  2. 2. How many of these 21st century Rush tunes do you like/love? (("It's ok/passable" does NOT count.))

    • ALL 38 BABY!!!
    • 34-37. It's a near perfect trifecta!
    • 28-34. There's plenty of lovin' in there to be had.
    • 22-27. A lot of good stuff to be found.
    • 17-22. Around half.
    • 12-16. A lot of stuff I don't care about or dislike but I can still find some goodies.
    • 7-11. I wish there were more but there just aren't.
    • 1-6. Very disappointing Rush era for me.
    • NONE!!!! Absolute crap!!!

  3. 3. As a whole, how do 21st century Rush songs stack up against the 20th century stuff? ((Check all that apply.))

    • 21st century Rush > 1970s Rush
    • 21st century Rush > 1980s Rush
    • 21st century Rush > 1990s Rush
    • It's not as good as any of the 20th century stuff.
    • ((Again, I can't vote because I haven't heard it all.))

It was toss-up between Clockwork Angels and Armor and Sword, but I went with A & S.

I like around 10 songs.

And 21th century stuff cannot come close to either the 70's or 80's(PeW - PoW), and the 90's are slightly better(because Vapor Trails totally sucks).

Only better than 70s RUSH, mostly because both Clockwork Angels and Vapor Trails were disappointing for different reasons. Still, 6 or 7 great songs to be had on each of those albums. Mixed in with the stellar songwriting on Snakes & Arrows, make it an "A lot of good stuff to be found" decade of music. There are a lot of songs that I could choose as a favourite from this era on Snakes & Arrows, the one I went with could be interchanged with We Hold On, Bravest Face, Workin' Them Angels, or Far Cry. So many great choices for favourite from that album! Easily one of the best albums ever recorded. Edited by diatribein

I pretty much disagree with all of that but I like the thought behind what you wrote

Though it's really only better than 90s Rush. The 80s had MP, Signals, and Pow. The 70s had...oh so much. VT and SnA just can't compete.

Headlong Flight. Very disappointing era. Not as good as the 20th century stuff. Looking at it this way where all the songs are laid out like this it makes me realize how little I really love about this era. A lot of it is likable but just not very lovable.

That's what I was thinking as I was typing it all out.

I think I'm counting around half for the poll

Too many great songs here for me to choose a favourite. I love all three of these albums, with only perhaps 5 of the songs on this list sinking to the level of okay/passable in my estimation.

Workin' Them Angeles gets the vote in response to the 1'st question. That was easy.

"I wish their were more but their just arn't" was my answer to the 2nd question. There are a fair number of songs from CA that are in the "Its ok / passable" category but since they don't count, well it is what it is.

For the 3'rd question I had to vote that it was the worst era for Rush. Its not close to the 70's or 80's. The only hard question was if it was better than the 90's. S&A is great but is flanked by 1 album I strongly dislike (VT) and one that is full of songs that are I either don't like (CA up to Halo Effect) or mostly "ok / passable" (CA from Halo Effect on).

The 90's have one album (Counterparts) which is on par with S&A. It's very close. Flanking it is one album (T4E) that has Rush's 2 worst (IMO) songs but then a lot of work that is either good or "ok / passable". On its other side is album (RTB) with a lot of "ok / passable" songs plus a couple of very good songs.

So at its best the 90's are just about on par with the best 21'st century Rush work. At its worst, the 90's are slightly worse but they have a lot of material that is slightly better then the normal 21'st century work. Its this last group of work which pulls the 90's ahead.

Clockwork is better than any album of the 90's, but I still think that the 90's were better overall.

Clockwork to me is the bang that every band would like to go out on.

But although Vapor is the weakest album, Earthshine is an amazing tune.

Nothing off Snake comes close to being a top song for me, but as a whole it's a terrific album, and perhaps on another day would help the 21st rise above the 90's.

70's and 80's win easy, but that's also because they recorded so much more often then.

Yeah, I'm the exact opposite. VT and CA were great, and S&A had 4 great songs, a couple of ok ones, and a bunch of junk. On average, I like 21st century more than the 1980's, which outside of the stellar MP, had a lot of really weak material to bring down the average song quality.

Headlong Flight is definitely the best Rush song of the century, but I like almost all of them. There are a couple S Ames & Arrows songs I'm not a fan of, but Vapor Trails and Clockwork Angels are practically flawless in my opinion.

I think that 21st century Rush is better than 1990s Rush, mainly because of the weakness of Test for Echo.

I also happen to enjoy new Rush as a whole more than '70s Rush. (Wait, let me explain!). The '70s had songs that were better (I can't begin to compare the likes of Xanadu and 2112 to something like Far.Cry or Caravan), but there are just so many absolute clunkers from that era (The Fountain of Lamneth, Hemispheres, Need Some Love, Making Memories, etc.), that make 21st century Rush more consistently enjoyable as a whole. There aren't as many flat-out bad songs. There are a few (The Larger Bowl, Bravest Face, The Stars Look Down), but not many.

This is a great picture.

Anyone know the year it was taken?

I would guess around the time of the Vapor Trails release. The picture on the wall is the tarot card The Fool and those cards were used as a visual theme on the album. So I would say it's from 2002.

That's what I thought too. It's the last time Neil looked well.

Impossible for me to choose a favorite song, and I think that the era produced three pretty solid albums. All would benefit from trimming, not just for cutting weaker tracks, but also for eliminating the fatigue of too much of a good thing. In the end, the three albums are so disparate that it really comes down to what I'm in the mood for. I'll say that Snakes and Arrows is the least work as a listener. Edited by goose
