Into the woods

6/10.

The first half is wonderful. if anyone is unfamiler with the stage show......Act 1 on stage is very disney spoof like. so that was right in their range.

Secxond half....."act 2" they whitewash a lot of the stage shows darkness and it just does not work.

half a good film

Mick

I hated the songs. Oh my days I cannot stand the soundtrack at all. The concept was ok but I couldn't get through this and I love the cast!

than you'll hate sondheim in general........wait did you like sweeney Todd? the songs i mean.

Mick

That's to date the only one I enjoy. I enjoy the non-movie version (but as we've discussed I felt the amateur singing suited the style of the movie).

Everything else I have heard has made me want to stab my ears! I have heard Sondheim is a genius in his field so maybe this is another Zappa type black hole in my music tastes lol.

he is a genius. he really is the Zappa of musical theater in a way. so not everybody is gonna flock to his stuff. it's very offbeat non traditional musical theater writing.

he shows never ran long but have all been highly praised by critics and theater snobs such as i, lol

Alien Covenant

Best one since the 2nd one.

Good to hear.

Currently on RottenTomatoes, it's at 73% based on 239 reviews.

The biggest complaints I've heard about it was about the CGI and how obviously stupid the people act in the movie.

I think I'd feel very different if I saw his work in a theatre. I liked that video you played me the other day, I would just need context to click with it.

Into The Woods is only the second full musical I have tried and I found it obnoxiously catchy. But it could have just been the day!

Singles (8/10)

I loved this. I really love Cameron Crowe movies and I really think this was great. I loved the honesty of the characters, how genuine and real they felt. The script was edgy without sounding forced, and the soundtrack was incredible.

I sense a Cameron Crowe binge on the horizon!

Hey, you finally saw it! I must've seen it at least 30 times.

IMHO, there are very very few that can match Crowe's run from Say Anything to Vanilla Sky....that's Say Anything, Singles, Jerry Maguire, Almost Famous, and Vanilla Sky.

Do this: the part where Citizen Dick is in the cafe reading their concert review...pause when you see the newspaper review, squint, and read it. A concert review is actually written out, and it's funny.

The deluxe edition has the review printed as a part of the CD gatefold. It's the edition I just bought. Disc two even has the song "Touch Me I'm Dick" by the fictional band Citizen Dick and really interesting liner notes by Cameron Crowe. It's a beautiful package!

I plan to buy the movie this week. I also bought myself a copy of Almost Famous. I plan to get the rest of his movies soon as I LOVE Vanilla Sky, and already have watched Jerry Maguire to death.

The man has the most amazing soundtracks.

Nice!!!

And Crowe's ex-wife was one of the best looking rock musicians of all-time!

How about Say Anything? I think you'd like that too if you haven't seen it already.

I looked up all his movies. I plan to see them all, skipping the more recent crap he made (Elizabethtown is one of the worst movies I have ever seen).

Elizabethtown seemed like a movie that was trying to copy Crowe's style but failed miserably. Absolute trash.

Grade: F

The only other Crowe movie that I've seen that came out AFTER Elizabethtown is We Bought A Zoo. It wasn't as annoying as Elizabethtown but it was still useless.

Grade: F

Hard to imagine that those two movies were made by the same guy who had that beautiful 1989 to 2001 run of Say Anything to Vanilla Sky.

I have to say, watching Singles there were moments when his style, you know when the characters talk to us and pour out their sometimes really weird feelings, that I thought I was going to hate it. But somehow he makes it work, and the cast was brilliant. And something else I really love is his way of not making the characters glamorous or Hollywood sexy, or the drama plastic. It all feels surreal and yet really down to earth.

Almost like a cartoon made of photographs.

Also considering as a teen I was obsessed with alt rock and the nineties, I still get a twang of nostalgia when I watch movies like this.

Bridget Fonda was insanely cute. I actually wish women dressed more like this today.

Well put in regards to the "cartoon made of photographs."

Singles came out when I was a 20 year old college kid and right AS those bands (Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden) were really breaking through. There's even an early version of Spoonman on the soundtrack that Cornell wrote specifically for the movie.

It has such a great soundtrack! REM as well!

Maybe it's because when I was 13/14 I was living in the past, but this era of music still sounds timeless to my ears. It's just so...appealing and powerful and to the point emotionally. And the movie was just the same. I think if he made it today, it could still work (although the way people communicate and meet each other has changed for the worse today).

I think tonight I am going to watch Almost Famous.

X-Men: Days of Future Past. I've seen parts of this movie several times but never the whole thing. Not a bad movie but the best parts were with Quicksilver.

It was a free matinee at the Lost in the 50's car show in Sandpoint, idaho. Got to see it in an old, early 1900's theater with the Lad, which was fun.

The House Bunny, for like the 10th time. For some reason I find it very entertaining! Go figure- Kurt Russell is not in it anywhere :P

A film that was under my bucket list of films I needed to see for the longest time but never gone about it until now. As sexually uncomfortable as it was, ultimately I thought it was an amazing film by a director I greatly respect (even though I've only seen Eraserhead). Dennis Hopper's character creeped the f**k out of me and my sister in the ways we want to be creeped out. Semi-unrelated, but fact that the new Twin Peaks premiered over the weekend the same time I watched this influenced us to watch the original series (again, something that was on my bucket list but never done 'til now) and now it's been my our TV obsession in many years. Unfortunately, my library doesn't have any other David Lynch films so it's gonna be awhile before I watch another one.

This movie creeped me out when I first saw it years ago. You are right, Dennis Hopper's character is the stuff of nightmares. I hope you enjoy the original Twin Peaks. Second season isn't nearly as good as the first since David Lynch wasn't around at the time but the last episode makes up for it. I'm really enjoying the revival of the series. Lots to take in There's been so much discussion over on Facebook about what everything means, it's been great.
