IF South Carolina can miraculously win the tournament, then the defending champions in the 3 major men's sports would be from the state of South Carolina:

Coastal Carolina: baseball

Clemson: football

South Carolina: basketball

Big dreams

The Lady Gamecocks won the women's National Championship. The men made it to the final 4 in the same year. Not bad for the little ole state of SC in recent sports history.

That should definitely include the University of SC baseball championships in back to back years in recent history..

Anyway, after that game, I wasn't mad or anything. Or even all that disappointed. Just accepted it for what it was, was glad the Gamecocks made a game out of it after it looked like they might be blown out in the second half, taking it down to the wire. No shame in that loss to a very good team.

Not only do I naturally pull for the underdog, but if Gonzaga wins, SC was only stopped in the tournament by the eventual National Champion, which it came close to beating ;)

Now, I hope the Zags can go on to beat UNC

Fundamentals possibly lost the game for the Ducks. I never even played basketball and I am only 5' and know the importance even of boxing out.

On one of the replays immediately after the game, it was very clear that Meeks plowed into the back of a couple of Oregon players to get the rebound. Had it not been the final seconds, I think he would have been given a foul. That only accounts for one of the possible rebounds Oregon had a shot at and didn't get. They were definitely overmatched by the "length" (as the hoops guys say) of the Tarheels.

Argument about basketball rules:

Note -- I am NOT complaining about the outcome in the last few seconds of the South Carolina - Gonzaga game, when South Carolina had the ball and a chance to tie it to send it to overtime with a 3 point shot. Rather than wait for that to happen, Gonzaga fouled the SC player, sending him to the line on a one and one. That was a completely legitimate move by Gonzaga, completely within the rules and the smart move to make at that time. So, their win was fair and square under the rules.

That understood, that ending reminded me of a feature of basketball that I have always disliked. Unlike almost any other sport, in basketball a team can intentionally commit a penalty in certain situations in order to give themselves an advantage. That makes the supposed "penalty" for a violation of the rules into something that is not a real "penalty" at all, but instead a reward.

Meh.

I was pulling hard for Rooster's Gamecocks- but goose's Zags make the final! Wow, great effort by both teams. Hope second game is as good.

Amazing things have happened since they took down that confounded rebel flag.

Damn! I was so pulling for the Zags. I have followed them for ages since I've long been a fan of John Stockton, holder of the NBA record for most assists, member of the first Dream Team and yes, a Gonzaga Bulldog.

Did I mention that my son went to library school at UNC? We went to his graduation and my husband and I were the clueless people in Chapel Hill, NC without Carolina Blue on. Babies, grandmas, dogs, you name it, everyone wearing that blue but us. I never got so many looks of pity in my whole life- the dumbass out of stater! Didn't make me want to give them a lot of warm feels. Pretty campus though.

And here we go with bullshit officiating to start the second half.

...that's why we hate the ACC. It's a corrupt organization run for the benefit of UNC-CHAPEL HILL. The Tar Heels always have the refs in their pockets.
