The performance is inspired, but for me, the album suffers not from the production, but the fact that there is a lack of tangible riffs and songwriting chops - after two songs, you've heard just about all they had to offer ..

It is easy to blame the sound/mix, but the songs just aren't fleshed out or developed ..

6/10

I'm actually really pleased you gave this a fair listen! You are quite harsh about later Rush so...this pleased me

9/10 for me

Only thing for me is...i don't love Freeze or Out Of The Cradle. But alongside Hold Your Fire, Grace Under Pressure, A Farewell To Kings and Moving Pictures, this is at the very top of the pile for me.

I probably come across too critical of later Rush, and that is probably more a reflection on how much I love the earlier stuff ..

Over time, I have been able to take each album on its own merits and not obsess on comparing one album to another

If I mash up everything I like from the original and the remix, and try not to dwell on the production, I come up with a 7/10. Earthshine, Secret Touch, Vapor Trail, and Ghost Rider are the pillars of the album for me.

Agree with all of that including your rating and 4 pillars.

I'd add that it's a meaningful album due to personal reasons.

I could copy and paste this to the A Farewell to Kings thread.

I love it and think it's the most mature and heart-felt effort of their career.

What this guy said.

Between the original and remix, and cutting 2-3 songs as this bad boy is a little long for my ears, gotta give it a 10 for the amount of pleasure it's given me. NPs most raw and succinct performance. Top 5 Rush album for me!

I agree with your main point, although I am still pretty high on Freeze, Vapor Trail, Earthshine and Nocturne. There are glimpses of greatness in most of the other songs, but the arrangements are a bit clunky and some songs have great parts ruined by mediocre parts, like One Little Victory having that great into before going into those ugly verses.
