Ancient Ways
I saw the thread and decided to mute the baseball game and give it a listen since it's already on YouTube in its entirety. Much better than I was expecting. I never cared for the cheesy keyboard sound they used to use and, thankfully, it only pops up a couple of time most notably in the opening track overture which is a short instrumental intro. They most sound like old Styx on the last 2 tracks and anytime Tommy and JY sing harmony. I've seen a lot of complaints about Gowan. Not really familiar with his prior work but his vocals don't bother me at all. It's a pretty easy listen compared to something like clockwork angels and the production/mixing is pretty clear. I enjoyed it.
Entre_Perpetuo
man, I really want to get this now... I'll def buy it, if not this week then within the next month.
RUSHHEAD666
I absolutely hated Gowan in STYX when he joined but man over the years the guy is awesome. Like I said, Gowan was at his best in Stockton Ca last year. He surely fits in now for sure. He blows Dennis DeOld the fukk away.
MusicHead
My only complaint about The Mission: it's way too short. I would have loved to see this as a double album. Man's first visit to the Red Planet is much more noteworthy IMO.
MusicHead
"The Mission" is a great sounding record... ...especially you are a fan of "The Grand Illusion" / "Pieces of Eight" era. It is so classic "Styx sounding" while still sounding quite fresh, indeed. It doesn't sound, to these ears, that they are trying to capitalize on past glory, but rather (and finally) picking up where they left off. And with great result. I love when a band, from back in the day, surprises you with an album like this. Don't even get me started about how great the new Cheap Trick album is! I was an IndieGogo backer, so I should be getting the CD anytime. Have to settle for the download! :)

I couldn't wait for my autographed cd so I put it on my Apple Music and blasted it on my way to work!! Holy shit man this is up for my ALBUM OF THE YEAR! One time through and I love ALL of it. It's true! It's way to short, but there is zero filler. It's their best studio album since "Pieces Of Eight." Todd kicks ass on this record. I love the drumming on Overture. "Red Storm" is a masterpiece. Incredible vocals by all. Amazing harmony vocals. Incredible riffs, guitars and keys! This album gets 5 OUT OF 5 RED STARS. I can't wait for Friday night!! I hope they play the whole record live!!!! I'm having a STYX night tonight! Dedicated to PAT!

bluefox4000
I finished it. It's NOTHING revolutionary. it's exactly what you'd a expect a styx album to be. No chances took. now that reads as a criticism but it's not. good album. I enjoyed this more than anything else post Paradise Theater, The Outpost is freakin' brilliant. and Lawrence Gowan wasn't annoying. Cause i think he's awful live. just AWFUL. not here though. he's ok. i give this 7/10 Mick

The K Man
I have been converted as well; it is a lot better than I thought it would be. They definitely channel the classic Styx vibe for most of the record and there are 5-6 legitimately really good Styx tunes on here (with most of the rest being good, and only a couple skippers).

RUSHHEAD666
Skipper was also a generic soda made for Safeway back in the day. It's a Dr. Pepper flavored carbonated beverage. Speaking of back in the day, I used to work at Safeway in Alamo back in the mid 80's. Some rich dude who lived there would always drive his incredible STYX van to the store! It was red and black. The sides of the van both had the "Pieces Of Eight" album cover spray painted it them! It was EPIC!!!! Wish I had a picture! Sorry Duck! STYX RULES!!!! But your STYNX moniker is classic!!!!

Sometimes bands should just stick to what they are good at writing!! AMEN TO STYX!! This album gets 10/10 for me.
RUSHHEAD666
Watching Styx Live In Vegas tonight on Blu! Amazing behind the scenes. Rock N Roll is a hard ass fuckiing business. STYX is one of the hardest rocking and working bands in the world. I will love them forever. They are still playing. Y&T is still playing. Different members but still put out quality music. Perhaps Geddy and Alex should just say FUCKK IT and get a new drummer. We have all been obsessing about what famous drummer Ged and Al should ensnare. But fukk that concept. I am willing to bet all of you Rush prog snob knobs and my corn on the cob besties on here that if Ged and Al really do get together they will try out an UNKNOWN DRUMMER! Makes sense!!! DUH!!! This idea might not be original but who cares. It just came to me. RUSH will continue again. With another unknown drummer. It's a pattern right? If Geddy and Al really do tryouts for a new drummer I'm going. And I suck compared to so many awesome drummers who are on here. But fuckk it. Life is short. Perhaps I'm just full of shite again. But wow. What a concept. The two best friends trying out drummers again for a new band. I'm in. Literally. Are you? RutseyPeartAnd now the next drummer in RUSH could be you! Signed, "Didacts & Narpets" Can you drummers play that?
Hatchetaxe&saw
I've had The Mission on in the car all day, yep, pretty much all killer, v little filler. I always felt that Rush could release good/great albums well into their later years, and they did. But, Styx? f**k no. What a lovely surprise.

Presto-digitation
I wasn't much of a fan of Gone Gone Gone by its lonesome and still don't believe it to be a top tier song, but it is better now in context and following Overture. About the only song I'm really apathetic about is Trouble With The Big Show and not because JY sings it (I actually do not hate his voice as some do), but because it's this weird, short, pretty schizophrenic transition piece. Kinda wish he'd had a single showcase song like These Are The Times, the amazing song from Cyclorama. But it's all a bit of picking nits really. Fantastic album. My highlights are Locomotive, Khedive, The Outpost, Red Storm, Radio Silence, and The Greater Good...with no disrespect to the unmentioned tunes as well. Really strong album. ReRushed
Full disclosure - I am not that big of a Styx fan. They either make me cringe or they impress me. The cringe worthy wins out. With that said, I am halfway through The Mission... holy... shit. It's a wonderful time warp back to my junior high school days when Styx was all the rage. This is the Styx that definitely impresses.
