So do you just need an internet connection to get Sling? I'm trying to figure out the cheapest way to get more tv channels. I'm pretty far from the city so can only pick up a couple of channels by antenna.

You also need some kind of device to hook to the TV or a "Smart TV". Roku, Chromecast, Amazon Fire stick and many others will connect with Sling.

Thanks. I have a smart TV but I'm not sure if Sling is on there. That's how I got Netflix before before Does anyone know if DirecTV just offers Internet service?

I'm pretty sure DirectTV just bundes using other net providers, like HughesNet or ATT. How do you access the web now?

Only on my cell phone. I don't have internet in the house.

Aha. Well, depending on your plan and connection, you could use your phone to stream via a smart tv.

But won't work because I don't have unlimited data on my plan.

Sounds like you've got some number to crunch. Decide what you are willing to pay for what you want to watch, and for convenience. Where we are, Charter Cable's internet service (+/-$70) is the best bang for the buck. It keeps creeping up, though....$5 every six months or so.

Anything more than what I have now which is like two channels maybe. I have an antenna hooked up to my TV but it's just not drawing enough because I'm not close enough to town.

There are good informational sites on what antennas may or may not work in your particular circumstance. http://otadtv.com/tvtower/index.html may be a good place to start.

That's what I've been doing for the past 6 months but I'd like to have regular tv again. There's really not a choice to have regular cable so that's why I was asking about the wireless options.

If you have a decent internet connection/speed I think an Amazon Fire box would be pretty good. If you have Amazon Prime you can stream a lot of good movies and tv shows. Hulu is working on a streaming service and if it's good it might be the best option. Also, you can download several apps that provide free streaming. If you're inclined to less than honest streaming you can download Kodi and get access to tons of streaming options.

Okay. That's kind of what I was wondering. If I only have Internet what are my options? I really haven't lived here very long so I haven't pursued any information yet.

That's exactly way we got rid of it. Plus, there is only one company. We did try DirectTV a few years ago. Very frustrating with the signal strength so it didn't last long.

With internet, you can get hulu, amazon, netflix... That's what we do. Also, we hook up the laptop via HDMI cable to our smartTV and watch streaming sports (NBA, NFL, NHL...)

So I've been using it since the weekend and it's now Wednesday. I currently have 20mbps Internet and have only had a couple of drop offs of reception. Still, it's only $15 more per month to go to 100mbps internet. My OTA antenna arrived today and was well reviewed on cnet at under $10 so I'll be plugging that in tomorrow. We are 90% decided to remove the satellite tv which will net us about $85 per month.

Our smart TV has Hulu, Amazon, Netflix and other programs. You do have too pay a few bucks to use them each time. Never tried any of them though. We bought a to pack of antennas at Sams club but only get about eighteen stations. Mostly local stuff but a few stations from outside of Alaska. What is an OTA antenna? And what does it provide you with?

Sorry, over the air. Just a modern version of rabbit ears/round uhf antenna capable of receiving the modern local digital signals in your local area. They seem to work better in a larger city without a lot of obstructions like mountains. I only get the local fox affiliate through sling so I need the OTA for the other local channels.

Update. Had some issues with buffering so upgraded from 20mbps Internet to 100 and rarely have any issues. So +10 for faster internet -$100 for cheaper tv service = $90/month in my pocket for the same thing I already had.

10 mbps covers 1 streaming movie at 1080p but in reality your service being advertised as 20 mbps is most likely running well below that at peak periods. What is advertised at xxmbps really means is: this how large of a pipe we give you if there is no other traffic off of this trunk, everything is perfect, and you and your neighbors are not using our service. But in reality the pipes are always clogged and the stream comes out in bursts of varying times and volume. Same thing at 100 mbps but at least the pipe is bigger thus much better at camouflaging the uneven flow. Enjoy the faster internet.

Any comments on the antenna?

Regarding the Internet, at any one time there might be 6-7 devices running on it but you are correct that advertised speeds are never the norm.

The antenna is hit and miss now, I'm still experimenting. It doesn't really pick up the channel I get on sling but the other major networks look better on the antenna than they ever did on satellite.

This is what I installed on my house when I cut the cord to my cable dependency thanks to the whole Frontier take over of Verizon. I found the little HD antenna's that hook to the back of the TV just didn't get the reception. I get 50+ HD channels and only have problems if there is a lot of lightning and then only channel 3 WEDU will get excessively blinky. Funny thing WEDU is the closest broadcast sourse to my house so maybe that has something to do with it  Anyway I do miss the the sports channels but I do not miss the $200+ a month bill. I also have 100 MBS internet that I use for my streaming services. Best thing I ever did!!!

I was watching the NBA finals via antenna, remotely at a hamburger stand by a softball field, and the picture was awesome.

Just curious since this is TV related. If the only Internet access I have is through my phone and it is unlimited, is there anyway to be able to hook it up to my smart TV so I can use the Internet to watch stuff on television?

I have an iPhone. I have the Airplay on my phone but it won't work with my TV. I tried getting an HDMI cable that converts to a lightning but that didn't really do what I needed it to do.
