Steven Wilson Confirmed End of Hiatus, Porcupine Tree is dead. :(

I'm sure this is no news, but speculation is over. It's a dead band now. This is probably the biggest heartbreak for me. Porcupine Tree's official closure is only rivaled by Rush, when they eventually call it quits.

Honestly, I'm not sad. More than anything, I'm relieved that the band has been put to rest. There's nothing worse than dragging your fans on for nearly a decade when it comes to the question of when another album is coming. Looking back at it, it's clear that the quality of material being put out was sub-standard to what they had done earlier. Put in the factor of the members all doing their own separate projects away from each other, that probably had a lot to do with the dissolve as well. At the end of the day, Porcupine Tree is more than the sum of its parts. As big as Steven has gotten, especially over the last 10 years, I think people have inflated him as being the true genius behind PT. I certainly don't see the guys having any ill will towards each other. They stayed together for nearly a quarter century, obviously they have a good friendship. But their paths just separated. I would hope they could get back together again, but if they don't feel they would be able to make good material, there's nothing to be done.

Steven seems to be in a much better form as a solo artist than as the member of a band. Ever since Grace for Drowning, he's proven over and over again that his talents as a solo writer justify it.

Some of Porcupine Tree's best work was put out towards the end.

Fear of a Blank Planet is my favorite album by them. The Incident was the only real blemish I saw at the end of their run.

And as far as the members all going their separate ways, Gavin Harrison seems to be the only other member to have some real success after the band ended. He probably would have stayed with PT if they stayed a group. Now he's just releasing PT Jazz covers and is currently playing with King Crimson

I used to dislike The Incident for a long while too, but now I love it and it's only growing on me more.

Considering that most people equate porcupine tree with Steven Wilson and he has a very consistent solo career, it probably isn't that big of a loss. Edited by fraroc

In the words of Robert Fripp, unless you've seen or heard Porcupine Tree, you don't have the right to form an opinion. Your track record proves it and I honestly doubt your sincerity on your opinion.

Porcupine Tree was a band with 4 distinct personalities. SW's solo career is basically his vision and his vision alone. Your opinion does not equate AT ALL.

Yep.

Most people equate PT and SW? Maybe most people who know of him and his projects, but don't actually listen.

And before that Porcupine Tree began as a Wilson solo project.

Either way I don't give a f**k. I love PT, but all things must pass. There may not be a PT today because of Steven, but there never would have been a PT AT ALL without him either. Who better to kill it than the man who gave it life to begin with...?

So goes life.

I'm just saying that just because PT as a band is no more, doesn't mean the well has dried up for the creativity and music. As I said, Steven Wilson has a relatively successful solo career, he released a solo album literally ten days ago and after listening to a little bit of it, the well definitely hasn't dried up AT ALL.

Nowhere in my original post did I ever imply SW's well has dried up for musical creativity. If you knew your facts, he's made music as No-Man, Blackfield, IEM, Storm Corrosion, and Bass Communion which has a new 10" coming out next month.

And as for his new solo album, thanks for stating the obvious, Sherlock. I've already posted on the To The Bone thread many times already and I even listened to the album again today...and I think it's great even if it isn't my favorite thing he's done. I like to know what your opinion is on it...if you even listened to it yet. Regardless, my opinion still stands.

Oh will you EVER forgive me for not being as familiar with Steven Wilson as you? Listen dude, we all have our own obscure thing that we're into. Do you know who Tim Donahue is? Maybe you do, maybe you don't. Not a lot of people do, but I happen to be a huge fan of his work.

Anyway, I do find the opening track to be a very beautiful song and I'm actually listening to more of it right now as I type this.
