. Time Stand Still, Open Secrets, Second Nature, Mission, Lock And Key, Prime Mover, Force Ten, Turn The Page......Rush pop at it’s best.

Vapor Trails - A very disjointed and confusing album. Lot’s of emotion. But IMO a cobbled together album for the most part. You can easily tell the struggle it was to record this. Half of it was demo like quality for Rush’s standards. They felt compelled to remix it.....that's how bad the production was on most (not all) of the tracks. There are some gems on the album (Ghost Rider, Earthshine, Vapor Trail, Nocturne, Sweet Miracle, Stars Look Down) and some real duds. Just an uneven album, and I really disliked Alex’s tone on this album. Just everything sonically was a mess.

Happy to be a bottom-dweller...
