The Official Linkin Park Thread

So this week, one of the defining bands of my generation, and also the biggest selling band of this century to date, werr dealt a painful blow.

But we have a thread about that.

This is about the band. Of which I doubt there are too many fans of on TRF.

But what do you guys think of Linkin Park? For me, they are up there with the likes of U2 or REM, as a band that took various influences and forged there own last identity, in spite of experimentation.

I love this band. I've really reconnected with them this week. They used to be a major favourite and I now realise...they still are.

My favourite album is likely A Thousand Suns. But aside from the recent, possibly final album, One More Light, I love everything.

A thousand suns is also my favorite. I feel like their sound really matured there and they were able to try different things without worrying about fan backlash which they did receive for that one.

I remember being indifferent to Minutes To Midnight and I honestly hated A Thousand Suns.

Sometimes bands make such bold moves forward, they leave you confused. But time has been kind to this band. Living Things is a great album as well.

Linkin Park remind me a lot of Thrice. Both bands unexpectedly evolved in a major way on their fourth albums, and neither looked back. I enjoy that.

Actually Lacuna Coil did it on their fourth album...there seems to be a theme haha!

It's hard not to enjoy Linkin Park with a good dose of irony, just from their reputation and well, their tendency towards the cliche. However, I still do enjoy them, more now than ever in fact. Now that I've re-evaluated their legacy and realized what a humongous impact they had on my entire generation, I have much ore respect for them and their career and musical choices than ever before. The sense of irony will always be there, but honestly, I think that's a key ingredient in how they connected with so, SO many of us in the first place. I'm so sad to see Chester go, especially like he did, and I feel so sorry that the new music was widely dissed, by me as well... but I believe in finding hope in the lighter side of things to get through the darker side. As in, so many people are so connected to this band's music. So many people felt the despair and outrage in Linkin Park's work so vividly in their own lives that they let their music a part of their lives, even if only for a limited time. Those people have never forgotten the impact of those songs and albums. They've never forgotten the memories of belting out "Numb" and "Crawling" with their best friends, or memorizing the raps to "Papercut" and "In The End" just to prove they could do it. For me, this tragedy has helped me to realize how important this band really is in so many different people's lives, and I don't think I'm the only one who's realized this.

I think Linkin Park should be thought of, and eventually remembered, as one of this generation's most important, honest, and unifying bands. I know I do.

Thank you for starting this thread! I have always loved their music and radio singles, however, the only album I have is Meteora. What's funny is, when I logged into the board just now, I was looking for a song by them that I really liked and heard years ago and I couldn't remember the name. So I did a search on wikipedia and youtube and found it, the song is called The Catalyst. I hope to pick up more of their albums soon. Edited by Leanne

Yeah, I'm not sure where the irony or cliche comes in. IMO they invented their own sound via mashup. There's a reason the first album is called hybrid theory.

And the music is deep and especially on albums like A Thousand Suns or Living Things, really out there experimental, especially for such commercial music.

Admittedly, I had a hard time connecting with them. Felt like maybe I wasn't the target audience, lol ! But in retrospect I remember thinking that One Step Closer and In The End were really good catchy songs, with a message.. connected with a lot of people.

Last year I heard A Thousand Suns for the first time and really dug it. Great record.

I love that album and the follow up, Living Things, a lot!

Going to try to rank a really outstanding catalogue:

1. A Thousand Suns (9/10) (A stunning work of art)

2. Living Things (9/10) (I love this maybe a little more, but it also follows a little too closely to the template laid by A Thousand Suns)

3. Hybrid Theory (10/10) (Yes really...but...the first two are truly taking my breath away, and I confess tbis masterpiece has been a tad overplayed in my home. Though it never gets old.)

4. Meteora (9/10) (Same as Living Things, I adore this album but I cannot deny it is a little to similar to it's predecessor)

5. Minutes To Midnight (8/10) (An absolute masterpiece let down only by the weighty greatness of what came before. Few bands can boast a single album half as good as this. Linkin Park have four that are even better.)

6. The Hunting Party (8/10) (The exact same argument applies here, an album in second to last place that arguably deserves to be first on any other list. But this one.)

7. One More Light (2/10) (It is a disappointing album. It really saddens me this may be the last).

For me and many of my friends, the overtness of the angst in the music and lyrics, the over-dramatic slant to their sound comes off as a little cliche or ironic, but obviously very effective and connective. That's all I meant by that. I understand not everyone hears them in this way.

One More Light is not close to being a terrible album.

It is the softer side of Linkin Park, which has always existed, with the heaviness removed. And taken for what it is, which is a lighter pop album, it is truly brilliant, with some really strong songwriting and inspired collaborations.

Linkin Park have always been eclectic musically. It is a great shame that this may be the final Linkin Park album, but if so, it lives up to their legacy and makes a soft and haunting final chapter.

8/10

I remember being 15 when their first album dropped. Everybody owned it. EVERYBODY. so their my generation as well.

Having listened again. i enjoy them much more than i did back in the day. they were to freakin' down and whiny to my 15 year old ears.

but i like them better. i will never call them legends. i can't go that far. this band and that term just don't gel for me.

the'll never be a fav. but i have a bit more respect for them now.

their anger and desperation seem somewhat contrived to me ... they are a very good band though ... they just do not come off as believable to my ears

i kinda agree. and it's terrible what happened to Chester.

but.......um.....i'm sorry the debut is lyrically one cliche on top of another.

Again i don't mean that to come across badly but just saying what i hear.

Yeah, for such heavy (sounding) music, the lyrics were THE furthest thing from explicit. The only other band I know that has lyrics quite that non-specific is Coldplay. But hey, it definitely works. The number of people who find "I tried so hard, and got so far" to be as deep as Dylan is truly something to behold.

Not saying I don't like the lyrics, but the approach is cliche.

Been thinking about this. It may be cliche, but even as a general sentiment, a lot of people can relate.
