I've only read his first book and while it is obvious he IS shy, he also has great contempt for the sorts of people he doesn't like. There's a lot of negative feelings in there that can't be explained by saying he's shy. I'm very shy but I can be polite to strangers even if I mutter afterwards, and I'd never publish truly bad thoughts about someone I didn't even know. He's the one who wanted to go back to Rush after his loss and he made it sound like after he met Carrie, life was sunshine and roses.
