We are now at number 16. Most fans are not going to like the album I put here. I do like the album I am placing here though.

Each track will be rated as follows: Awful, Very Poor, Poor, Below Average, Average, Above Average, Good, Great, Superb

Each album will be rated on a scale of 1 to 10.

16. Fly by Night

Year: 1975

Track Listing:

1. Anthem

Anthem is a great hard rocking opener. It has awesome guitar riffs, great drumming, and great vocals. The guitar solo is top notch.

Grade: Great

2. Best I Can

Best I Can reminds me of their debut album. It reverts back to that simple hard rock formula.

Grade: Above Average

3. Beneath, Between & Behind

Here is a track that demonstrates the huge progression lyrically for the band as Neil uses metaphors to describe America.

Grade: Good

4. By-Tor and the Snow Dog

The band's first epic is definitely their least impressive. Still, this song is very impressive musically and has fun fantasy lyrics.

Grade: Good

5. Fly by Night

Now comes the polarizing title track. Some absolutely love it. I do not. Rush has much better songs than this on the album itself and in their catalog. It's simple and catchy, but that's about it.

Grade: Above Average

6. Making Memories

Making Memories is a very enjoyable listen with great acoustic guitar and lyrics. I love how quick and fun the song is to listen to.

Grade: Good

7. Rivendell

Now comes the most boring track on the album. This track will put anyone to sleep. I really don't mind the Tolkien inspired lyrics, but the music itself is a bore to listen to.

Grade: Very Poor

8. In the End

I like the lyrics and I enjoy the acoustic opening. When the guitar switches over from acoustic to electric, it really feels epic. I enjoy the guitar solo as well, but Geddy's humming is a little awkward. My one flaw is the song could have been shorter. It really does last too long. With all that being said, this is a a good closer

Grade: Good

Fly by Night is a huge shift in musical direction. Rush still has 70s style hard rock throughout the album, but take a new progressive approach. Neil Peart is a huge improvement on the drums. His lyricism also make this album much more meaningful. I think this album is on a similar level as their debut, but has an improved musical style with vastly improved lyrics.

19. Test for Echo

Year: 1996

Track Listing:

1. Test for Echo

What a great opener to an album. Test for Echo has amazing drumming, fast paced bass playing, and heavy guitar riffs. The chorus is very effective as well.

Grade: Great

2. Driven

Wow, what a phenomenal song! Driven has heavy guitar riffs, catchy bass lines, and fantastic drumming. Geddy's vocal delivery is hit and miss throughout this album, but he kills it on this track.

Grade: Superb

3. Half the World

Half the World is a softer peace of music that is enjoyable to listen to at first, but it becomes a drag because of boring lyrics and repetitive music. This track may be well liked by some Rush fans, but definitely not one for me.

Grade: Poor

4. The Color of Right

The Color of Right has some really good guitar work and is solid musically. Despite this, the track is one of Rush's worst. This is because of Geddy's awkward vocal delivery and the horrible sounding chorus. It really makes me cringe a little bit.

Grade: Very Poor

5. Time and Motion

Time and Motion is a unique listening experience that seems to grow on me with every listen. The guitar riff is heavy and Neil's drumming is great too. The guitar solo is phenomenal and is definitely one of Lifeson's most underrated. It's an odd tune, but it is very effective.

Grade: Good

6. Totem

Totem has a really good chorus and a great guitar solo, but is very lackluster during the verses. It's a strange tune that I really don't like because of its inconsistency and poor listening experience.

Grade: Poor

7. Dog Years

This is probably the Rush song that is most painful to listen to. This song has excellent bass, but the lyrics are terrible. The music feels disjointed and really does not flow well. Dog Years is odd and really does not work on any level.

Grade: Awful

8. Virtuality

Virtuality has an amazing heavy guitar riff. The drumming is also fantastic. The main problem with the song is another weak chorus. It really takes my interest away from the track when the chorus happens. Still it is a very unique listening experience. The track does not flow well though and feels disjointed.

Grade: Average

9. Resist

Resist is a beautiful track with great melody and I love Lifeson's emotionally driven guitar licks. The song can drag at times though and feels a little repetitive. The studio version isn't as good as the live, but is still a solid track.

Grade: Above Average

10. Limbo

Limbo may be one of Rush's weakest instrumentals, but that isn't really saying much considering how great their instrumental pieces are. Geddy shows a lot of personality through his bass playing and Lifeson's guitar work is excellent.

Grade: Good

11. Carve Away the Stone

Carve Away the Stone has some nice vocal melodies and I love the song's message. My main problem is the song's somewhat anti-climatic approach. I do love the guitar solo though.

Grade: Average

Test for Echo is an odd release that has some good moments, but is lacking in many ways. Rush plays well musically, but the lyrical content of this album is inconsistent. I do like Alex Lifeson's terrific guitar work and Neil Peart's great drumming. Geddy's vocal performance is not up to his normal level, but it's very good on some tracks. Test for Echo may have great moments, but it is definitely the least enjoyable of all the Rush albums for me though.

Rating: 4.5/10

I love, love love Dog Years so i choose to think that your review of the song is awful! :) I also love Totem and Virtuality.

We are now at number 15. Here is the album that began Rush's return to a hard rock sound.

Each track will be rated as follows: Awful, Very Poor, Poor, Below Average, Average, Above Average, Good, Great, Superb

Each album will be rated on a scale of 1 to 10.

15. Presto

Year: 1989

Track Listing:

1. Show Don't Tell

Show Don't tell demonstrates a return to a more guitar oriented sound. I enjoy Lifeson's playing and I also love the drumming.

Grade: Great

2. Chain Lightning

Chain Lightning is a great song with catchy guitar riffs and vocals. The chorus is beautiful and catchy. The guitar solo is great as well.

Grade: Great

3. The Pass

The Pass is the most beautifully written song from the album. It carries tons of atmosphere and emotion that make it an awesome listen.

Grade: Superb

4. War Paint

I can't say I am a huge fan of this song. Its overall sound is lacking in power and emotion. Its chorus is solid though.

Grade: Average

5. Scars

This song will get anybody's head bobbing with that great rhythmic bass line it has. This song has energy that will make anyone start moving.

Grade: Good

6. Presto

Presto is a song that I have never been able to really get into. It's fine, but it seems to drag. The guitar solo is a plus though.

Grade: Average

7. Superconductor

This is one of the catchiest songs from the album. It has good vocals and catchy riffs. There isn't anything that special about it, but it's a solid track.

Grade: Above Average

8. Anagram (For Mongo)

This is an odd tune. It's catchy and has a fun chorus as well as some heavy guitar riffs. Overall it's an okay track.

Grade: Average

9. Red Tide

Red Tide has a perfect blend of piano, synths, and guitar. The chorus is one of Rush's most anthemic. The guitar solo is short and sweet.

Grade: Great

10. Hand Over Fist

This is probably the weakest track on the album. It has a great guitar solo, but the rest of the song is pretty repetitive.

Grade: Average

11. Available Light

This is a beautiful closer to the album. It has that magical feel to it. The chorus is strong and the guitar solo is fantastic.

Grade: Good

Rush's return to their hard rock sound does not blow me away. It has some great songs, but a lot of the material on here is bland and average. The production value has a crisp and clear sound to it, but lacks the powerful sound of other Rush albums. Still, this is a solid release.

Presto has about four songs I could place in my top ten all time favourite Rush tunes:

1. Chain Lightning

2. The Pass

3. Presto

4. Red Tide

5. Available Light

OKAY THAT IS FIVE

And Show Don't Tell is close!

We are now at number 14. Here is the worst of their four synth heavy releases

Each track will be rated as follows: Awful, Very Poor, Poor, Below Average, Average, Above Average, Good, Great, Superb

Each album will be rated on a scale of 1 to 10.

14. Hold Your Fire

Year: 1987

Track Listing:

1. Force Ten

Force Ten is an awesome opening track. The synths are amazing and all of the instruments really come together to make a great sound.

Grade: Superb

2. Time Stand Still

This is a beautiful song with great lyricism and a nice addition of a female vocalist. All the instruments are used to perfection for this type of song.

Grade: Great

3. Open Secrets

The opening riff in this song is awesome, and it is repeated several times throughout. Lifeson's guitar work is great and the lyrics again are top notch.

Grade: Great

4. Second Nature

I can't get into this track. It's slow and boring. It really drags and I can't wait to skip to the next song.

Grade: Poor

5. Prime Mover

I really like the synth and bass in this song. Lifeson's riffs are actually heavy at times. It's a cheesy song, but it's definitely grown on me.

Grade: Above Average

6. Lock and Key

Now comes perhaps the best song on the entire album. The drumming is great. The combination of guitar and synth is perfectly balanced as well. I love the vocals and the outstanding chorus. Lifeson shines with a terrific guitar solo.

Grade: Superb

7. Mission

Mission is a track that has really grown on me over the years. It really is such a well written song. The instrumental section in the track is terrific. That emotional guitar solo is a perfect ending to the song.

Grade: Great

8. Turn the Page

I love Geddy's vocals and bass playing. The chorus is one of the catchiest from the entire album. The synth work is outstanding as well. Lifeson's solo may be his best from this album.

Grade: Great

9. Tai Shan

Tai Shan makes me really wonder what made Rush think this was a good idea. It's boring and anti-climatic. It is definitely the worst song from the album.

Grade: Awful

10. High Water

High Water is musically impressive, but it really does not flow well at all. Some of the guitar riffs are great though. The guitar solo is a nice addition as well.

Grade: Average

This would be the last of the synth-heavy Rush albums. It really could have been a fantastic album if two tracks were removed. With that being said there are 6 or 7 tracks I enjoy, but the others bring the album down. This record is inconsistent, but I still really enjoy it's production value and its musical direction. The synth sounds are great and Lifeson's guitar solos are memorable.

I think HYF is still my favourite Rush album. Yesterday I cautiously ranked it lower but today...I can honestly say it still blows my mind.

I really love every second of this album!!! And Power Windows too. I rank both above Presto. Honestly!

Grace Under Pressure, Power Windows and Hold Your Fire...my favourite era for this band!

Those are their most synth heavy releases. HYF would have been higher, if the band simply removed the last 2 tracks, but I have to take those into consideration. The synth period for Rush is my second favorite behind their progressive period, so you'll see I rank their other synth heavy albums fairly high.

HYF is a polarizing album, no doubt. But yeah, lots of us love it. (or MOST of it anyway! :D) I'm one of those unique ones that (like Segue) loves the whole thing.

We are now at number 13. Here is the album that threatened to derail the band's career. I personally enjoy it though.

Each track will be rated as follows: Awful, Very Poor, Poor, Below Average, Average, Above Average, Good, Great, Superb

Each album will be rated on a scale of 1 to 10.

13. Caress of Steel

Year: 1975

Track Listing:

1. Bastille Day

Bastille Day is a great hard rocking early Rush classic. It has great guitar riffs and solos. It's a really awesome opener.

Grade: Great

2. I Think I'm Going Bald

This is a really silly tune. It has pretty good guitar riffs, but this song's lyrics are really silly.

Grade: Poor

3. Lakeside Park

Lakeside Park is a nice softer tune. It has a good guitar tone and is a fairly enjoyable track. There isn't anything memorable about it though.

Grade: Average

4. The Necromancer

The Necromancer has distorted narration, excellent guitar riffs, and solos. It is a bit of a strange track upon first listen, but this 12 minute epic seems to get better with every listen.

5. The Fountain of Lamneth

What a way to end the album. The Fountain of Lamneth is a 20 minute epic with excellent lyrics, drumming, and guitar playing. There are times that it can drag a little bit, but overall it's a great song.

Grade: Great

This album definitely takes many listens to fully appreciate, but once you do, it is really hard not to love. It's production is not great and at times it doesn't flow well, but there's no doubt in my mind that this is Rush's best of their early pre-2112 period. Lifeson kills it on this record and those epic tracks are fantastic. It's a strange record that I really enjoy.
