Love: Caravan, BU2B, and The Garden

Like: The Wreckers, Wish Them Well, and The Anarchist

Hate: Headlong Flight, Clockwork Angels, and Seven Cities of Gold

I really, really, really, really do not understand the love that Headlong Flight and the title track get on this board. I remember putting this album on for the first time. I, obviously, already knew the first two songs from the single. Immediately, I was annoyed that they had been changed so that they were kind of crossfaded (I detest crossfading). I thought to myself, that's okay, I still have the single versions, so it doesn't matter. Then the next track came on and it was so long and pedantic. I kept thinking to myself when will this thing end and OH NO, THIS is the title track! After what seemed like an hour The Anarchist lifted my spirits momentarily, but I was again disappointed by the fact that it too was crossfaded into Carnies. I felt like both Carnies and Halo Effect were okay if not particularly memorable, but by this time it was already clear to me that the album was a HUGE disappointment compared to Snakes & Arrows.

Then there was Seven Cities Of Gold; that was a difficult listen. I instantly had a new least favourite on an album that was already very sub-par in my book. I liked The Wreckers instantly, so that was a nice respite, but it didn't last long. I had watched the video only once on the RUSH website for Headlong Flight and was legitimately surprised that it was the lead single. I thought it had to be a mistake. There is nothing about this song I like. It is poorly written and poorly constructed and it sounds like a boring jam rather than an actual song. UGH! BU2B2 isn't really a song, so... At least the album ends well. I like Wish Them Well. The only problem with it is that it comes so late in the album that you've lost faith by the time you reach it. At least the lyrics on that song are relatable! The last song was brilliant too. I kept singing "The hours tick away... The cells tick away...". Yes they do. I think I'll tick mine away listening to a better RUSH album, like Snakes & Arrows.

I'll post my 8-song re-working of the album, which I think really makes the whole thing work much better, both in song flow and album length.

1. Clockwork Angels ( a logical opener, creating the Clockwork universe)

2. BU2B (enter the main character)

3. The Anarchist

4. Seven Cities of Gold

5. Carnies

6. BU2B2 (I personally like the idea of a reprise/segue)

7. The Garden

8. Caravan (a killer track as a closer)

The remaining tracks are either too much of a good things or sub-par filler

My 8 tracks would be:

1. Caravan

2. BU2B

3. The Anarchist

4. Carnies

5. Halo Effect

6. The Wreckers

7. Wish Them Well

8. The Garden

Running Time: 43:13

That is around the traditional running time of a 70s / 80s album! You could release it on a single vinyl LP, but the title would need to be changed once Clockwork Angels was excised. How about we call it Thinking Big?

Headlong, 7 Cities, Bu2B are the best.

Only BU2B2 is filler. It's a solid album baby! :ebert:

My top 3 are Headlong Flight, Clockwork Angels, and Caravan. But really, I love the whole album.

BU2B2 is nice, but it's a filler track that really should have been tackes on to the beginning of Wish Then Well.

BU2B probably the most cutting edge rush track ever for me is a real work of art

Halo effect a purile pile of drivel

The whole album's 50/50 half utter rush brilliance, the other half unusual rush sub standard

As an album in entirety, doesnt match up to any single one of the others

To me a 'filler' track is a track that the artist knows is pointless and is merely there because ya gotta fill up the album.

I don't think even BU2B2 fits that and I wish there'd been a choice to vote 'no filler'.

BU2B2 does fit the story and to me it isn't filler. However, it isn't terribly interesting to me so I voted it as weakest track.

I'm not trying to be pedantic, because I do believe many people do think the song is filler.

I don't see it as a song, I see it as story-telling device to advance the plot, similar to when Alex is messing around trying to figure out how a guitar works in 2112. On it's own it would be so misplaced, but in context it has a point.

BU2B2 is not a track I would ever listen to outside of album context, and I don't think it's supposed to be.

Can only remember The Garden which is decent apart from crowbarring lyrics that don't really fit....

Shoehorning not crowbarring.

Maybe in Scotland it's crowbarring. Either way, the point gets across.

I agree. It makes sense as a storytelling device.

Halo Effect and Wish Them Well couldve easily been left off the album without effecting anything. BU2B2 as well but some make a good point about it being vital to keep the story going for those paying attention to it

It's more accurate in this case...shoehorning implies that it sort of fits with a bit of help....Geddy had to totally beat the prose to a pulp to get it in in this instance.
