It's like asking which ingredient in nachos is the reason you eat them. It's the combination baby.

But without the chips you have nothing.

Alex and Mike were the beans and cheese. Dave the sour cream that gives it that flair. Eddie...he's the chips.

Ted Templeman was the olive.

Without the chips you have dip. Without the dip you have dry plain chips.

Which are a great start for building a plate of nachos!

Eddie is great and all, and he's probably the reason for a great portion of their success, but if that we're all that was too it that Yngwei Malmsteem would actually be revered by music fans everywhere.

I listen to Van Halen for Van Halen. Not Eddie nor Alex, but the whole band. Their chemistry is electric, truly rock and roll.

I knew when Running With the Devil came out they were going to be special. The music at the time was all these little wimpy guitars, like Dire Straits and The Cars. Eddie was the opposite end of the spectrum and put some balls back into rock. So yes, Eddie was the reason I listened to them to start with.

Eddie and DD.

Two times a year I visit some friends in Eddie's hometown, Nijmegen, Holland. Always a strange feeling to walk the same streets as the van Halen brothers did. :smoke:

Michaels background vocal harmonies are the secret weapon that made them so much fun to listen to.

I like everything up to 1984 but I didn't appreciate those vocal harmonies until years later. And though I'm not a big Van Hagar fan, Michaels did well on those background vocals too.

There never would have been the phenomenon that is Van Halen if DLR wasn't in the lineup. I regard Eddie the greatest hard rock guitarist of all time, but it ain't all about him. Even Alex's killer drums and Mike's fantastic tenor back up vocals helped galvanize the unstoppable ferocity of those first 6 albums. VAN HALEN RULES!!!

I always wondered why Michael never did lead vocals. He has a great voice.

Mine All Mine and Cabo are his best moment in the Hagar era.

I think this is fantastic... Michael and Eddie's vocals.

Michael sounds great! But Dave....he's so damn lazy live in terms of singing the song.

Indeed. Back then, even if he shat on stage à la GG All-in, Dave would be adored, so why bother? He only started caring about singing properly when he didn't seem to have the strength in his voice anymore, like mid-2000's. Such a shame, because he has a good voice, which, given enough training and care, could sound waaaay better live. But hey, I'm just a random guy posting on a forum, and Dave's a legendary rock star, so what do I know?

He definitely could've done the lead. No way was he going to do them during Dave's run but i'm surprised it didn't happen at least a few times during Hagar's.

Michael sang Somebody Get Me a Doctor when Cherone was in the band, and that was one of the very few good things about that particular lineup.

They should've just become a trio and not had Cherone at all! The VH bros & Michael. It could've worked!

Mitch Malloy was offered the role, but I think he turned it down, or the brothers changed their mind. He would have been a great fit. I have nothing against Cherone's voice, but his stage presence is quite annoying.

I love VH with DLR, but I disagree. Eddie commands attention, and he's not that shabby of a stage presence either.

It may have taken VH longer to gain notoriety, but they still would have become famous, especially since they were from the LA area.

Thank God or Luck I was the 1984 Tour! I've seen VAN HALEN four times with Wolfgang on the bass. As I did love those shows the band does need Michael Anthony for sure!

I love Dave and Eddie the most but man you need Dave Eddie Michael and Alex together to create that ME WISE MAGIC!
