Lurkst
Got the CD/DVD version for Christmas. As someone who didn't own 2112 before, this was a nice value. I liked the video (though I had seen it on youtube prior, but there is higher fidelity audio & video on the DVD), Didn't listen to the covers, don't intend to. The Something For Nothing outtake sounded good. Listening to the 2112 live outtake for the first time now. Seems to have some kind of weird audio clipping going on in the right audio channel during certain parts of the song (perhaps that's why it's an outtake). The Twilight Zone "1977 Live Contraband" sounded like a bootleg (the audio quality reminds me of the "Bad Boys In Cleveland" bootleg from the Fly By Night tour). "The Solar Federation" is and interesting way to kick off disc 2. And the ad is... something. I suppose that's there for historical value more than anything else. That's the most I have to say at the moment. Agree with that, I got it at Xmas too, and having only owned 2112 on scratchy old vinyl it's a worthwhile addition to the collection. Nice to have a formal DVD of the Passaic show and the Q&A with Alex and Terry was interesting. Enjoyable covers too, especially Jacob Moon's Something For Nothing - a very clever rearrangement. My only gripe is the absence of the original album art / lyrics. Oh and the booklet falls out too easily...
YYZumbi
I sold my box set (also Counterparts, Test For Echo and A Farewell To Kings, all on the 2015 reissue vinyl record) today because I did not like it. I will use the money to buy other records instead (with other bands/artists!).
Rod in Toronto
I´m 42 years old, going 43, and hope to live long enough to find a reissue of an album which improves the original. Remakes/re-record/remix/bonus disc and all, nothing tops an original release.

taurus
In my case, I love these re-issues. While my first copy of 2112 is not an original pressing, I purchased it brand new sometime in 1978. It is on Anthem but it was a "noisy" pressing. Lots of crackling right out of the package. But I was a kid living in the country and my trips to the city were months apart. I didn't have the wherewithal to arrange transportation to the city and keep my receipt and return the defective product. My parents would have been no help because they hated me buying records anyway and I almost had to sneek them into the house like a girlie magazine - so I was stuck with this copy. I realize this is a particular circumstance but I'm not in the camp of the original is always better. Sometimes these re-issues are superior - sometimes. Mystic Slipperman
I didn't buy it either. Actually I haven't bought any of the reissues. I think the last "reissue" thing I bought was the X3 DVD and that went away with the divorce! :D I need to re-buy it. Haven't bought any of the Spector boxes ... the only vinyl reissue I've gotten thus far is Bones cause I sold my German LP a long time ago. BTW... how ARE those Sector boxes? Are they really good? I only have original CD pressings (aside from the Audio Fidelity Hemispheres, Bones, Counterparts and the MoFi Moving Pics)... are they worth it? And the R40 collectors box?? The re-issues I was talking about are the current re-issues. My original copy of 2112, while not a 1st pressing, was only a couple of years issued after the initial release, and I'm saying the current re-issue is superior to my '78 copy. Yes, but both are reissues. So you cant really compare them, as original vs reissue, since both are reissues. And we was talking about original vs reissue. Depends on the individual pressing and the individual release. All masterings are/were not created equal. The R40 collectors box is pretty much everything ever released live/archival from A Show Of Hands to 2014.

And we was talking about original vs reissue. Well since you're clearly a nit-piking pedantic, both are not re-issues. The former (my 1978 Anthem) would be a repressing (likely 2nd maybe third) not a re-issue.

LeaveMyThingAlone
Yeah when I saw this was going to sell for $125, I looked at what was included and kind of scratched my head. Hard to see value in that kind of price for basically cover songs. I think the OP made some excellent points and his one point that no one really addressed was regarding Rush continuing to release these cash grabs. Isn'i this a 180 from what the band used to be about? I think his disappointment in Rush and the big picture of the capitalists they have become is what's disappointing him. Personally, Rush never came off as a band that represented themselves as anti-capitalism or whatever. I'm not totally sure what value he's referring to that they had then and what has changed. They are hard working capitalists, as evidenced by the price for this set, and the prices for their last few tours. They have realized their fan base is loyal, will buy anything Rush, and overall very affluent. Difference is that their concerts were still the highest of quality and they deserved every penny they could get. This 2112 set at 125 is crazy. And it's certainly not just Rush coming up with the retail prices for this stuff. I'm sure others influenced this price as well.We will see how long the fans hang with it... I'm just not sure how it might go when they re-issue Presto with a cover of Anagram for Mongo, live video footage of the bunnies used for the cover, and never before heard takes of Alex saying Superconductor, Superconductor are whats included for 80 bucks

Moving Pictures and 2112 was their two biggest sellers so those are the two that will keep getting reissued with the extra widgets.
