Bones has a lot of sentimental value for me.. I'd just turned 21 when it came out. Loved the tour. I was living in FL going to school . Had a fun girlfriend and was lovin' life.

Lots of great songs on that record. A few weak ones too, but the strong ones carry it, for me.

I agree with you about this record. The great tracks have a way of out weighing the lesser ones. That is why it is number 11 on my countdown.

LOL sometimes that happens!

If I did a full-on binge now, I wonder if my rankings would change!

Seems like Perm Waves and HYF are always #1 and #2.

I would think that most long time Rush fans find that their favorite albums don't change over time.

Enjoying the thread; However, I feel like I have difficult time ranking the Rush albums like this. I find myself feeling nostalgic about certain albums more than others - and this changes fairly frequently; I also somewhat relate each album with its tour (for example, a reason I would have a hard time placing TFE low and I loved the tour, seeing it multiple times.) Another factor is I dig the songwriting more or less on various albums, or the actual playing, and yet another factor is the production which can sour an impression. Too many factors make the comparison too difficult. An example of this is Hold Your Fire. A very nostalgic album for me (senior year in high school, girlfriend, etc.) - but I also can't forget the first impression with my fellow old-school Rush fan / band-mates - of which I was the only one that made it through Rush's stylistic change with this album (will never forget my metalish guitarist's face when he first heard Time Stand Still. Nope. lol. However, as a drummer that liked other things beyond metal, I was thrilled!) The songs are fairly good, but a little plain structurally, but with some really nice atmospheres (too much reliance on "sound effects"). Also, there was the tour - seeing multiple shows, hi-jinx with friends and girlfriend going to those shows, squashed up against the stage front row at one general admission show... the memories are strong. However, when I try to look at that tour objectively, I have to say, I thought it was not too great. Song selection was very limited; especially devoid of "classics", the guitar sound live was terrible, too much reliance on sequenced bits and sound effects (each of the four shows I was at, the rear speaker sound effects were way too loud and out of time with the band.) I felt the tour was inferior to P/G (my first) on multiple levels, and inferior to any of the "Evening with" shows from Oct 96 on... (though it was probably better than Presto tour and possibly the RtB winter tour - RtB summer was when I noticed they had finally brought it again!) So, my feelings about HYF are mixed - and hard to sort out.

Anyway, looking forward to where you take it. Maybe I'll sort out my own criteria and give it a shot.

This has been pretty tough. Most of these albums from 16-11 on my list were tough to rank. I am glad you are reading my posts. Thanks!

My top 3 (Moving Pictures, Permanent Waves, & Hemispheres) never move from the top 3. They just swirl around switching positions in that top 3.

My bottom 3 (Snakes, Bones, and Echo) do the same thing.

It's everything else that fights to be as close as possible to the top 3...or away from the bottom 3. This group is much much harder to put in order.

Ahhh, as long as I'm here I might as well try putting them in order...

1) Moving Pictures

2) Permanent Waves

3) Hemispheres

4) A Farewell to Kings

5) 2112

6) Signals

7) Power Windows

8) Caress of Steel

9) Grace Under Pressure

10) Hold Your Fire

11) Fly By Night

12) Counterparts

13) Clockwork Angels

14) Presto

15) Rush

16) Vapor Trails

17) Test for Echo

18) Roll the Bones

19) Snakes & Arrows

8-16 were particularly hard to rank.

We are now at number 9. This album has heavy guitar riffs, great lyrics, and excellent production value.

Each track will be rated as follows: Awful, Very Poor, Poor, Below Average, Average, Above Average, Good, Great, Superb

Each album will be rated on a scale of 1 to 10.

9. Counterparts

Year: 1993

Track Listing:

1. Animate

Animate is a very strong opener with great sounding guitar riffs, excellent lyrics, and terrific drumming and bass. The guitar solo is great as well.

Grade: Superb

2. Stick It Out

What a heavy song for Rush. As a huge fan of heavy and extreme metal, hearing Rush do this kind of track makes me so happy. The riffs are heavy and the chorus is really catchy.

Grade: Superb

3. Cut to the Chase

This song has another great chorus. The more hard rock oriented guitar riffs are brought back as well. The guitar solo is a nice addition.

Grade: Great

4. Nobody's Hero

I really love the emotion and lyrics of this song. It's great to listen to. Definitely the most emotional track from the album.

Grade: Great

5. Between Sun & Moon

The chorus of this song brings it down a lot. The rest of the song is pretty good though.

Grade: Above Average

6. Alien Shore

Alien Shore has excellent drumming and a very catchy chorus. I don't love the verses though, but this is still a good song.

Grade: Good

7. The Speed of Love

Now comes the only stinker from the album. It's cheesy, boring, and it actually kept this album down a spot in my rankings.

Grade: Very Poor

8. Double Agent

Here's the most ambitious track from the album. It has a very eerie narration style during the verses and the chorus is fantastic. The bass work is also top notch. I love this song.

Grade: Superb

9. Leave That Thing Alone

This is such an impressive instrument. The guitars and bass are utilized well and of course Neil's drumming is top notch.

Grade: Superb

10. Cold Fire

Cold Fire is definitely one of the catchiest tracks on the entire album. The chorus is fantastic and I really love the lyrics.

Grade: Superb

11. Everyday Glory

I really enjoy the overall meaning of the song, but is a bit over dramatic for me. It's still a solid track though.

Grade: Above Average

Counterparts sounds amazing. The production is top notch and Rush was finally a guitar driven band again. There are mostly good tracks on this album and it's a very great effort from the band. The lyrical concept that is based around men and women being counterparts is also brilliant.

Rating: 9/10

Wow! #9 and already 9 out of 10!

Last time I chimed in I talked about my top 3 off that album. So for this one I might as well talk about my bottom 3.

And, using your scale, they are:

- Speed of Love (Awful)...lyrically weak, musically comatose, in my top 5 worse Rush songs

- Everyday Glory (Poor)...lyrically below average, musically forgettable, sounds like it belongs as the theme song for an old tv drama like Touched By An Angel

- Nobody's Hero (Below Average)...musically average but somewhat too safe; additionally, the song's hurt by the lyrics; important to note that a below average Rush song isn't too bad in the grand scheme of music

Everyday Glory and Cold Fire...Rush would be one of my favourite bands of all time if these two were the only songs they ever wrote.

Seriously!

I actually like the album but...I do tend to just play these two songs lol.

I once took off the three weakest RTB songs and added these two to it as a playlist and enjoyed it a lot!

Here's my Steve Smith imitation...

"Johnny, what instrument do you play? What instrument do you play? What instrument do you play? Hello? Please reply. I'm sorry. I hope we can move on from this. Hello? I'm deeply sorry. Johnny? Are you mad at me?"

Talking to Steve Smith is like watching a coked up hamster running in one of those little hamster wheels while simultaneously having a jackhammer pounding away 2 inches from your ear.

We are now at number 8. This is a polarizing album that is very synth heavy. Many fans hate it and many fans love it.

Each track will be rated as follows: Awful, Very Poor, Poor, Below Average, Average, Above Average, Good, Great, Superb

Each album will be rated on a scale of 1 to 10.

8. Power Windows

Year: 1985

Track Listing:

1. The Big Money

The Big Money is the most instantly enjoyable track from the entire album. It has great synths, an excellent guitar solo, and really good bass.

Grade: Superb

2. Grand Designs

Grand Designs is fantastic. It has a great chorus, awesome synths, and a really good guitar solo.

Grade: Superb

3. Manhattan Project

This song has great lyrics and another fantastic chorus. I love the overall sound of the entire track. Geddy's bass shines.

Grade: Superb

4. Marathon

Marathon is a really good song, but I think it lasts too long and its chorus is not my favorite. I still enjoy it quite a bit though.

Grade: Good

5. Territories

Territories is another lyrical beast with some really catchy guitar riffs and another really strong chorus. Obviously, the synth work is top notch.

Grade: Great

6. Middletown Dreams

The lyrics and Lifeson's excellently timed guitar licks make this song so good. The synth work and the guitar solo are both fantastic.

Grade: Superb

7. Emotion Detector

Now comes the only song I don't like on the album. The guitar solo is fantastic and I enjoy the chorus, but everything else is meh.

Grade: Above Average

8. Mystic Rhythms

This is the most atmospheric track on the album. It feels magical and really puts me in a great mood.

Grade: Great

Power Windows is an odd album for me. My views have completely changed since I first heard it. It has grown on me a lot and I used to dislike this album. I love the intricate guitar work and the synths as well. It really is a great album.

Rating: 9/10
