Like Star Trek? Think Galaxy Quest is Funny? Coming this Fall

This is the new show of the fall that I am MOST excited about! It looks absolutely wonderful. I have never laughed this much while watching one of those network trailers. I am worried though about how it will do in the ratings. Sci-Fi has a terrible track record at FOX and it is in a time-slot where it is likely to finish 4th. Shondaland fare is very popular with the normals and there will be those insipid Thursday Night Football* games as well. And remember that:

Against the run of the mill

Swimming against the stream

Life in two dimensions

Is a mass production scheme

* - For the record, I am an BIG NFL fan. I am not a fan of having games played on Thursday or any other day that is not Sunday for that matter.

Then you know the Thursday night NFL product sucks. Don't sweat it.

Everyone does, but somehow it still gets ratings.

I think the best the Orville can hope for in the fall is coming in 3rd ahead of NBC's Will & Grace reboot / Great News while CBS has the football and 3rd ahead of Mom / Life in Pieces when NBC has football. I think beating Will & Grace and Great News is doable, but I really doubt it will make it above 4th when NBC has football. So it will be up to FOX, DVR/Streaming lift, and how much they don't mind having a fairly low rated show on Thursdays over an inane talent/cooking reality show that draws linear ratings. That means the reviews and critics will be important. If it receives critical praise, it will likely stay. If it receives a Golden Globe nomination (unlikely), it will stay for sure. If it is panned, watch out! I'm just being realistic. I think it is going to be an awesome show and I will watch every episode that airs, but neither I alone, nor all of the people on this board together have the power to influence whether or not the show makes it past the initial episode order.

10 of the 13 episode titles are up, although a premier date hasn't been set yet: http://www.epguides.com/Orville/

Old Wounds

If the Stars Should Appear

Command Performance

About a Girl

Pria

Krill

Into the Fold

Cupid's Dagger

Nightmares

Primal Urges

Cool, not a bunch of stupid-sounding titles. Maybe this will be drama with a BIT of comedy.

I'll take it.

This overstuffed and perhaps overambitious hour was created by and stars Family Guy mastermind Seth MacFarlane and yet plays it entirely straight. Indeed, the series, an overt homage to the original Star Trek, has far fewer out-and-out jokes than one might expect, instead relying on a general tone of zany adventurousness to earn your attention. Though far from perfect in its early going, the show’s fun, sunny energy could win over fans of classic sci-fi and those who vibe with MacFarlane’s geekier, less nihilistic impulses.

This sounds like EXACTLY what the Doctor ordered! Can't wait to see it.

Well I can't say I loved it. I didn't think much of the Train Job either when FOX broadcast it but I would come to love Firefly. So I'm still cautiously optimistic and will watch more.

I loved it. The dialogue was a bit stiff, which is to be expected in episode 1, but the characters were likeable, and it's got a lot of room to grow. The humor was fairly well balanced to make it feel like TNG with an irreverent crew.

I'm excited for more of this. I feel like it will develop nicely. And the whole aesthetic of the show is just wonderful. Eight thumbs up.

I noticed they didn't borrow transporter technology.

It was pretty funny and better than I expected. I'll be watching this one. But why did the helmsman have to loop around the bad guy ship so much? Why didn't he just sit behind the engine and fire away at point-blank range? I guess so they could make the Arbor Day joke?

I'm shocked at how badly the critics are missing the mark on this show.

Rotten Tomatos reports a critic score of 19%, but an audience score of 90%. Metacritic's critic score is 35%, with an audience score of 81%... IMDB's viewer rating is 7.8/10 stars.

It's pretty clear that viewers enjoyed the show... Responses I've read around Facebook, Reddit, etc... are overwhelmingly positive. Why are these supposed expert critics so out of touch?

They usually are.

I enjoyed the show and I hope the ratings reflect what you're saying because that's all that networks care about.

At 8.6 million viewers, it is the highest rated hour-long network permier since 2014's Gotham. (excluding superbowl lead-outs).

I asked my wife the question about the loop maneuver. She said I should stop thinking so tactically all the time and just "enjoy the darn show"! :D So I will from now on.

I saw it the other night and thought it was a bit annoying how they felt like they had to insert a joke every two minutes. It felt very contrived. I wanted to like the show but based on the premiere episode, I don't know that I care to watch any more.

I get it! It's a "dramady"! I see what you did there, Seth. Last night's ep was pretty good, I look forward to the day we can tell a computer we want a cannibas brownie or what-have-you and have it appear before our eyes.:D I also wonder if the captain and XO are gonna do the Sam & Dianne thing or will they be back together within the season.
