  1. 1. Who is a main reason why you are a fan of Van Halen?

    • David Lee Roth (frontman)
    • Eddie Van Halen (guitarist)
    • Alex Van Halen (drummer)
    • Michael Anthony (bassist)

I bought the first album when it came out because of the cover. I was shocked at the greatness of the music to be honest. The totality of the music was the draw and not any one individual...

Is there an "All of the Above" option?

Exactly. I love Dave's voice on those first 6 albums. Eddie is, IMO, the greatest rock guitarist of all time, hands down. Michael Anthony's background vocals were a big part of the VH sound. Really, only Alex could be replaced by another competent drummer for me and it wouldn't matter. But that might have affected Eddie's productivity, so you probably needed Alex as well.

He really is. Eddie was born to play that guitar. He's not too shabby on the keyboard either. That intro to Jump - 1984 - always gets me.

I agree with Narps: It wasn't a single individual. For me, at the tender age of 11 in or around 1980, I thought the band looked badass on both sides of the Women and Children First album (don't judge; I was young and impressionable!). Then I started hearing the singles from that album on the radio ("Everybody Wants Some," "And the Cradle Will Rock...").

At that point I just had to buy the album with my meager allowance, and it remains my favorite of their catalog to this day.

Valerie Bertinelli said she became interested in Eddie because of the cover of Women and Children First, too.

I listened to an interview with her and Howard Stern. Good thing for her Howard likes her.

It's like asking which ingredient in nachos is the reason you eat them. It's the combination baby.

But without the chips you have nothing.

Alex and Mike were the beans and cheese. Dave the sour cream that gives it that flair. Eddie...he's the chips.

Ted Templeman was the olive.

Without the chips you have dip. Without the dip you have dry plain chips.
