I think an epic needs to move through different moods - and definitely have different musical parts, riffically and structurally. Xanadu and Jacob's Ladder are probably the best examples. La Villa is an epic instrumental. None of the other instrumentals are, even Monkey Bizz in spite of its length.

I don't think Clockwork has any epic songs, but it's an epic album, more along the lines of 2112, which I never think of as one "song" but a collection of linked songs that together are epic. Soliloquy has epic qualities.

Reading the comments makes me think everyone has a different idea of what "epic" means. To me, it means "great"

or "awesome" or "excellent" so I voted for The Wreckers, The Anarchist, and The Garden, which are my 3 faves from CA.

I inadvertently started a debate on the musical definition of the word "epic", which is probably a more interesting conversation than the actual one I tried to start.

"Top definition

the most overused word ever, next to fail. for even more asshole points, use them together to form "epic fail."

everything is epic now. epic car. epic haircut. epic movie. epic album. epic shut the f**k up.

saying "epic win" doesn't make you sound any better, either. and for f***s sake, don't ever say it in person."

I wouldn't say any of the Clockwork Angels songs are long enough or multi-parted enough to be considered "epics". Though in my mind, the title track and Headlong Flight both come quite close. Epics haven't been Rush's thing for a very long time and I don't think it's ever been their biggest forte. Not in the same way it was with Yes for example. If anything, I'd say one of Rush's strengths is taking a shorter song and making it sound as epic as a much longer song (a quality they share with Queen and Muse) but I still wouldn't consider those songs to be "epics" because by definition, they're not. I would consider the only Rush epics to be By-Tor and the Snow Dog, The Necromancer, The Fountain of Lamneth, 2112, Xanadu, Cygnus X-1 Book I: The Voyage, Cygnus X-1 Book II: Hemispheres, La Villa Strangiato, Jacob's Ladder, Natural Science and The Camera Eye.

I think the entire album is one big epic, all the songs tie together and make a storyline

The debate is epic.

You are epic!

I'm epic!

We're all epic!

To be honest, I am sick of everything being referred to as epic...one of my biggest pet peeves :16ton: :gumby: We have a local brewery called Epic, people call their latest meals as epic...it has lost its moorings to the meaning.

Homer's Odyssey is the true epic but I digress....I would agree that long songs could be epic in performance and/or content. I think that Clockwork Angels is similar to 2112 in that it has an involved story arc that needs to be told in a longer format which some would categorize as epic like.

I think the Garden and Headlong Flight are stand out songs on the album and they make a powerful statement but I voted yes for the acknowledgement of their style and impact on the listener and leave the epic descriptions alone. They rock, they touch the heart and I enjoy them very much :haz:

LOL, probably right. Never listened to the lyrics that well. I’ll give it one more spin. It was a bit of a disappointment. I kind of liked Snakes and Arrows. I liked it as I came back to Rush after years of neglect in between.
