Chris Cornell has died aged 52

The one thing I've noticed is almost every tribute is someone performing Black Hole Sun. I had no idea that was his defining song. Its a great sun, but he has so many great ones.

I personally love "Blow Up The Outside World" even better and that has kind of the same vibe.

I'm not on board with the "Black Hole Sun" worship. It's a good song, but like you pointed out there are a lot of great Soundgarden songs. Many of them preferable to "Black Hole Sun". But, I'm not complaining about the tributes. It's obviously a song a lot of people enjoy.

I used to think it was amazing.

Then I realised...the album it comes from is filled with songs it's equal and superior!

It's a good one. For me I really like fell on black days as it has his softer and louder vocals throughout and the subject matter was suitable to the whole vibe of the band.

I've really liked a few of the Say Hello To Heaven tributes I've seen.

I know how much they are loathed on this board, but U2 dedicated Running to Stand Still to Chris & his family last night at their show at the Rose Bowl.

And Black Hole Sun was the last song that was played on the P.A. before they came out on stage.

The board doesn't loathe U2

No, just their last two albums in my case and Pop as well. Old school u2 is awesome.

Blow is my favorite video of theirs. Great homage to Parallax View which was filmed in Seattle. Great Hitchcockian scene at the Space Needle in that movie as well.

I Love Soundgarden and Chris Cornell was an amazing artist.

I'm upset and shocked with his death.

His lyrics, interpretation and musical talent spoke from heart to heart, mind to mind.

And he was sympathetic.

I'll surely miss him.

LOL!

However, it is natural for the most widely known song to be covered. If Thom Yorke died tomorrow, Creep would be by far their most covered song in tributes (even though Radiohead has a ton of songs better). It's just the way it goes.

I'll miss Layne more than Chris, just where my grunge roots are most deeply connected. Great that they did this. I played the shit out of Mad Season when it was released and for year thereafter. Probably as many times as I've listened to Badmotorfinger or Down On the Upside.

Fwiw, I think Chris was a 'better' singer (and musician), at least in the historical context he'll go down as one of the best ever.

Here's a tribute I found on one of my subscribed youtube pages (Rick's a very cool, talented musician):

These guys are real deal Soundgarden fans. The cover was done beautifully.

Let's not forget with these tributes bands are probably playing a song they already know how to play or is easy for them to learn. Not to mention easiest for them to sing.

I don't care how talented a band might be. No one can bust out a song like Slaves And Bulldozers or Jesus Christ Pose on short notice without a number of rehearsals.

I hear you. Try Rusted Cage! That's a mother f***er!

Last Tuesday on my radio show I played:

Hunger Strike

Times of Trouble

My Wave

Moonchild

and Sweet Euphoria.

Could have selected any half-dozen songs that would have paid fitting tribute, but those are the songs that made the cut.

At least black hole sun is a good song. Creep might be their worst song.

I'm working really hard on my Like a Stone exhibit. It's gonna be showing at a local art & design festival next month.

Do you think Cornell chose to break his rusty cage because it was too hard to break his new one?

He'd never break the new one. The rusty one he'd at least have had a chance. Even a rock will crumble, if you strike at it night and day.

FOBD 3 from Superunknown deluxe is quite different.

Toxicology results are in, although it refers to TMZ which is a shit source. However, his wife doesn't appear to deny it in her statement. It appears he slipped off the wagon and the Ativan may have pushed him over the edge. The other meds offer explanation for his sloppy performance (as described by his sound engineer).

I almost went to this show since I'm 2 hours from Detroit. But Soundgarden has a reputation for occasional sloppy live performances and I don't like to drive to mid-week concerts with work the next day. Two weeks later, I actually prefer not seeing Chris if his last performance was sloppy and drug hazed...I prefer to keep good memories.

The report is pretty insignificant at this point...i.e., too late to fix anything. Call it a toxic drug cocktail and a terrible tragedy.

But if that information can help others free themselves from drug abuse and dependency, then it will be hugely significant.

Every time someone dies from the abuse of drugs - legal or illegal - we can use it to help others learn from those fatal mistakes.
