[Ancient Ways]

Pick the 2-3 places a visitor should not miss if they are visiting your town and are looking for something unique. I'll start.

 

Las Margaritas. West hillsborough Ave. Tampa.

Great Cuban food at ridiculously low prices. Typical meal would be a Palomilla Steak, bowl of rice, black beans, platanos and a drink for around $8. Not a pretty place but loads of food at a great price.

 

Ted Peters Smoked Fish. Pasadena Ave. Gulfport.

Smoked mullet, mackarel, salmon plus burgers. You must order the smoked fish spread with crackers - it's amazing. This place is a real hole-in-the-wall. You eat outside in a slightly covered area on picnic benches or at the bar.

 

Brocato's Sandwich shop. East Columbus Ave. Tampa.

Their roast pork and Cuban sandwiches are fantastic but the real treat is the

bacon, egg, and cheese breakfast sandwich on toasted, pressed Cuban bread.

Another old establishment with a tiny dining room or you can eat outside in a covered area.

I could go on and on about Omaha's food. I believe we still hold the "Most restaurants per capita" in the U.S.

 

So, for Omaha, Nebraska...

- Venice Inn (or really any restaurant owned by the Caniglias) :: It's a fantastic, of course locally-owned restaurant in the midtown area. They specialize as an Italian steakhouse. The original restaurant, Mr. C's, closed down a few years ago but the Caniglia family still has shops open. I believe this was a restaurant featured on some Food Network show a few years back. In any case, it's an Omaha tradition. (And psst.. I used to live across from Mr. and Mrs. C!)

- Dundee Dell :: Another Omaha tradition, around for many, many years. Their reknowned specialty are the fish and chips, and I must say, they're quite excellent. It's set in a quaint little neighborhood that has a small-town kind of feel. It's a tiny restaurant but it's packed almost all the time. They even ship food to you. How convenient.

- Ted & Wally's Ice Cream Shop :: ..And for dessert, hit this local ice cream shoppe downtown! All right, for ice cream, it's a little pricey, but come on, you wouldn't be spending anything less over at the local Dairy Queen. They have an ever-changing menu, with local specialties and classic flavours. The staff is always friendly, the shop always clean, and the ice cream always freshly made and worth every penny.

 

There are tons and tons of other great restaurants, from Greek to Vietnamese to Cuban, Sudanese, Chinese, Japanese, on and on. My one suggestion? If you're going to come to Nebraska, get a steak. I don't care if you're here for the College World Series and you want a ballpark hotdog, go somewhere and order a steak!

Ernies Subs-tiny sub place right outside the "hood". best peppersteak sub ever made. hell, best subs ever.

For the Raleigh Durham area, I'd recommend:

 

Abbey Road Grill in Cary, NC - great hamburgers

 

The Know Bookstore in Durham, NC - best soul food I've ever tasted! Love their trout with red beans and rice. Great on Friday nights while listening to live jazz by local musicians.

 

Vic's in Raleigh's downtown. Great italian food.

Gus's Chicken..several locations but not a chain. Original is in Mason which is about 25 minutes Northeast of Memphis

 

Lot-o-Pig In Covington which is about 30 minutes north of Memphis. Well worth the trip. Have to try the spicy mustard slaw and hot sauce.

Your post reminded me of a trip I took up your way a couple of years ago. Even though I wasn;t always hungry I made a point of stopping for White Castle in northern Indiana, a Tim Horton's in Michigan, and I got a hot dog at O'Hare (even though that may not count as a true Chicago dog). even saw a Frisch's Big boy in Michigan but I went to Horton's instead.

If anyone's ever in Salt Lake City, Utah, these places are classic

 

Crown Burgers - excellent char broiled burgers and greek food. Was featured on some Food Network show.

 

Milcreek Cafe - A ridiculously small time breakfast place with amazing chicken fried steak and omelets. That's enough for me.

 

Training Table - A Utah burger place where you order inside the restaurant by a phone at your table. Not an amazing place but for $6 you get a great burger.

Like where you guys live, there are a lot of good eats around this town. Here is one of my favorites (Kinryu Ramen)...no walls (with all the noises and sights of Osaka around you), open 24 hours a day, fast, and damn tasty!!

For my hometown, Rocky Mount, NC there is a place in downtown called "Central Cafe" which serves up the best hamburgers and hotdogs. It's just like a diner and it's cooked the way it should be cooked!

 

It's been in town for decades and is a hometown favorite.

I will tell you this, if you travel to Austin Texas you are going to hear all about "The Salt Lick" a BBQ joint south west of Ausitn in a community called Driftwood.... It's been featured on Food Network, Travel Channel..etc..

 

"The Salt Lick" is good, do not get me wrong, but if you want some good BBQ and you are in the Austin area, do yourself a favor and drive 20 minutes from Austin to a Town called "Lockhart Texas" Kreuz's, Smittys (Same BBQ with these two, same recipe, same family that had a falling out and 2 places resulted), and Black's.... all beat the shit out of "The Salt Lick"

The Cedar Rapids area has some awesome restaurants my favorites are.

1. The Lost Cuban: Yes I kid you not there really is a cuban restaurant in Iowa, It's one of my favorite spots for Cuban Sandwiches, Empanadas, Arroz con Pollo and much more. It's a rather small restaurant in downtown Cedar Rapids.
   
2. The Flying Weinie: This unique Aviation themed Lunch spot located in former gas station is a Cedar Rapids institution best known for doing , Chicago dogs, Italian Beef and other classic American lunch fare. You cannot miss it just look for the red building with an aircraft on the roof.
   
3. Zoey's Pizza Located in the Cedar Rapids suburb of Marion Zoey's Pizza is one of the best places to get pizza, I recommend the Chicago style deep dish, but future diners be advised the restaurant can get packed really fast. (My advice: Arrive early or do carryout.)

If you're ever in Gardnerville, eat here. Basque family style dining, with fantastic steak, lamb, chicken, shrimp and rabbit entrees.

Not necessarily unique, but our new goto joint is RayRay's Italian Beef. The owner is a Chicago transplant and they have all the food you'd find in Chicago except pizza. Everything is good and it's a painful process to pick because you have to eliminate other awesome options. The 'dining room' is about half the size of my living room. Two tables and a stand-up counter. Located between a divey barber shop and a divey liquor store.

 

The story on the name is the owner's name is Robert, but he had a son named Ray who died of a tumor at 6. Then he had another son and named him Ray.
